Mix &wnte. Henry A. Parsons, Jr. Editor THURSDAY, SEPT. 10, 1876. Attention Republicans 1 The Republican Primar ies will be held Saturday, Sept. IS. The County Con vention will be held Tues day, Sept. 21. Remember the day and date. From the Pittsburgh 7tr7 Tho Result at, Erie. The mountain at Erio has labored and brought forth a ridiculous result. The Dcmocrauy of Pennsylvania have nominated for Governor and State Treasurer Pershing and Piolctt, and adopted a pusillanimous pla'form. We pay pusillanimous for the reason that the majority in the Convention were pronounced expansionists, and were clamorous in and out of place for more money, until the "expediency" element in organization compelled them to take to cover. IlaviDg the power and the desire, they had not the courage to in sist on inflation in the platfoitn, but ac cepted the declaration, though diJor- in somewhat in pbraseoloqv. of the Republican State Convention al, Lan caster on the subject, as follows: "That the volume of currency be made and kept equal to the wants of trade." Th3 more-money Democrats, therefore, have gained nothing at Erie. So far as the resumption act of Janu nry last is coucerncd, tho utterance of the Convention is simply the echo of leading Republicans everywnere in this scctioo of tho State. On tho question of the National Dank currency, the peo ple will take issuo with tho Democracy. That currency has for its basis the bonds of the Government, which are eventu ally redeemable iu gold, and the faith and revenues of the Government are pledged to that redemption. Should the policy of the Eric Convention pre vail; and the customs due the Govern ment be made payable in legal tender, there will be no gold revenues to the Treasury with which to redeem our bonds, and repudiation follows. How in case this policy should be adopted, the tenth resolution ot the Convention is to be carried out, is not made plain. Taken altogether, the financial planks ot the pluttoim arc a singular jumble. compared with the following clean cut plank ot the Republican Convention: r.ipniu rree canning, a sate ana uniform nationaj currency adjusted to the growing wants ot the business in teresis of the country, and a Bteady re dution of the national debt The remainder of the platform is piven up to the usual platitudes about the beauties of a Jefferonian Democ racy, States' rights, and abuse of the Republican party. The resolutions concerning the State Treasury are ol the usual "buueombe" order, and on these tho Democracy expect to make their great fight of the campaign Their Investigating Committee wanted the Convention's views in order to put some backbone iu its members to at tempt the performance of an unauthori zed act. This backbone will not serve them, but of this more herealter. The nominee 'or Governor, Cyrus L. Pershing, is an estimable gentleman and an upright jurist. He is a native of Johnstown, Cambria county, born in 1825, and is a graduite of Jefferson College, Canonsburj'. Ho practised law in bis native county, aud at all times lias been an active and unswerv. iog partizan. He was twice defeated lor Congress iu his district, but was successful in getting into tho State Legislature in 1800, where ho re mained five years. In 1809, Judge Williams, of this city, dcieated .Mr, Pershing for Judge of tho Supreme Court. In lS7o, tho Democrats ol Schuylkill renominated Judge Ryau wio was personally distasteful to the members ot the bar. Arank IJughes one of Judge Pershing's henchmen in yesterday's Convention, headed the re. volt against Ryan and induced Mr, Perishing, then residing in Cambria, to run as an independent candidate. The Republican party being iu a hope less minority in Skuylkill county, threw its influence and votes to Persbiug, aud he was elected by 3,000 majority to the President Judgeship of tho district. Ho bas no marked characteristics that constitute hint an available candidate, and as botween him and Governor Hartranft the people of Pennsylvania will doubtless prefer to stand by a well tried and faithful servant. The nomination of Victor E. Piolett is not a good one, and the Democracy will realize the fact. Mr. Piolett is a chronio office seeker in bis section of the State. Ho is a native and resident of Bradford county, ostensibly lives by f arming, which gives him a status among the Grangers ot the east, lie was twice a member of the Legislature, and rau three times for Congress aud was as often defeated. Perhaps Mr. Piolett will be better gauged when it is remem bered he was charged with being one of the lieutenants ot the Fishing Creek Confedercy, which resisted the draft during the rebellion, and caused loss of life and much trouble to the Govern ment. If the records of that infamous organization speaks truly, Mr. Piolctt aided and abetted the armed resistence to the United States officers, when the Nation, by legal proce6, was endeavor ing to recruit its armies from tho able bodied men of the country. It is net to be expected that those who were soldiers and friends of the Union in its time of danger will vote to trust the finances of the State in the hands ol one who was their enemy. The splendid opportunities concern ing which the Democracy wcro bo jubi lant, wore thrown awny at Erie. Ihoir platform docs meet the views of more than two-fifths of their party, ' while their ticket is only partially fatisfactory Now that both parties have the issue made up, so far as platforms and can didates aro concerned, tho campaign may be said to be open. lc.s than eight weeks remain in which to en lighten tho people as to the merits or demerits of the principles of either party, and we anticipate a lively time from now until November 2d- NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
