The town of Herringhausen, not a hun dred miles from Frankfort, is one of (he most picturesquely antique in Germany, and contains about 12,000 inhabitants'.— I like to prepare my- readers with a toler able idea of the locality wherein the events narrated transpire—for then I may hope to impress them with at least a two fold sympathy in my dramatic persona;. The street in which Herr Bomgarten had liis residence, was among the oldest in the town aforesaid, and his residence the old est in it. He was himself, also, a high dried piece of antiquity^usually enveloped in a cloud of smoke, from sunrise till sunset, except only when his fairdaughter sat beside him nt their evening meal, and talked.over the affairs of the day. On such occasions he would narrate incidents, in his progress through life, and dwell upon acquiring the independence which they then enjoyed. He had one passion in excess—an intense love of music; and had at one time been no mean proficient on the violin. At the festivals held periodically in all the prin cipal towns in Germany, his judgment was appealed to; and, indeed, no meeting of the kind was considered complete, if he, by any chance, wns absent/ It may, there-1 fore, naturally be inferred that his daugh ter had early been instructed in the eie mqnts of the art ; and at nineteen she was a pianist of considerable attainments.— These circumstances formed the basis of a desire .which became stronger tyith its years, and which confirmed a resolve that she should wed.one of the most accom plished musicians of the age. They say that when all other passions die, ambition survives, and acquires a force proportion ed to its solitariness and singleness of aim Certainly it is, that out of the many sui tors whoni the beauty or gentleness and the disposition of Azalia attracted to the - domicil of Herr Bumgarlen, not' one (so scrupulous was he on the score of musical perfection) was permitted by him to con tinue: his visits. Anxiety for the fulfil ment of a hope being usually in proportion toils strength, her sire, os the young Indy approached twenty-one, began to experi ence a dread that lie. might not see her settled. This : preyed upon his spirits deeply, and urged him to publish, as widely as possible, his. intentions. To that end he invited to his house, on a certain day; all of the class musical, who choose toepm pete for his daughter, declaring that at. midnight he would decide on the claims of the aspi rants. Now it is necessary I should inform my readers that iu thegrand apart ment of Herr Bomgnrten’s mansion there was a piece of furniture supposed to have boon fabricated by a Hungarian magician, and whiejh exhibited so much of apparent wilfutne'ss that it had been denominated by common consent, the Devil’s Clock. This time keeping edifice struck all manner of hours in all manner of ways; but whatever might be its vagaries, wa3 always true to the solemn “twelve” at midnight; so that Herr Bomgarten, not without reason, fixed upon that hour to decide his long cherished scheme. The - day at length arrived, and it may be imagined that not a little preparation had been made.. The piano forte, (one of Ivorner’s latest improvements) was placed under a mirror of immense size, and ex actly, opposite to the (fatal) clock. Azalia ; was dressed in a holliday suit, and lovelier than usual, and, from the cir cumstances, her father augured a pros perous finale. At about 8 o’clock in the evening, the suitors were assembled; and the players who ventured to offer them selves as competitors • for so beautiful and: sn rich a prize, were four in number.— They severally sat down to the instru ment, and each appeared, more than his predecessor, to astonish the audience;'and l it was generally imagined, that the last performer would be entitled to become the fair girl’s husband. But ere Herr Bom gurten had quite resolved in his own mind the exact meritsof each candidate, another stood beside the instrument, and rather by signs than words, indicated that he; too: must try his skill. The guests seemed extremely puzzled at this singular appnriliou; for up to that moment the gentleman had not been ob served in the room at all 1 Uno or ' two persons, indeed, declared that he had aclu ally stepped from the clock-case ns the last player of the four concluded his fantasia 1 Be as it may, he sat down to the piano and produced—-but it is wholly impossible: to describe the sensation. He now withered up the heart with the intensity of his pa thos; and again enchanted the soul with multitudinous images of delight.: 'Then would he pouroverthe imagination astorm of harmonies that exalted it almost to fren - zy; and, anon, subdued it to the placidity of childhood. He was the man; yet. who was he ? The question was a fenrfu I one. He was handsome-—his aspect was singu larly Wild and melancholy. Ho executed with marvellous ease, but his mind ap peared (judging from his eyes) to be wan dering over fields of thought remote from that in which ho wns engaged. He rose. Herr Bomgarten sprang from his sent, and would have embraced him, but was repelled by his peculiarity of mien. As to the pret ty she woreno expression save only that of extreme palor, and of internal agi tation ; but when the stranger, os the clock struck “twelve,” touched her hand to de*t part,-she rose at once, and without appa rent reluctance.' The .most surprising part of the whole business' was ‘ this, that the stranger, holding the hand of the yoimg lady, proceeded ’at once to the Deyil’a Clock, and giving one-melancholy glaujca: at the. company; touched-a spring and re tired within Its case. %-* * * * 1 , '/K- •■■: •• j ; ■•:■:,-J, a*:: *■--.■?■'/, **-. ■■'!:-:■?■ '■■;<■■ **■■. •i.-r-;-. On quitting La Mure, the Emperoreom posed his vanguard of one hundred picked men from that chosen body always-under the orders of Cambronne. ‘ This general, on advancing towards La Mure, found him self in front of a new battalion. The Emperor being ■■ informed of this, again dispatched Major 7 Raoul, to attack the battalion'which re* fused to open his route, but Raoul, threat-. encd with their fire, returned without be ing heard. ' Napoleon had felt that the mo ment had arrived to put to to the test his own ascendancy oyer his own soldiers. He prssed through his column ordering" it to - halt, and rode forward at a gentle pace, al most alone, in advance of his army. *■ * Whether lie had been assured by-hisaccom plices at Grenoble that the hearts of the battalion beat in his favor; whether the habits of a soldier on the battle field had inured him to look on death with less re pugnance by the tire than by the sword; his soul, since his departure from lilha, had concentrated all its powers in an ticipation ot this supreme moment, and that he had.deemed that his'enterpriae was.’weU' worth the risk of lire, certain it is that ho did not hesitate a moment. He neither hastened or slackened his steps, but op proached within a hundred paces of tho bayonets, which formed a wail before him on the road.
