THE CITY. PRESBYTERIAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY. —From tha report of the executive committee of this society, we learn some interesting facts. In regard to the origin of the several books of the Old Testament, it says: 3loees woo the fleet historian through whom an authentic history has been obtained; and iu the Psalms there is beauty and eloquence not found outside of Divine revelation. The New Testament furnishes the very foundation of historic truth, from which we can drink in full and copious draughts of knowledge, morality, and religion. The tlrot records of the society's existence date as far back ee 1791, at which time a committee of the General Assembly was appointed to gather and compile etatietacs of the Church in North America. It continued for forty years, and then disappeared. This caused the minutes to become incomplete. No efforts were made to rein state it until 1852, when the General Assembly convened at Charleston. it was then resolved to form the seCiety on come permanent basis. At first It consisted of Pitt one branch afterward, in 1854, the plan of the organi• nation was' ea altered that all the different branches of the Presbyterian Church were included. It con tinued to g:ow in usefulness and prosperity ; but the events of the last ythr have caused a melancholy change. The political strife raging in this country etched the avenues from which much knowledge was to be obtained. Along with this the receipts fell off considerably, mad many rare and valuable books that appeared in the market the society had to forego purchasing, not having funds to pay for them. However, 400 books and 3,500 pamphlets were added to their li brary during the past year. The library at present con sists of 3,000 volumes, 50 Airs of newspapers, anal other miscellaneous nastier. At present the society feels the need of a eatalognr, but this they cannot procure until they ritifse sufficient fluids to inset the present currentex penses. They appeal to the liberal for aid. The report closes by desiring that the anomentens conflict of the Government against treason may prove successful to the existence and integrity ad the Union, the Constitution, and the Government of the United State,. PROFESSIONAL THIEVES AND THE NINETY-DAY LAW.—The Supreme Court has de livered, among other opinions, one on the constitution ality of the •• moles - stone' thief, or pickpocket law." SURGICAL OPERATIONS.—The volun teer 'physicinn of the Cooper Shop 'Hospital, Dr. Andrew Ilehinger, bee performed a couple of operations on two of the woundea e.dciers v.ho recently arrived at that in stitution. A leaden ball was taken front the arm of one of the in lands, This ball retained its original roundness on one aide, but the opposite Was concave, where it had nom itself to the bone. It was something in shape like a cres cent. The other operation was extracting a piece of lead, being a part of a ball. with ragged sharp edge. This en tered the shoulder, making a gash about two and a quar ter inches in length, and extending down to the lower part of the scapula, where it became imbedded in the muscle. The patients were placed under the influence of ether or chloroform, and Buff red no pain during the operations. The doctor alas extracted a piece of bone from the eye of one of the soldiers. It was probably a piece of the skull of a more unfortunate companion-in-arms, broken by a rebel bullet. All the inmates are doing as well as can be expected. VOLUNTEER REFRESHMENT HOSPI TALS.—The hospitals connected with the Volunteer Ref resbment Saloom have. since their establishment, taken charge of and administered to at least 1,800 sick and we ended Walrus without • urns cost to the bleat; or General Government. The medicines and all the neces sary aril( les have been contributed. The Cooper-Shop Hospital had, since the 29th of Octo ber, treated about one hundred and fifty patients. Prior to the abere data a large number had revel-red medical treatment through their phyeicbm, Dr. U. Nebinger, The Union Hospital, in der the care of Dr. Ward, has also treated a large number of soldiers. Both hospitals have accrmpliehrd wonders. and it is but proper that our citizens should know chew; things, es net one penny - re muneration M taken. .The design of these institutions is to afford, temp.nrarily, relief to passing troops. The soldiers are very loth to leave these little hospitals for the big ones. The beautiful new church edifice of the Fifth Baptist (formerly Eansom-street) Church, at Eighteenth and Spring Garden streets, is rapidly approaching CODS. I pletion. The congregation now worship regutarly in the chapel, which was finished eanie months ago, and under ! the c flicieut ministry of the new pastor, the Roy. J. B. I Simmons, there has been a large increase in the member ship. The resignation of Mr. Winston, on account of his Southern affinities, soon after the commencement of the war, has been evidently no serious loss, inasmuch as his successor is in all respects better fitted for the post, besides being a thorough Union man. On Tuesday eve nine last a concert was given in the chapel in aid of the building fund of the church, which, from its marked succese—all who attended having been delighted with it— will probably be repeated. The following is a brief sy- I sepsis of a sermon recently preached by Mr. Simmons, Dom this text of Scripture: For lem a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as ! all my fathers were."—Psalm xxxix, 12. These words, said the preacher in openiog, bad been eddieseed to Coe by King David; they had been the lan- I melee of the latter in a time of trouble.
