FRIDAY MORNING: Outbaqxous Assault. —Two men, ono named Daniel Barber, of this city, and the other named Baker, were committed to jail on Sabbath last, by Justice McConniok, of North Huntingdon township, for an ontrageouß assault and battery oh Mr. John Cavett. The defendants had a quarrel with Mr. Cavett, and beat him oruelly. After they left him, he went to ’Squire MoCor miok’s to make oomplaint, where he was followed .by the prisoners, who again commenced a brutal assault upon him in the magistrate’s offioe. The Squlro and his family interfered, whon they were also assaulted, and a daughter of the Squire’s was pretty roughly handled. After,: perpetrating the seoond assault, they made their ceoape, and were followed to this county, whore, after a stout resistance, they wcro capturod by a posse of sixteen men. They were committed to the jail of Westmoreland county, bnt the jail not being suitable to be used, they were about to be removed to the jail in Pittsburgh, on Mon day, which they very much disliked, and were finally penaitted until ntni Court .in an unfinished cell, on their paying all expenses for boarding and guard. Mr. Cavett is a very peaceable, and unoffending oitizen. A Fight ooourred on Wednesday evening, in Hardscrabble, between a number of Irishmen, during which Philip Waters had bis head laid open with a poker in the hands of John Fergu son. Baltimore, August 16—A meeting of merchants w*i held at the Exchange at noon today, to devise means to alleviate the distress of the inhabitants of Norfolk and Portsmouth, who are now suffering from the ravages of the yellow fever. At the Republican meeting to-day, $3OOO were contribu ted for the sufferers at Norfolk and Portsmouth ; a quantity of provisions have been purchased, and a boat is to be dis patched to the above places to-night. August 16.—Parodi and other eminent tal ent of the Italian Opera, propose to give a Grand Concert in this city, for the relief of the suffering at Norfolk, growing ont of the rar&ges of fever. The Yellow Fever at Portsmouth Norfolk, August 15.—Nash Talem, Chief Inspector at the Navy Yard, is <?ead. Hunter Woodis, Mayor of the city is down with the fever. Capt. Barron la eapposed to be dyirg. Dr. Sylvester U also supposed to be in a dying condition. The fever has extended from the infected dis trict to the upper part of the city. G. Brougham, jr, son of the editor of the Her»ld, is thought to be dying. Great difficulty is experienced in obtaining nurses. Arrest of a Mall Robber. li ASEISBuao, August 10.—Henry Giant, a band on board tho packet boat Dauphin, running from the junction of the Jan ata and Susquehanna Canal to Milton, was ar rested to-day by Mr. A. Hughes, the special agent of the Poet Office Department, for robbing the mail on said boat. Giant was fully committed in default of ball in tbs sum of $2OOO to answer the charge. Mr. Hughes discovered some thirty letters that hod been rilled by Giant. The Case of Passmore WilUamaon. Bii>FORP, Pa, August IC—The application of Passmore Williamson for a writ of habeas corpus came up today be fore the Supremo Court, and was argued by the Hon. Chas. Gilpin and Wm. M. Meredith. Their speechos occupied the Court three hours, and were most able arguments. All the Judges are present, and ore now engaged in consultation. The result of the application is not yet known.
