The daily . utterances with which the pep. ple are greeted betray this purpose. =mistake. ably; and the voters of Allegheny co u nty are to be made believe, if unblushing assurance can achieve it, that the Know Nothing platform ie all that anti-Slavety men can. or ought to:desire, notwithstanding the platform itaelf gives the ef. fort the lie in a most emphatic manner. This purpose was shown at Beading, during the sitting of the State . The Reading platform, says one of these hon est men, puts Millets:wend Anti-Slavery on e common footing, and makes one as much the ob ject of the party, as the other. It does no such thing. It expressly says that Anti-Slavery forms no part whatever of its principles rued objects, and that it recognizes among its adherenbi the same latitude of judgment upon that as upon other subjects not embraced within the range of its purposes. Whateier Anti-Sliverynllersaces follow ore a mere eipression of opinion, of no bindisig . . force whatever. How could they be ? The Know Nothing party does not: initiate its members upon the Heeling platform. It makes them swear that they will never vote for a for eigner or s Catholic, or for one who is not of their brotherhood; but it exacts no oath of them tut they will , vote forno man who is =- sound oii - the Slavery question. It binds Its members,. amerce!, with the soleinilty of an oath, on the Native-qiestioe, atidlesves the other to take care of Itself. It must require a man mile's, indeed, of the truth, to scent that the two questions stand on an equality in the party. Whenever the Ritual is so amended as to em brsce Anti-Slavery Sling with its Nativism, it will be time cmorigh to put that claim forward. "The Amerioanparty," says another oracle, slhae.boldlyxnnotMcedito determination touppose the last and most infamous aggression of the South, and to wrest from it the ill gotten spoil yielded up to slavery by the dough-face Douglass end his -contemptible crew—leaving less immi nent questiomi, upoi which people differ more, to be settled heceaftei." Where? When? At Betiding it boldly announced that "the ques tion of slavery should not be introduced into the Platform of the American Party, being convinced that no melt &nut waa extended to be embraced within Oa principlu and objects," "nd that It al lows to its members "the right. of freedom of . opinion and discussion on ass and every other subject not:Mended to be embraced in the design. of the organization." The slavery question, then, was not intended to be embraced, within its de signs; it is a question which It lays ought not to be introduced into its platform; and it con cedes to all its members the utmost freedoM of opinion upon it; as it does upon any other ques tion that is outside of Nativism. And is Nat i. party to oppoo' the aggressions of the South I It does, . indeed, "inseruttoir as the' subject has . been forced" upon it, (and this it :says to show how reluctant it was to torah it at all,) express an opinion that the repeal of the Missouri Com promise was wrong, and that Congress should refuse to admit new slave 'states, from north of the Missouri iine ; but having taken care to pro test that this Is no part of "its principles and objects," and leaving to its members the utmost "freedom of opinion" upon it, there is not a Show Nothing in the Ma soot t who may not it utterly and still be as od a member of the party as ever. To bring f a party iwith Riche platform as one which hie "announced its determination to resist the last and most Infamous aggression of the South," is. to sup pose that - tumid° not know themeamngof words and will swallow 'as veritable any fabrication that ingenuity may devise... Crairsiewn AND MAHONI3O RAILROAD Cox rmer.—From a circular issued by the President of this important work, isnot; Plums, Esq., we gather the following facts: The length of this road, from Cleveland to New Castle, is 88 miles. Seventy miles, from Cleveland to Youngs tole, are expected to be finished this year. The • iron is purchased--about 2000 tons have already been delivered on the line, and the track laying 1 is commenced. The CoMpany have closed Re gotiitions for the sale of ; an issue of first mort gage bonds, to supply iron and equip the line. At Youngstown the coal fields are reached, which will at once afford the road a profitable business. The ooet of the road from Cleveland to Youngs town is estimated at $2,000,000. ' The Company expect to place the balance of the road, from Youngstown to New Castle, 18 miles, under con `tract during this season, to be finished next . . 1 Spring. At New Castle it will connect with the North-Western road, intended to connect that place.with the Pennsylvania road at Blairsville. We think it is to be regretted that some move- - merit is not made to connect the Ohio and Penn-. sy ivonia road with the. lerveland and Mahoning road at` New Castle. During — this' time I profesi to have acquired a pretty thorough insight into the newspaper business • and the state of the craft, and to know something of Its difficalties, its labors, and its recompensa.. The result of my observations enables me to state, MI a fact, that' putdishers of newspapers are more poorly rewarded than' anj - other class of men in the United States who. invest an equal amount of labor, capital and' thought They are expected to do more Berries for less pay—to stand more sponging and "rlead-heading,"--to puff and de fend more people, without fee or hope of reward, thrik_any ether clue. They credit wider and longer ; get oftener cheated ; suffer more pecu niary loss; and are oftener the victime'of mis placed oonlidence, than any other calling in the community. People pay a printer's bill more reluctantly than any other. It goes Mader with them to spend a dollar on a valuable newspaper than ted on a useless gewgaw; yet every body avails himself of the services of the editor :and printer's ink. HoW many-professional, and pn.' Utical reputations and fortunes have been created and sustained by the friendly, though unrequited, pen of the editor 1- . How many embryo towns and cities have been brought into ootloe, and puffed into prosperity by the press , How many railroads, now in uncessful opera ' tion, would have foundered but for the mitt awe of the "lulu that moves the world ?" In short, what branch of American industry or ac tivity, has not beett .promoted, stimulated and defended by the press ? And Who has tendered it more than a miserable pittance for its mighty services? The tams of fatitiOn and folly, the haunts of appetite and dissipation, are thronged with an eager crowd bearing gold in their palms, and the commodities there Tended are sold st enormous profits, though intrinsically worthless, and paid for with scrupulous punotu , •lity; while the counting room of .the newspa per is the seat of jawing, sheapping, trade orders and passim. It is made a point of honor to liquidate a grog bill,-but not of dishonor 'to repudiate a printer's bill. "It most not be denied that newspaper pro— prietors are largely to blame for this state of things. They practice a miserable, idiotic sys tem of cutting under, or "ratting," in their ef forts to obtain patronage. By putting a low value on one-half -of their services, and "throw ing the other half in," they inflict mutual injury upon the whole business; and when men under rate their owu services, the rest of community will not hesitate to put on a yet lower estimate. "The newspaper business is overdone: The day for starting new papers with the hope of making them profitable„ is past, save in a few western locahties. In the whole State of Ohio, there - are not more than Jim daily papers—one of which is the Leader, that are malting enough money to justify prudent owners ,in continuing their publication. I can call to mind but two or three daily papers in the United States, °stab.: liahed within, the paid six or eight years, that have proved profitable.
