Among those present, 'WO noticed Mr. Kerr, the present efficient. county Superinten dent. ' The exercises were opened by prayer by Mr. !Dixon: Mr ; Forcer of the Fourth Ward then read as essay on the duty of the Educated. Dixon of the NM Ward gave an „illustrative of proportion. • He was followed by Was Glass of Birmingham, who read a paper entitled ' ,, Litermy Adventures?' The essay was _ highly commended both in Its matter-and man- Mr, Avery of the Ist Ward then read the new School Law, (which has passed its first reading in the House of Representatives,) providing for - the consolidation of all the Wards of Pittsburgh . into one independent School District, for Edema 'thmal purposes. : • Having adjoirrued for - dinner,-the Association again, convened at lialf.past one o'clock. Mr. - Avery' concluded the reading of the School. Law. The discussion - thereon was, on motion, deferred ' to bear Mr. Carey read apaper on the best meth od of teaching the first : principles of Grammar. He " ;thought it bmot to fix woods indelibly upon the 'memory and afterwards give the pupil an ono ; derstanding of their meaning. , He was evident. !ly in love with the "learning by heart system" system. , Thompson, on the other hand, airenn otaly advocated the theory'of education which first teaches the child to think, which Tooke to I the development of its intellect as well as its !memory; which explains what it teaches. We I thought the Professor had decidedly the best of I the argument. A committee of five ladies was then appointed to nominate officers for the ensuing year. The committee retired and during their deliberations "the Etched LSw was taken up and discussed by several gentleman. A widow woman, herself poor and 'having a_family of five OM dein, took pity on their miserable candition„and reonived, them into her humble abode. The nun , dies consist of two men and mix children—their ; mothers haying both.died on ship board. All 1 the children: were: attacked by the" measles and are now suffering under that painful disease.— , They were visited by a physician, who pronoun i cal them too sick to be removed to the poor house. They have a very scanty supply of clothing, and one or two of the children are in a state of almost absolute nakedness.
