Mr. Fish, and.ifterwards by Senator Seward, he told Mr. Briggs so,. and that having ,decrided not to entertain the proposition, he would notthen con sider it. Wrrren that he had nev er felt the least resentment towards Briggs, and that be might tell him so if be chose. Being at the Capitol the next, day, on busintiss of his depart ment , . and meeting Mr. Briggs in ono of the passages, Mr. Hubbard at once exten ded his right hand with his ordinary salutation, ~ How arc you, Briggs?" After shaking hands ' with apparent cordiality, Mr. Briggs passed along. Afterwards, being in the rotunda and seeing Mr. Briggs approach him, rind having no doubt after what had just occu;ved that he ap . preached with kind 'intentions. You have itundted me, sir, and are no gentleman, and it there was any thing more that I could say to insult you .1 would say it., To this declaration, Hubbard replied that he did not regard his opinion and indeed cared no thing for it. At this moment, and without farther provoca tion, Briggs dropped the hand which he had held to this time, and, with his fist, struck Hubbard with full force and with great violence in the face—saying, I have now given you the blow, re sent it. Hubbard very'cooly remarked that be should not resent it, and - should engage in no fight with him, for that his conduct in this mat ter had been such as to place hini beneath his contempt.
