The absenoo of jurors and the gtineral dullness Of the proceedings served materially to thin the crowd of spectators who are generally on hand when their presume is least de male. • ' Joieph W, Humphries was brought up on a writ of habeas corpus, charged with passing a counter feit $5 note, purporting fellatio been issued by.tii Western Bank of ,Phtbdelphia. After a ,heartng, the defendant `was reinanded to await his trial at the next term of tho court. Samuel Larsalere was before tho court upon a writ ofhabeas botpus. charged with obtaining $lB4 under:fable pretences. The feels of the case are these: the presenter bought a horse from the de fendant, receiving"guarantee es to the soundness of theherse' and paid $164 for it. Upon the first usintof the borne syrilptorns of disease were dis covered. Ile died in the course of five days. The defendant was diseharged. Daniel Dougherty, Esq., counsel for George P. Peterman, called the attention of his honor Judge Thompson to the'faet that Peterman had pleaded guilty to the Lukens forgeries in the month of De cember last; that he• had been convicted of the Toram forgeries early in the Spring; and yet he had not been to this day called np for sentence. Mr. Dongberty stated that as no additional charge has been preferred against Peterman, and as ho has been kept in prison, considering the circum stances, an extraordinarily long ported of time, it was hlitattiro that sentence should be passed upon hies at etre. Judge Thompson said that Peterman had both tried before Judge Allison; that ho would call the attention 6f the latter to the case; and son.' tenee would be passed on Saturday next. In the Court of Common Pleas, before Judge Allison.' in -the matter of the North Branch Road vs. Philadelphia City Passenger Railroad, Mr. Campbell, on behalf of the North Branch Road, asked leave to withdraw tho flied, - stating that he propmesd to file a bill at once in the Sapme Court against the, defendants, with a view to ob tain a more speedy deoi, ion of the Supreme', Court than could be obtained by proceeding to, on the first itustanee, a final hearing In the Common Pleas. The com plainant shipped in August last Marseilles to go to Malaga, and then to return to this oountry. Upon arriving at Malaga he was knocked down by tho defendant._On another occasion' ho was -kicked :from the forecastle aft this was while the vessel was off Gibraltar. From that time till the arrival of the 'vessel here, ho was kicked as much as six times In one day. About a week agorhe was struok with a belaying pin on the cheek, the wound made by which is still visible. Defendant hail used the moot 'offensive language to the complainant. From the , cross-examination it seems that the eeeond mate alleges disobedience of orders by the prosecutor. , The hearing was continued until this morning at ten o'clock, this connection we must award a word of praise. to Deputy . United States Marshal John F. Sharkey, for the interest that he has invariably manifested in behalf of un fortunate seamen. • • EXPLOSION OF A LOCOMOTIVE AT SORANTOtt.- 2 The Scranton (Pa.) Republican of the 27th inst., states that on Monday last five persons wore.in stantly killed by an explosion of a locomotive in that place. "At the time of the explosion four persons wore on the 'engine--Robert Starett, the engineer, Elias &Wertz, of Pittson, formerly of Moscow, where he kept hotel, and where he was then bound ; liam,ll.-Allen, a carpenter of Hyde Park, who wee going out to" number 0," and Patrick Welsh, a trackman, who lives near Moscow, and had come to Scranton after a doctor to see his sick wife. The fireman, John Brown, was standing near the engine when the explosion took place. It had been brought out of thO enginehouse during the morning, and had boon used about the yard tbr some time, and was about starting out with a coal train when the explosion took place. The unfortunate men were hurled upwards With terrific violence, the engineer and another falling on-the farther aide of the engine; one in the tender; anotherjust a few feet this side; while „Bohwarts fell some ten rode Off. Brown was wounded about the head, and had one of his arms fractured. , , The verdict of the fury was, the parties came to their deaths from the explosion of the 100010- tive Virginia; at the Scranton depot, by the reck lessness of the engineer wedging down the safety valve,' thereby preventing an escape of steam at say - measure; under such circumstances an explo sion was inevitable: , - • - • FINAL ipm pn COMMERCIAL.
