Johnston Waft, We are indebted to Mr. Culbertson, the emolent laborer in the cause of Christ at the Presbyterian Book Rooms, for a splendid copy of this valuable book, which is well printed and trubstantially bound, and which most find a large and ready_sale, espe chilly in this city. One of the Martyrs, whose his tory is here related. was Mr. Albert Osborne John son. He was a graduate of Jefferson College and of the Allegheny Theological Seminary, where he grad uated and was married on the same day, May 9, 1855, to Miss Amanda J. Gill, of title city. She was a teacher here, and a member of Rev. Mr. Pax ton's church. Mr. J., with his- wife, went to India in July, 1855. This portion of the book alone will secure it thousands of readers In this city and vicin ity, smcl we are sure Mr. Johnson's story of saeri floe and of ,love is but one among those of • score of sufferers and laborers In the Miesionary field in In dia. A committee was ap pointed by the New York Legislature, a year ago to examine into end report upon the condition of the Tenant Houses of New York City. All intelligent readers will remember the horrible tale told by the dry detail of figures from .that report as It appeared in the metropolitan journals. The writer of this book bee razed upon the-facts there disclosed and used them to "point a moral" In the present hook. A mass of respectable testimonials has from time to time appeared in reference to the character and ob ject:l of this volume, from which we have present space for the following from Rev. Sam's Osgood of 00 Church of the l&tulah, New York: 'R. M. Di Wntr—Dear Sir, I hare read with interest the story jusefrom your press, entitled 'The Tenant House.' It treats with great power and pa. thee the tragic feet of our modern city life—the fact of rent and muted beams for the poor. It Le written in a Christian spirit, and with obvious marks of an observing mind, a large experience, and vivid imagi nation." A VALUABLE WOHE..—We recently had the pleasure of examining a set of Lord Ringlike. ouglis Mexican Antiquities, 9 vole, imperial folio; four of these immense volumes aro filled with illustrations on India proof, in the highest 'style of art, the remaining volumes being occupied with letter-press descriptions of the illustra tions. The whole forms one of those elaborate works, the production of which would occupy most of a lifetime, and the cost of which would appal modern publishers. A large edition of the work was sold to subscribers, when first pub lished in 1833. At this lime but one copy re mains for sale in the Union, and the publisher, Mr. Bone, of London, has but four sets for sale. The work being out of print, and the cost of publication being so enormous, It is not likely that a second edition will ever appear. Those curious to examine ao valuable a work may be gratified by calling upon ,l. L. Read, 78 Fourth street, who is the fortunate possessor of the only copy for sale in this country.
