OF HOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE YOUNG KA'S MERCANTILE LIBRARY AND ME, CHARICS' INSTITUTE. Clesii.r.nalr—Wa congratulate you at tho conclusion or anotber'year, upon the increas ing prosperity Mille Mercantile Library and Mechtinics' Institute. Daring the past year it has gained in public estimation, and enlarged its"capacity for use: It is always a source of gratification, after larking an inventory and making out your bal ance, to find that profit, and not loss, has crown ed the labors of the - isar especifilq fthe la- . bor expended has-becit for the purpime of pro-, riding a source to which the young men of our city may repair for moral and intellectual cul ture. fly referring to the leak annual report . , you will find, at that date, upon the register, the names of 305 members, including 10 life mem bers. 'During the year 181 new members base been added, and lost by resignation 72, leaving us, notwithstanding this helm , lons, the•bacar some gain of 109, making the number of mem - - bees at this . time 414, including 10 life mem bers N0;..12'.14;d0d, and The promptness with which a large number of fast and zealous members cif the Institute, responded to the recommendation thrown out in the report of the Board of Directors last year, indicates clearly the gratifying fact, 14a! , this Association is not to be evaneseent in its character, but to acquire strength and stability from year to year. If this spirit thus mani fested in behalf of our organization,: con be kept awake, if the energy and indhetry-• dis played at the commencement of the year can be kept alive and active, the number of our members will continue to augment, and the fu ture prosperity of the - Institute be placed be yond doubt. The resignation annually, of large number of members, very naturally gives rise to the .queseion—Why is this the case what.is the cantle' It certainly is not because the object in view is reached, or is unworthy. the pursuit of rational- thluds;.this has not, and never will be alleged whilst there remains mind, the powers. of which need and require its praper . •. =tl2=l The reasons generally assigned by those who relinquish their ' membership, nig thin.--"I seldom, if ever,.sisit your rooms; !have more books than I read, and konsminently do not need any from your library; I subscribe for a number of newspapers, and consequently do not require the use of yours." Do these gentlemen remember, think you, that this large city num bers Its theitianuils who are not tio wEII forniehed, and must, yes, are obliged:TO:took to such an institution ns ours, - for what)hese well to 'do citizens have at their homes.' Now, such re , sore —if they are worthy the appellation.— though they may not appear Co. are neverthe less strongly tinctured with selfishness, and if universally acted oat, would dry up the foun tains of benevolence, and close the doors not on ly of public libraiies, but of all institutions hav ing in view public in place of private good. We set you, Ind put the same question lo those who base left onecompany, in its valid, or even; plausible reason, why any person who has the means, should decline contributing to the erec tion or support eta Iforpital or House of Refugt, because they . do not expect to become inmates of it 't.hemielves? 'lf no, then may our young men, and eld ones, too, decline giving aid or countensuie to the Mercantile Library and Me chrmics' Institute. You wiJI, and the public must pardon us—if pardon he needed—for speaking no plainly upon this subject, it is one In which we have a com mon and drop interest, knowing thst the aroral subicriptions of the memoenhip is the life blood of the Association, its capital, strength, and motive power, without which the machinery moat cease to more. We cull upon you, fellow members, to stand by the Institute, co-operating with the Board of Directors you may choote this evening, and prevail apin and again, not only to the young men, but to our citizens of every age, the just and well grounded claims of- the Institute to their favor. and we cannot doubt but that success will folloi the effort. The Library Committee reported in their last 000001 - statement the number of 1477 volumes to the Library, during the past year 112 G vol umes have been added by purchase, and Zit by the bitldiog of teriadicals. We are ONO ludellea to the lion. Moses Hamp ton, (or 16 volume 'o( valuable public documents; to Capt. John Herron,' for 110 volumes, lb of which, are lectures on metaphysics. natural pbilossphy, logic, and history of philosophy in umauferipti to J. A. Forsyth, Sr., & Dickeys G. Holtzman, J. IL Holmes, I volume "each, and to Vr. 11. Sellers for i volumes of National Gazette and Intelligencer, bound,in 1118 S volumes by donation: making the number of volumes upon our shelves at this date 1891. This addition to our Library may not tte con sidered large, yet the same annual increase for ten years, allowing, which we do not grant, we should not be able to do more, would give us at the expiration of that time, a Library of 5617 yolames. The magnificent and costly !d -ittoes are built bj placing a brick at 'time upon the walls, an I the most valuable and extensive Libtariya of which the country can bout, have been formed by the addition of book after book; and this shonld encourage In not to despise the day of'im►ll things; not to weary In well doing. We haVegtermitted ourselves to indulge the hope that our enterprise would commend itself to the favorable notice of some of one wealthy citiseni iioj4 MATTERS. --- REPORT in other places, to whose munificence many public libraries owe' not only their existence, but their . prosperity. In this, however, up to this period,• we have been disappointed, bet as "faith Is the evidence of things not seen, and the substance of things hoped for," we do not des. pair of Its realization at some, though it may be a distant day. It is a fact that public, Libra ries cannot prosper, wo mean, be of rapid growth, without the aid of the wealthy, and no, less a fact, that they should yield such aid,- but if they cannot see the_propriety or utility of up holding atutprodifig forward an institution eo competeit to do good in their midst, we must, as we have heretofore done, appeal to those of limited means dud large views, to stand by their offspring. Books, however numerous sad vale:Ole, and however gnat may have been the care and lodg ment used in tbeir.iielection, canimpart no last ing benefit to their possegnors, unless the Con tents are read and treasured up in the mind.— In order to ascertain the see made of the hooks,., we have examined the Librarian's Register, for that purpose. and find that in 1849, 1792 Vol-1 ernes, in 1850, 2572 Volumes, and In the year just terminated, 4372 VO;OMPS have been taken from the Library. It is in the rending al the books, thereby gathering up new ideas, and the acquisitiOn of important and useful knowledge, that we should find onfficieutencouragement to stimulate as, to persevere in our efforts to con. tribute to the moral toad inteNeetnal character of our city. For the handsome frame surrounding the rate nese of Judge Baldwin, we are indebted' to Mc. J. J. Gillespie, one of ouranemberr. Lectures of a popttionind selentifio character have formed a feature to the operations of rind , bir Institutions, in all parte of the oauntry, and have been foam], when_delivered by persons of undoubted ability, the mane of,,repleniehing their treasuries, and of contributing to tho mental enJoyment of those attendles therm The Board of Dirsdorn, =ions to profit by the xx. perienee Or 0141:1113, at the soliritailon of, s lugs snubber of nitztmr,' amt th accordance with their own elates; corresponded, - Sul, In As pc, with Mr. B. W. Eatemon,'. Of Migazolan- setts, and affected an engagement `with him to deliver a course of sit lectures. ;The course weal:de:lly successfid : the audience In attend. lace upon each lecture was large, and embraced a good portion of the beauty and Intelligence of our city, ant aided our finances very mate rially. Mr. .1. IL Glidden, well known in this and other cities of the country as an author and ac complished oriental scholar, was' engaged, at the instance of a number of citizens, early in the Fall, to deliver foot lectures allots the recent discoveries in ancient Nineveh wad Babylon. This course, owing to the unfavorable season of the year, 'was not so well attended as the first. The result of the lectures, especially the first course, not only encouraged, but made it ob ligatory, upon the Ihrecters to try a third coons, or incur the Vispleasuni of the . members gen erally. As the winter months; the season of the year deemed most suitable for lectures, approached, correspondence was bad with Mr. E. I'. Whip ple, of Boston. a gentleman of decided literary attainments, and much reputation as a rapula2:, rleaturer, and an engagement made for four lea lures The lectures of Mr. Whipple delighted an auditory respectable in ;lambert, and -equal is point of beauty and talent, to any we had the pleasure of seeing at the Emerson course; yet failed financially to meet our expectations, -the receipts falling short of the necessary ex pulses. We ticlinhwledge gratefully the very able and Interesting lecture of Judge McClure, upon Mechanical Philosophy, which fixed the attention and received the hearty approbation, of his audiaoco. The Board of Directors do not like to complain, but it some times happens, when complaint Is undo, that the proper reme dy ia provided undo cure effected. They therefore state—yet with regret and mortibeation,—that in this city, noted for the enterprise and lidustry ef its citizens, lectures got rap fqr their gratification and improvement, the proceeds arising from them, to be applied to an object to praiseworthy no a putitie'library, have not been fully sustained, whilst thousands of dollars are annually raked from their pockets to line those of strolling musicians, and moun tebsuka of every grade. The fact is bed enough, and we forbear comment on the subject. When your partiality placed us in office, we - found an encumbrance of about tfisoo of debt, hanging over our heads, which could pot be met, according to the report of the Treasurer, without an additlori by some means, to the cur rent receipts of the year. An appeal was made to you; on halal( of the Treasury, and it was not made in vain. Member rafter member was added to our list by your untiring Industry, and our ationioal wants were bupplied. -And, hilt for an appropriation to the Library Com mittee for the purchase of books, we.should he able to report an entire freedom from debt. One indebtedness, at this time, amounts to the sum of $289. To provide at once for the liqui dation of this debt. and to secure an additional aeon to be expended in the purchase of hooks, 'lro propose to join you in an effort to °halo at least one hundred new riont,z, If we wish to prosper, if this institution is to be worthy of its chartered name, and the city in which it is to .zed, every member most, or should manifest his attachment, to it, by vigor -0113 effOrts to promote its welLl.heing, The ini tiatory step has been taken In.-this matter, nod Si honorable men, pledged to a noble cause; we cannot recede or stand atilt.
