Capt.. Sargent, of the Rovers, re sponded in a vary neat and approi riate manner, and concluded by saying that as his company was comparatively a new organization; and net thoroughly conversant with the tactics of war, especially the proper mode of retreating, he hoped they would not be thought the worse of if they now surrendered at discretion and gave themselves into the hands of the Greye. After the singing of a patriotic ballad by Mr. Richard • Turner, of the Guards, the companies then again formed into line, and conveyed the Revere to their quarters at the St. Charles, which had been prepared beforehand for the purpose. Here, Mayor Vole, in a short address, which was re plied to by Captain Sargent, tendered them the hospitalities of the city. • The Guards are s fine looking set of men, and Asir soldier-like appearance, while parading through the streets, was universally admired. They number about fifty men, rank and file, ex clusive of the music, of which they have two bands. If the weather permits to-day, we believe it is the intention of the company, in connection with our own volunteers, to Parade in full dress uniform. In the evening, a grand complimenta ry supper will be tendered to them, at the St. Charles Hotel, which we have no doubt will be a splendid affair. Now WORK ON THS Hazza—Dr. Samuel San ders, (of Sixth street,) the "Prince of Barbers," is about completing a book written by himself, and on which he has devoted nearly his entire attention for a long time past. We have read the work, and in our opinion, which is sublime elated by several eminent physicians of our City, (who have read Sam's manuscript,) taken all together, it is a crcditable production, and folly sustains and proves the writer's practical knowl edge of the subject, which he treats in a mas terly style; and contains many new and inter ostiog hints for treating the scalp and keeping the hair in healthy action. The work will be read with interest by the public, and when read the method laid down must eventually become popular, and will always be highly valued by all persons having diseased heads. It will be ready for the press shortly, when the public will have a chance of judging of its merits themselves. COURT or QUART= 1313510S8.—Before Hon. - William B. M'Clure, President Judge; Gabriel Adams and William Boggs, Associate Judges. This Court convened yesterday morning at 10 o•elock. The Grand Jury were organized, and the usual charge made by Judge M'Clure ; but its length prevents its publication in our col- Commonwealth vs. James 8. Negley. Indict ment, forgery, and obtaining money under false -pretences. This case was continued from the last term. The defendant wee formerly a mem ber of the firm of Negley, Mohan & Co., and is charged with making use of the name of the firm to procure money after he had withdrawn from the partnership. On trial. HOZBIBLS AocinEwr.—On Christmas day, as three children of William McKee, living in Churcl alley, near Sixth street. were amusing themselves in a room of their parents' house, by manufacturing squibs of gunpowder, they were all burnt in the most horrible manner, by the ac oidental explosion of the powder. The neigh bors, hearing their cries for assistance, buret open the door, and found the children all in flames, with their faces and bodies frightfully mutilated by the explosion. The fire was quick ly put out, and all due attention given to the on .fortunate children ; but finch are the serious na. tare of their difficulties, that we understand but alight hopes of their recovery is entertained. Atturr OF BOBOLAILL—Two men, named Jas. Dickson and William Martin, were arrested by the police of Allegheny, on Saturday last, and committed to jail, on suspicion of being con cerned in the recent robbery of the dwelling and .shoe store of P. Mertz, in Allegheny, an se vitount of which we published at the time of its •occurrence. Several•of the articles stolen, be sides a variety of other articles supposed to have been dishonestly acquired, were found in their possession. A third party, named Wm: Graham, was also arrested, on suspicion of being con ,cerned in the same burglary, bat was afterwards discharged, for want of sufficient evidence. Acumen's ON CHRISTMAS. —A man named Smith, a grocer in Lawrenceville, had a portion of his lip shot off by the accidental explosion of s pistol in the hands of a friend. John Barns, living on Pennsylvania Avenue, while loading a pistol, over the muzzle of which his hand was carelessly placed, had a thumb blown off by the accidental discharge of the weapon. Straciumus.—The house of Rev. Dr. Riddle was entered by burglare, on Saturday, and rob bed of various articles of jeirelry, of no great value. The office attached to Curling & Boberteon'a glass house was also entered on the samo. night, and $6 in change and various small articles iaken. The robbers attempted to blow open the safe with gunpowder, - but did not succeed. Itistrrr TO W. L Vssostatrs.—lt will be seen by a card in another column that a benefit is pro posed to W. She is now ready to leave, and offers a tine opportunity to thaw wishing to travel South. The following items are taken from the Cincinnati ['am. menial, of Monday It rained steadily during Saturday night, and the muse q uence is a rise of several inches In the river at this point. The weather was mild and cloudy last evening, with indi cations of more rain. The wind, however, had shifted around, and was from the south-went. Boats from above and below, and passengers by the cars, report a general rain in all direction., so that the indications are favorable for a swell of two or three feet at least, which will, probably, let out the larger class of New Orleans boats, which have teen water-hound to long. Mr. Taylor, the clerk of the steamer Scioto, from Ports mouth, says that the attempt to raise the awaken steamer La Belle, at Broth Creek, proved fruitless, and that Captain of the Bell Boat, has made arrangements to wreck her.
