The sonnet average cost of teaching each pupil amounts to $8,79. The annual cost for the tu ition of the pupils of the gramniar, Recolidaryr, primary, and unclassified schools is $5,70;-for the normal school the annual cost is $26 do.; for the high school $33,66. The cost of each pupil of the night schOole is $3,25; the total coat of the night schools in Cpenition during the winter months is $20,000. This sum the report says should,be deducted from the expenses,in estimating the average cost of tuition in the oth er schools, making a reduction of about 88 cents per pupil. In the early part of the year 1851, s general advance of 20 per cent. was made in the salaries of the teschere, taking effect on the Ist of April, from which cause there is a smell increase In the rate of tuition in the present re port, and a somewhat larger ono will appear on the report for the current ear. The previous salaries were those fixed fifteen years ago, and from the inadequacy, the schools have been con stantly losing their best teachers.. BOOKS, MUSIC, &C. V - KW MUSIC. NEW MUSIC—H.
