ULYSSES S. GRANT. (NuhJcct to decision oT Republican National vonvonuon.; Republican State Ticket. FOR STATE THKARPREIt, SAMUEL BUTLER, OF CHESTER COUNTY. Republican County Ticket. For Jury Commissioner, J. V. BONNERT, OF JONES TOWNSHIP. Washington Letter. From our regular correspondent. Washington, D. C, Oct. 27, 1879, The Administration is safe ut Inst In returning to the White House after so long a sojourn ninong the peo pie, the President may well appreciate tbit he is snugly ensconced ouee more where the American citizen cannot compel him to stump speaking and to witness trotting mulches at country fairs. Hut on the other hand he may wish himself among his agricultural friends again in view of the hoards of office seekers who have pounced down on him since his return to urge their peculiar claims for place. Our citi zetis are determined to secure the re moval of one of our District Commis sioners who has in many ways rendered himself obnoxious to all classes, and as it is taken for granted this official will be decapitated in deference to our wishes, several of our disinterested citizens are, in person aud by delegations endeavoring to show Mr. Hays that they are willing to be forced into becoming the sue cessor of the outgoing official. Prom inent among the numerous applicants is Sayles J. Bowen. His prominence is due to the fact that he was elected Mayor by the people, prior to our dis trancuiseinent by Congress, and served as such for several years, when uie opposiiion succeeded in ousting mm under the cry of "Reform." The promise of reform in our municipal affairs have proved as fallacious as the promises of lessened taxes made by a New York City Board of Aldermen, out they served to secure Mayor Uowen's defeat. Now that ho is en deavoringto secure u virtual re-election cue uiijiusiuun are pouring out upon mm an their vials of wrath and villi ncation and if their representations are to be received without allowance, he is indeed a terrible sinner. But we are sceptical to the highest degree JSo one can show him guilty of mal feasance or corruption. The ills of administration were never cured by jus successor hut rather, as in all u ... : u ... vuiuuiu uuinuii juurmitics, were in creased with years until under Boss isuepuera they culminated and Con gress wiped out everything of the old order of things. Wherein Bowen was Worse or better than his predecessors or successors is incomprehensible to Uh and we believe, to others, save our i .. i . . i . . uiu lugy eiomeni mat, hate and curse ! 1 iLiiuvuuuiia imu innovators more re ligiously than a Bourbon did Napole onism. We hope Mr. Hayes will appoint him. The widow Oliver who sued Senator Cameron for breach of promise lias a hard time of it in our courts owing to her inability to meet judicial expenses, Her case seems hopeless unless some one will assist her pecuniarily, and that seems highly improbably, for any wouid-oe beuefector must uecessarly assist her under the consciousness that, he may, like Mr. Cameron, have eventually to render a second con tribution to keep himself out of the courts at her instance. Another char acter here which causes much com ment though of a more charitable nature, is General Grant's brother, urvme. Almost any day he is to he seen or the steps of the Post-Office. There is nothing in his appearance to attract the attention of strangers, though such of those who knew him several yeurs ago WUI'11 he lived a dashing life with his cigars and L TT nurses, no is a man or square com pact build, Inclined now to corpuleucy aud goes rather shabbily clad, hardly Hhabbily either, but with a blue suit of clothes, showing the need of brush mgand attention, his head covered with a black slouch hat, rather crumpled and worn down over the eyes ; on his leet a low cut pair of shoes the heels wore aslant, between which auu his pants is exposed a pair of white (once) half-hose. This com prises the outward makeup of Orville Grant, brother of the General and .Ex-President. In face and figure Orville is not unlike his distinguished brother. He is somewhat taller but has the same oval face, wears his whiskers cut short and has the same shaped head. Orville's eyes differ from the General's. They are of deep blue, small, but have a penetrating giance. in many characteristics Or villeislike the General. Healmost always is alone, is quite reticent seldom speaking to anyone unless nrst accosted. He seems to be labor ing under the hallucination that be is weighed down with business cares and has many air castles in course of men tal construction though he seldom intrudes his visionary schemes upon uie uncuuuii vi strangers. 1st.
