The Supreme Court, Bitting in Philadelphia, have granted n writ of error in the case of Dr. Stephen T. Beale, who some time ago wa9 oou vioted of rape upon the person of Mies Madge. Over 1300 troops woro at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., at the latest dates, destined for tho expe dition against the Indians of tho Plains. Ono steamboat load has already been sent up to Fort Leavenworth. The annual commencement of tbe Jefferson Medical cotlego in Philadelphia took place on Saturday, when tho degree of doctor of medi cine was conferred on 178. Altogether G 35 graduates have received this season this de gree from tbe University and Jefferson College. Dnring the eleven months ending with Feb ruary of the present year, there were in Cincin oinnatl 80 fires, which destroyed property to the aggregate value of $117,101, on wbiob there wa3 an aggregate of insurance amounting to $81,571 thua showing an excess of $35,590 over insurance. It appears Mr. Hackett’s Grisi and Mario speculation was not a failure in a pecuniary point of view. According to the Journal of Commerce, which speaks by authority," they gave sikty-six performances in this country, -of which forty-three were in Now York, seventeen in Boßton, foar in Philadelphia, one (conoert) in Baltimore, and ono in aggre gate receipts were $193,000 and 'a fraotion, of which tho expenses fell short rather moro than $22,000. From this last sum deduct four thou sand dollars to oover expenses incurred pending the negotiation and previous to the oloßing of the contract, and'there remains eighteen thou sand dollars as the net profile of tho enterprise.” THE ORGANISTS AGAIN. The Union of yesterday contains what might be fairly considered a fall admission (hat it is worsted in tho contest with tho Post It threat ens a resort to arms, and bruto force. " Can ye tonoh pitch, and not bo de filed?” We are seneiblo of the truth of this query, but were forced to dirty our hands for onoe with a grasping crew of scamps, who, by din{ of much falsehood and importunity, have succeeded in gaining tbe confidence of a few abroad; bat, at home, are fast becoming well understood, and despised by a very largo portion of the'fcojnmunity. The timeiapast when subor dinate offioial position can confer respectability; or the bally be considered a gentleman. Offices fall into suoh strange hands of late that the peo ple have discovered that an office holder may o' easily torn out a rogac, or a 11 small potato - and they will judgo him by his oonduot, and not ’Sy'hiß titles. In tho midst of this growing sen timent of popular independence and freedom, the “organists” undertake to draw the reins of official and insolent oontrol more tightly than ever; and even to forbid to the press tho old fashioned privilege of announcing the appoint ments to office. It will be remembered that it was onr mention, in the ordinary way, of the ap pointment of Mr. M'Calmont to office, and then enumerating the offices he held, that gave rise to this controversy, which they now threaten to end by b|uto force. Wo would einoerely caution tbemngainst suoh an attempt. THE LAST AttGWMEJS'TOIF RUFFIANS ’ of the “gratters” connect edTinth the Union yesterday exhibits ono of the meanest phases of human nature. They com mence a furious assault upon an editor of the Pott through their coldmns, calling us by name. We conclude that we have endured their abuse long enough, and reply in earnest, having a con stant reforence to faots as oar justification. They reply with all the bitterness and ability their several editors oan command. They malign us to the utmost, and, one would suppose, to their heart’s content. - Eaoh article of ours is p reply o one of theirs ; yet, at the end of ten days, we ■_ nttohfese baffled libellers threatening a resort to . he last argument of ruffians—brute force, and breach of the peace. Now, in our estimatibn, there is a meanness and a cowardliness about suoh an impotent conclusion of a blnstering editorial onslaugh, that should brand any man with infamy. -Theysoleot their own weapon— the pen; enter the lists, and throw down the gauntlet. Mt is taken up. In a few days after wards, we find them fairly bellowing with rage, and menaoing an appeal to brute force. They pursued the same course towards the editor of another paper not long ago, and the bully of the establishment actually made an assault upon him, making it, however, in the midst of people whonijje knew would interfere bofore his brains were blown out. We warn them against similar ruffianism towards ns. Our press can never be silenced by such threats, nor any other feelings be excitedib us by them bot those of profound disgust and contempt. . We hope our next foes will be more manly, and better able to do battle with their pens. None but ':a coward will threaten an assault Bud battery without coining right along to com mit the same. Tho low rates of Freight by this route, tho speed of transporta tion, and tbe correctness and accuracy with whioh the business is doue, should mako this a favorite route for trade between the East and West* The canal will doubtless do a large busi ness this season. APRIL 4 The season of frost and ice, of stringency and panio, of dallaces and despondency, we trust, has passed away. Tho channels of business are opened, confidence restored, and renewed life and vigor are beginning to pervade all branches of trade and business. All our citizens can re- joice at the evidences of returning prosperity. One of tbe sources of the prosperity of our city is a large and active business on the canal; and we are glad to learn that that business has now commenced with good prospects. Newspaper Change. —We observe by a recent issue of the Sandusky Commercial Register, that Henry D. Cooke, Esq , has withdrawn from ao tivc duty in tho management of its editorial col umns—a position which ho has filled for several years past with great credit to himself and sat isfaction to the patrons of that journal. The editorial colomoa will in future be under the control of Messrs. Earl Bill, and Orville J. Yio tor, the latter gentleman having recently taken an Interest in the establishment. Mr. BUI is a perfect Gradgrind in the way of “facts” and “ figures,” and has tho reputation of having made the Register the best commercial paper in Northern Ohio. Mr. Victor is a mau of fine literary attainments, a foroible writer, and has, for more than two years, made the looal oolumn the most readable of its kind of any on our ex change list. We are glad to know the peoplo of Ohio have appreciated his labors so well. THE* ANTI-LICENSU BIL.L. This bill is now pending in tho Senate. Sev eral amendments have been proposed, altering some of tho features of the bill. But the gene ral effect remains. It Is designed to prevent en tirely the sale of intoxicating liquors in this State in less quantity than a quart. The Harrisburg Union says it is a prohibitory liquor law in disguise, aod adds: “Wo have not tho slightest doubt but this bill will be passed by the Legislature, and less doubt of the action of the Executive. The fact is it will became a law, and those men who are engaged in the liquor business may as well make up their minds to this result.” pw* The editor of the Young American will insist that wo are “crowing over him.” We as sare him ho is mistaken. lie has a right to prosper if he can, and it is not in our nature to wish ill to our neighbors, or be jealous of their rivalry. “Live and let live,” is our mo'to; and we would not adopt and practice any other if we could. About 30 years ago, Mr. A Rogers, of Frank liD, Ohio, was bitten by a mad dog and was pla ced in utter darkness, under medical treatment, for the space of thirty days, and apparently re covered from the effects of tbo bite ; though at irregular intervals sinco that time, he has felt unpleasant and peculiar sensations, supposed to bo caused by the virus, which in an almost in significant degree, remained in the system. Oth erwise he enjoyed remarkably good health, and be ing a man of powerful physical frame, weighing near 200 pounds, it is probablajhat the strength of his constitution kept the effects of the virus in his sygtom subdued. It was son the 15th day of laßt Janary that'ho received tbe last bite, un der the following circumstances : A small half starved dog bad been about the house duriDg the day, and Mr. It. told one of the children to call it in and feed it, whioh was done. MK R. stooped down to caress it when it bit him in tbo hand. Ho instantly grasped bis hand, and remarkod to his wife that he nev er felt such a pain. It seemed to thrill his sys tem like an olectrio shock. Nothing farther, however, occurred at that time beyond a very severe headacho and a slight nervous fever. The same dog was known to have bitten Beveral hogs; bat not until tbo hogs became rabid, whioh was several weeks after, was the dog supposed to have been mad. When Mr. Rodgers became ac quainted with these facts he at once felt that under his peculiar situation, with the virnß of a former bite in his system, his oaee was a hope less one,'and immediately set about olosing up bis business, and made his will, communicating I his apprehensions to no person, not even his ■family. He enjoyed usual health up to Wednes day before bis death, when the Bymptoms of hydrophobia began to manifest themselves, caus ing him, however,-no serious inconvenience un til Friday morning/when on attempting to wash his hands and face he found himself unable to get his hands into the water. He ato but little breakfaet.and in a’short time went to bed. About 12 o’clock on Friday night he was seized with a most fearful spasm,' which lasted for some time. Xbejaat spasm seemed to I rack the eufftrcr with the most .excruciating agony, and wa9 dreadful io the extreme even to witness. During all his sufferings, to the very moment of his death, be was conscious of bis condition, perfectly rational in all respects, and seemed to take particular care to barm no one during hie raving fits, although be was in no way secured, and in the same room with bis friends and attendants. It is certainly contrary to the usual experience that the virus should remain so long in the sys tem and giva no more decided manifestations of Us presence. Dot the case, though a remarka ble one is by no means an isolated one. LIST ILLNESS OP NICHOLAS. THE DEATH SOEjNTE. The Berlin official Staats AnzHgtr oontains.thc following details relative to the illness and death of the late Emperor Nicholas, which have beeu communicated to It from authentic or rather offi cial sources, and dated St. Petersburg, March 3. 1855: “ His Majesty, as it now appears, had long been suffering from an attack of ‘grippe.’ As early as the 18th of February, (N. 5.,) the body physician, Dr. Mandt, requested permission to oall in other physicians. The Emperor consent ed, smiling and joking the while on Dr. Carell being admitted. The Emperor’s condition be came( slowly aggravated through insomnia and increased oough, with much expectoration, so that the pbysioians entreated his Majesty not to quit his apartments on the 2‘2d. But the Empe ror would hear of no suoh thing; whereupon one of the physicians said, * Were any soldier as ill as is your Majesty, tbero iB not a doctor in tho whole army that woold allow him to quit the hospital, as ho must know that the patient would return in a worse state.’ The Emperor answer ed, * Gentlemen, you have done your duty—l thank you; and now I will fulfill mine.’ Having said this, he mounted his sledge, although the weather was rather cold, (15° Reaumur, or 34° below freezing point, Fabrv.uheit,) and drove to the ExcrcißO House of tho Guards, to inspect some infantry which were about to march in order to complete the regiments io Lithuania. “The Emperor, who oppoared for the last time on tbia occasion, was evidently much in. commoded by this visit. lie coughed violently, expectorated greatly, and said, as ho came away, ‘ I am comp'etely bathed with perspiration,’ al though it was anything hut warm in the exercise house. [At St. Petersburg and Berlin, long, lofty, and spacious buildiDgs are erected, where a greater or lessor number of troops can be drill ed and go through given mar ccuvres during bad weather, and at any season ] Io this state his Majesty drove to tho abode of the sick War Minister, (Princo Dolgorouki,) warned him not to go out too soon, and returned to the Winter Palace. Io the evening be attended the first prayers of Lent week, and then passed the rest of tho evening with tho Empress, but complained of cold, and retained his cloak on whilst in the apartment. From that day his Majesty did not quit bia extremely small working cabinet. There, on the 23d, as be lay on the sofa, covered with his cloak, he roceived Colontl and Aide-de Comp Von Tettenborn, and dispatched him toßobasto pol. After that hie Majesty made over business to tho heir to the throne. “ From the 24th to the 27th no other answers were returned to inquiries but, • Tho Emperor does not quit his bed, as he has fever ; bis cough is worse and so forth. Daring his whole Ill ness bis Majesty Uy upon hie Camp bed—that U, on a morocco leather sack, filled with hay, and a pillow of tho enme, covered with a blanket aod his cloak. “ It was oo tbo 28th that the malady assumed a decidedly serious character. On the night of that day, to the let of March, ho became rapidly worse. The physicians apprehended paralysis of tho hmgH. On the evening of tho Ist his Majesty was given up. The Eroprca and heir to ‘he throne entreated him to take tbo 6icrAmeots. It was at this moment that the Emperor first ap peared to comprehend the imminent danger of his condition ; but scarcely any emotion was re marked in bim. Doring he night of the Ist to the 2d March, Dr. Mandt communicated to the Emperor that he was dangerously ill; that hia lunge were strongly affected, and that much was to be apprehended. Tho Emperor replied quite tranquilly, * So, there is danger of paralysis of the lungs V * That ia possible. Sire,’ replied the., phyeidan. Thereupon the Emperor received tbo sacraments with great tranquility and firm ness, took leave of the Ecapresa and of the im perial children and grandchildren, and biased and kissed each individually, pronounced at the Bime time the benediction, and then only retain ed with him the Empress and the heir to tho throne. This occurred about 4A. M. on the 2d. A little later his Majesty said to the Emprcf-s, ‘ Go and repose a while, 1 entreat theeto which she replied, ‘Let mo remain with tbeo. I would fain depart with thee were it possible.’ The Em peror then said, ‘No! Thou must remain here, below. Tako care of tby health, eo that tbou mayst be a point of concentration for the whole family.’—[This expression contains an evident allusion to the apprehensions said to have long existed in the Emperor's mind that lees harmony existed between the members of bis family than was desirable. Indeed, it ia no eeorct that these apprehensions had repeatedly caused him and the Empress groat uneasiness.—*l will havo thee called when tbo moment approaches.’ Tho Empress obeyed this distinctly uttered command and quitted the room. “ The Emperor then directed Counts Orloff and Adlerberg and Prince Dolgoroski to enter, thank ed them for thoir fidelity, and took leave of them. Bomowhat later the Emperor directed .his special domestics to enter, complimented them for their good services, .and Messed and took leave of them, whereatho himself appoared greatly affected. Finally,’Madame do Bobrbeok,, bedchamber womao, was sent for, and his Ma jesty thanked her for tho fidelity ebo had eo con stantly shown to the Empress, and for tho soli - oitude with which she bad always attended her, and especially in her Majesty's recent illness! Ho prayed her not to leave the Empress ; and finally added, 4 Remember me to my dear [palace] Peterhof.’ The Emperor also took Dr. Uarell’s hand, and said, ‘ It is not your fault.’ “ As the Father Confessor Baynotf epoko with the'Emperor, he took tho hand of the Empress and laid it in that of the former, as if ho inten ded to confide the Empress to tho care of tho priest. After all this, the Emperor’s voioe fail ed him a while, daring which he frequently orossed himself and. prayed iuwardly.
