CHALLENGE ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS IS OFFERED TO TEST PhiladclpUia Against New Yoiik. In 1858 tiie Corn Exchange Bank of Philadelphia pur meed one of Evans & Watson's Bank.' arfii Burglar- proof Safes, which is now in use. in their vault, con structed in the manner that Evans & Watson's Safes are /for that purpose, with their Patent Alphabetical Bock ipn, -Since that; time the above-mentioned Bank pur" • chased one -of “Billie's fso-cailod) Burglar-proof Safes, ’ ’ ; The officers of tho Bank, in purchasing LUlte’e Sate, presumed'that they were getting a better safe than those made by Evans & Watson fbr 'that purpose ; and said Cora Exchange Bank officers having recom mended this Kew York Safe, and' ih doing eo have di verted many thousands of dollars to Troy, Kew York, instead of retaining it among Philadelphians,; upon whom they depend for patronage, I, David Evans, will now give an opportunity of proving whether the Safe they purchased from Evans & Watson or , the one pur chased of It. XiUio in the-best . Barglar-proof.Safe. _r will place'Ono Thousand Dollars it ficy-ftlio -oibcbAtWxnuivror any other person in the; United States who lias consldonee In hiliie’s Safe, shall place the same amount in the haudsof a respectable person ; and I, with one man to assist me, wilL operator on their (Billie) Safe, and they may get any two men in the United States to operate on the Barglar-proof Safe made by Evans & Watson, and in use at the present time}n the said Bank. And if I succeed in getting into their Safe sooner than they shall get into the Evans & Watson Safe, then I am to receive the two thousand dol-: lars; lmt if they 3ncceed in getting into the Evans :& Watson Safe sooner than I do the Lillie Safe,- they shall receive the two thousand dollars. Provided that they shall not make any more noise than I make In getting into Billie's Safe, as noise is what burglars dread most. ; Kow, as I have given this opportunity of testing the qualities of the two Safes, I hope the. Bank officerslwill -be as, willing to have the test made as they were in re- \ commending Billie's (so-called) Burglar proof Safes heretofore. And as they are the only Bank having one of each of the different make of Safes in nse.'l consider this Bank tho best place to test them. Bet the. trial be made, and thus demonstrate to the- Philadelphia public which is the best Barglar-proof Safe. Bet there baa, committee appointed from each of the Banks to see that; there ia fair play on both sides, . v I claim, the right to change .the combinations of the lock on tho Evanß & Watson Safe, and no person but myself: to know the combinations, and they to do the same with the lock on their Lillie Safe before, com mencing operations. I will eow state the manner in which I propose to operate: I first saw off the brass rim overthe lock dial; I then drill a holo through the door, directly'over,.the i dial, as close as possihW,* and immediately over the centre. I then insert a piece of wire, aboni the eighth of an inch thick, through the hole so drilled, turning the knob of the lock dial to the right until the pin enters the first tumbler, when it will pass in about a quarter of ah inch; then turn the knob to the left till the pin enters into the second tumbler; then to the right again UU it passes through the next tumbler, and in case of a larged Bank Safe, again to the left until it passes into the last tumbler; I then throw the bolt, first pulling the pin out. CAUSE OF THE SAFE CONTROVERSY. Lillie’s agents have been, in the practice of going into banks and other places throughout the City and State, And if they found in use .any other make of Safe except his own, would inform such persons oV hank oflieers that he (Lillie’s agent) could either pick the lock or; break into the Safe in from five to ten minute.?. Among others he.called at the Consolidation Bank, and told the President that lie conld pick their lock, made by EVANS & ten minutes; ou Mr. TV. H, Blumer, Banker, at Allentown, Pa; , told him the same; also, on the Treasurer of the West Chester Railroad, add told him he could break into their Bank and Burglar-proof Safe In five minutes.. When the parties; to whom he made these assertion aoffered to give him the opportune ty of making good Lis misrepresentations, he has al ways found some loophole to creep out. This is the way that the New Yorkers come here and falsify and iniu.ro Philadelphia’s manufacturers. PIIIDADPLPHIANS!
