I A similar attempt, made by Abrams, of Clarion, i to get James Onslow,* of your city, a sub-door ’ I keeperabip, foiled also. Allegheny is too strong | ly Republican to expect many favors from a ] dcmocratio majority! | ! There was a beautiful fight in the democratic < housecaucus last night. It appears that Phila delphia, "was fearful of not being able to carry such offices os she wanted. Accordingly, they. called a preliminary caucus at the Pennsylvania hotel. To this Mr. Irwin went, bnt T do not \ believe he got anything for his pains. Calhoun, of Armstrong, and Abrams, of Clarion, went in and got a fair sh&ro. Cat tho important coun ties of Montgomery, Schuylkill and Luzerne were not consulted. Tho combination was made and that before the regular caucus met. This fact transpired daring the day and when the caucus met at night a general row ensued. Judge Mill, of Frank lin, led off in a speech denunciatory of such combinations. This hod its weight because he is regarded as a man of talent, and was Presi dent of the caucus. He was followed by Jen kins, of Luzerne, and Hippie, of Schuylkill, on tho same aide. These latter were especially dis pleased, for they hod candidates from their counties who were thus to be given over to Slaughter without a fair vote. Calhoun and Abramß were put under cross examination and acknowledged they were pre sent, but refosed to declare who had originated this side* caucus. They simply said they had been Invited. Veardsley, of Philadelphia, alone defended the outside caucus, and refused to back down. But the combination was too strong for the “outsiders.” The latter carried the. ticket they had fixed upon. There was a good deal of grumbling and hard swearing among the disappointed applicants and their legislative backers. It was useless. Even “King Coucus” was forestalled by this Belf-con srituted “Council of Ten.” A good deal of excitement has been created among the secret friends of the liquor league who have seats in the legislature, inconsequence of the fact that the bill which Messrs. Z&rracber and Brobst brought hither for the “Liquor League,” has found its way into the hands of a correspondent of a Philadelphia paper, much against their wishes, and has been published. The bill provides for a board of appraisers, numbering three for your city, one of whom is to receive his appointment from the members of the legislature for your county: another by the County Commissioners, and one by your city Councils. The graduated scale of licenses ac cording to the value of the property occapied is preserved, but is relatively much lower as to the price of licenses. The bill for the repeal of the “Sunday Law” is a separate one. Its provisions have not yet come to the light. The very idea it embraces is enough to arouse public attention at once. T do not believe even this legislature, bound at many o f it* memhtrt ar<\will repeal that “Sunday Law/’ If secret lobbying, ,/* monrii, aye, that is the term, can pass it, however, it will be pas sed. Nothing but a stern public opinion thoroughly aroused will or can provent it. I*l the press throughout the State look to it. Rest assured I have not sounded the alarm too soon. R- ‘ FITTSBDBGH: FRIDAY MORNING, JAN. 8, 1858. . JJOMTN'A.'riOrJS. r'iiisaizKT-r-KLECTrov, Tuesday, Jan. .12: / . MAYOR,' -■■/■■ James Miller, Direotov of Poor'-A. DAVIuSON. FOR ASSEMBLY, JOHN SCOTT,, of Eons Township. We hate had a strong desire to publish, en tire, the able message of Governor Chase, of Ohio; but lie pressure upon oar columns pre tented it. Wa present an abstract of it on oar first page, and shall glte to-morrow, in full* what he says on National questions. The Democratic Cosvestioj*.—A press 9f matter on our columns prevented' our saying a few words abont the Contention which assem bled at tho Coart House on Wednesday, and put in nomination for Assembly James Balisbury, whom the. Republicans had the pleasure of beat ing last fall. It may not be too i&te to say those few words now. There were .bnt-few delegates present, and after organizing they proceeded with great har mony to the nomination. The Committee on resolutions were then call ed upon to report. Tho—leaders of the Com mittee were office-holders, Messrs. Dunn and Parley both being recipients of favor at the Post - Office crib; Mr. Dunn read the resolutionsin a ,v very.'modest manner, and with a “bated’’ tone of voice. The first resolution was this ■ Resolved, That the Administration of Presi dent Buchanan his, thus far, met the highest expectations of the Democracy of Allegheny oounty; we confidently rely upon bis character, experience and integrity, which led ns to vic tory in 1856, for an honest and a faithful admin istration of oar affaire, and for a fair and on im partial settlement of all public questions en trusted to his care. The ambiguity of the resolution is evident. Perhaps the Democracy of Allegheny county did not expect much of Mr. Buchanan. If, how- was written in good and in good faith accepted, then is it the most monstrous declaration that ever emanated from any body of men, far it declares that all the Democracy said and all they did in the fail of 1856 were falsehoods, that the pleas they then made about “the will of the majority'* were all false, and ■ mere sound and fary, signifying nothing. The remainder of the resolution, it will be observed, speaks quite hopefully of the future. Thst-fe safe. This resolution, which is the en dorsement of James Buchanan, was slid over without, amendment or debate, and passed as carefully and os breathlessly as if the lives of members depended npon.lt. When the Presi dent declared that the resolution bad been adopted, a feeling of relief was manifest, and David Lynch, Esq., who had the Convention in charge, took a deep breath from his capacions hings, dispensed it upon the atmosphere, and, as if it were inspiration, the rest of the Democ racy did likewise. At this juncture & gentleman from the 7th Word arose and said he had a resolution he fished to offer. A motion to adjourn was pend ing, and it was attempted to crowd ont the pro posed resolution by inslstng upon the said : motion. .Men held their breath,in again: “now is the time for this pestiferous Douglass clique ■ to make its spirit manifest” was the evident feeling of the faithful.. Bnt the gentleman from tiie 7th Ward assured the Convention that there was nothing dangerous in what he had to offer: it was only a re-endorsement of the repudiation resolutions which locofocoism endorsed last fall. The Convention breathed freely again. Any thing bnt an endorsement of tho doctrine on which they had foaglif the battle of !*•'•»«, was acceptable. The gentleman, from ihe .Seventh Ward read Uis resolution. A. D. McCalmonf, Esq., opposed it in a manly and outspoken speech. There was a good deal of .fluttering among tho Democracy as Mr. C. proceeded; it was evident that • ‘ con tradiction flew to their heads.” But he pro ceeded to say in substance that he should always vote the Democratic ticket, notwithstanding any disagreement which might arise in reference to repudiation, just as be voted that ticket last fall Col. Gibson, of Pine township, arose and made a famous speech. It was quite plain, however, that he ‘foresaw the ark of safety which held an office for him, about to tnmble to pieces among the waves of “ faction.” lie read, with sonorous voice, the famous resolutions against preachers riding in the cars on passes, as subversive of good morals, etc. . ,i; - Mr. Roberta then ijilßStjTnuThus the Democracy was kept * ‘bnr- Eonlona.” WeSaw never seen *« frightened a sot of men as these were before lie administra tion was endorsed, nor a more distracted set afterwards. v Lei os now gite Mr. Scott a rote snob as Haurt WEAVfiiHgot on Tuesday. Let us show these “terrified”'Democrats another specimen of our thunder, and bide our time to route them in tho next general-campaign. The times are ripening fast for action; justice must take place and that right speedily. Fbom Kansas.—Qri.vn.uio, Kansas, Monday, Dec. 28, 1857.—The disturbances in the South west arc over, at least for tho present. All the Missourians suddenly dispersed, on receiving Lane’s proclamation, that bona fide peaceful set tlers would be protected, bat that all Ulssourians’ found with arms in their bands would be hang'd. The “rebellion” prisoners at Fort Scott are all 6d at liberty. Having gained all they demanded, the Free State men, under Lane, have returned to their homes, and he arrived in Lawrence Saturday night. The last detachments of t’. S. troops that went down to assist in “subduing” Lano and his men, will arrive at Fort Scott about tbred days, after the restoration of peace! Fort Scott is not, os many suppose, now occu pied by the U. S. troops. It is an abandoned military post, which was sold by our Government to a company of Pro-Slavery men, soon after the organization of this territory. U was sold for $5,000, though its improvement had cost the United State over $120,000 ! During the excitement now prevailing the country is full of the wildest rumors. The latest comes from Independence, and states that a requisition is already out for. “Jim” Lane, to arrest him for high treason. It is not generally believed. Such an event would do more than anything else to inflame the bitter public feeling throughout tho Territory. —Ciin f*«c.
