A late rise in the mark - et price of 'United States Bank Stock has been'observed; and it has been stated that it was Owiliglo the anticipated im provement„in the property_of the bank at Cairo, upon the completion Of the Illinois Central Rail road. A private letter from Atupterdam proba bly gives the correct reason for the unusual ad vance in the stook. It says that the Dutch Stockholders are about to appoint a Committee in reference to the Bank, with instructions to - inquire into its condition, and adopt measures which may place them in a more favorable position than they now occupy. This movement, on being known at Amsterdam, created a lively demand for stock, which rose $1 above the previous quotations. Orders were immediately sent to New York and Philadelphia to buy the stock, and from this circumstance its advance in the American market is clearly to be traced. Of the special object in contemplation by the Amsterdam Committee, we are not in formed, but it has probably some reference to a reduction in the expenses of the Trustees, and a speedy winding up of the concern. We understand that the creditors of the firm in Market street, Philadelphia, which recently failed, have held a meeting, at which an exhibit was.made, which showed the assets, which were considered good, equivalent to 77} cents on the dollar. This is much better than was expected when the failure was announced. The firm of Wells & Co., in Boston, have sus pended payments, and made an assignment to Thomas L. Strong and. Horace P. Jones. Their liabilities `re $200,000. It is stated that they gave securities to the Attorney of the Boston house (Maser,. Wells & Co.) amounting to within $100;000 of the excess of the sum drawn by them. The New York Tribune says :—lt is under stood that Messrs. E. J. The regular business of the house, we understand, has been successful, but some outside operations of Mr. Bartow have proved embarrassing. Mr. Bartow had erected, at his individual expense, the "Holy Trinity Church" in Brooilyn, at a coat of $200,000, tak4 ing four years for its construction. The exterior has never been completed. Jim McCabe, I believe, returns home to-day. Capt. Meredith left the City yesterday for Stockton, Sonora and the Southern Mines. Should he escape the knife of the assassin, and the jaws of the Grizzly Bear, you may expect to hear a blast from his bugle blown from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you know the man, you must be aware that he keeps his own affairs to himself, and not being one of his conficientials, I am at a loss to know what new enterprise he has to embark in. His constitution being much impaired, I doubt very much whether he can stand hard mining, hard beds, and bard scrub, but go where he will, or do what he may, our best wishes will accom pany him. Previous to Meredith's departure, I was invit ed to dine at the " Bigler Ranch," which I ac cepted. This Rancho (as they call it,) was oc cupied by Capts. Irvin and Meredith and Ed. Smith, Esq. Being a little early, I had an op portunity of seeing each perform his part in preparing, our meal. The following was the "order of the ceremony :" Irvin went to the Butchers; Smith to the Baker, and Meredith for the water. Smith cut the wood ; Meredith kin dled the fire (and rinsed out the coffee-pot.)— Smith and Meredith prepared the table, while Irvin cooked the dinner. I can assure you it was the best I had ever eaten in the country.— After we had gotten through, Irvin and Mere dith cleared off the dishes, while Smith swept out the room. I watched to see who would wash the dishes, but had not the pleasure of see ing that interesting part of the ceremony per formed. This trio of hombria are hard to beat, and I am well convinced that a better-hearted, or a more kind, liberal or gentlemanly set of men cannot be found. There is, notwithstanding all this, a large number of Idlers and Rum-heads. Orem' is still on the American Eagle steamtir. He has been unwell for some time past, butts fast recovering. I will endeavor to get a steamer paper for yon. Yet I think Capt. M. has succeeded in arranging an exchange for the Pittsburgh papers. (Echo answers—where?) the committee layet in operation, crime increasing and the'press of this city trying to make the people believe that the villains have all vamoosed. And we see the Americans stepping forth at length, not to be our-antagonists, but to be Our brothers and allies. This new birth of Ameri ca to lively sympathy and interest in European politics, might have remained stillin an infan tine state growing, but yet dormant, but for the striking events which took place in. Hungry, so well calculated to captivate admiration, and give to polities : that invigoration of sentiment which they.so often want. - Heroes are rare, and so are statesmen before whom the masses, even of foreign and distant countries, bow. But Kossuth seems to be one - of these, and the great est result of the Hungarian struggle has been, perhaps, to create and develop such a man. His appearance and character has advanced, by perhaps half a century, the period when the United States. Were to fling the sword atidtridant into the European balance of power. This they have already done. The vote of Congress -in favor of Kossuth, the vessel sent to receive and take him to constitutional lands, the prepara tions for his personal reception, the enthusiasm of public opinion, necessarily embodied and ex pressed in the opinions of all those who have filled, or hope to fill, offices of importance in the United States ' all indicate that if, within the last century, Russia has sprung np like a colossus, to uphold the victoriously waving ban ner of despotism, and that with a consistency, a determination, and a power, which France and England, the natural antagonists of such a prin ciple, want the courage or the unity to combat, a new power ' equally colossal with Russia, equal ly ardent, luessprung up in another hemisphere, to raise the standard antagonistic to Russia, and zealous to cry "stop " to the aggresSive march of despotism. We will not deny that there are many circum stances connected with this great fact of the day, that one might have wished otherwise. It would have been more satisfactory, for example, had Great Britain alone, or Great Britain and France, sufficed to defend the nascent and progressive liberties of Europe for we are not certain that, the sword of America once fleshed in European strife, it may not be led astray by the errors of young ambition and a love of glory, as superior to that of justice. The fault, however, is thatof our own weakness to defend the cause of Euro pean liberty, and the readiness of our Anglo Saxon relatives to take it up. How much this new phasis alters all the great questions of Eu rppe—that of the Bosphorus and the Baltio--we need . not point out. To Louis Kossuth must be assigned the honor of having given birth to this combination, this alliance and understanding of all the members of the great Anglo Saxon race, on behalf of the old Saxon principle of self gov ernment; but to him also is due the credit of having perceived this great fact coming, of hav ing acted upon it, and directed his actions and his words to realize, to strengthen, and to es tablish it. Had Louis Kossuth, indeed, done nothing but this, he would be entitled to rank among those precious agente of the will of Prov idence who are destined to change the face of the world's policy, and give predominance to a principle that till then had to struggle for exist ence. Of the long prevailing sympathy of the Amer ican people for European liberty, as well as of their newborn determination to uphold it by something more than sympathy, there has come forward a most able 'and eloquent exponent, in the Hon. Mr. Walker. This American statesman is no juvenile, carried away by newly kindled zeal ; he is no exile, no oppressed foreigner, taking a necessary selfish or feeling view of the wrongs and the hopes of Hungary; or of the oppressed East. Mr. Walker is a veteran, whose political life has been passed in the debates of Congress, and amidst the figures of the Treasury, and the realities of official life. Becomes in his gray hairs and well earned renown, to support the cause of Kossuth, to denounce the tyranny of Russia, and to offer the right hand of Ameri can fellowship- to that large party of English liberals who are willing to undergo every risk for the maintenance and extension of constitu tional freedom. Mr. Walker drew a most vivid picture of Eng land, threatened by a coalition of European despots. All that is no visionary picture. It was very nearly realized by the elder Bourbons, before they fell. And the political events and changes in Europe are at this moment tending to a resuscitation of the same idea. But Mr. Walker did not leave the picture there, with England alone making head against the leagued despot ism of Europe- NO — portrayed also the armed and ardent young population of America, ready at a moment's warning. to fly to the succor of their old fatherland, as dear and glorious to their recollection as entwined with their interests.— We heard that gray haired American shadowing forth by his eloquence that noble picture of the alliance of two great and kindred nations ; and whilst his voice glowed with the eloquence of inspiration, it faltered, too, with the tenderness of affectionate and reverential feeling. Mr. Walker's was the most remarkable speech we have heard for-many years. Kossuth himself could not surpass it in depth of meaning or power of expression, and in that rare speech of political eloquence, which comprises all that is practical in the statesman, with all that is noble in the man of feeling and philosophy. This, indeed, was the character of the speeches made at the Southampton dinner ; and these speeches, in consequence, require to have been heard rather theft be read ; for no stenography can give an idea of the enthusiasm of feeling which inspired each orator, and which pervaded the audience. In truth, there was more of the fervor of a religions meeting in it than of the logic of a political one. Few of those present will forget the moment when Kossuth rose to kiss the hand of the Mayor, as that noble minded citizen spoke of all that he had-done, and all that he hoped in the present cause. Southampton has on this occasion nobly done its duty ; it takes foremost rank amongst us for ardent sup port of municipal and political liberty. And Europe, as well as England, will look to it as the first city in which was proclaimed the alliance of England and the United States for the mainte nance of constitutional liberty and national inde pendence all over the -world Late Eleav'y'papures. A letter from Oregon published in the ,Bap Register says " Forests, on the bottom lands, and moindains too, when not precipitous, are made up of an astonishing burthen of timber. Trees- -- Stand near each other ; the number on an acre is great. Large, very large trees, are freenent. 'Yet ;the great body of timber is of useful size, and a prettier ,:rove from which to select building tim ber, a carpenter cannot desire to enter: The trees aretall, straight, and 1613 hold their . ie , markably. - The keel of the steamer Lot Whit comb, is 160 feet long: The tree freitiWidch was hewn measured twenty-four by . .twenty seven inches in diameter atthe butt. Mr. Aber nethy, at Oak Point, sawed 101 feet in length of saw-logs from a fir tree, the butt measiiiin" g 33, inches, and the top 16 inches. As beautiful a trea_as I have seen, stands on claim of Judge Strong, at Cathlamet, a drawing of which was recently made for a London picto rial newspaper. It is.lo feet in diameter at the bottom and 230 feet high. But trees arefound that measure 300 feet as they-lay extended - on. the ground, and near the coast2oo feet in length of saw-logs have been taken from a tree on more. than one occasion. Fir and spruce run up,. spire like, farthest among the clouds, never throwing out any large lateral branches. The quantity of lumber Would, be inexhaustible, if felled only for lmuber purposes. , , - These timbers split freely. ; They : , are _split into roils and shingles, and hitt distaricatrom saw-mills, into siding for bonses. Such-weather boards are rove eight feet long, find half an bid, in thickness. At Pacific City I went out with a proprietor of a saw mill to see the manner of, felling_ spruce timber. With a large auger, a whole •is , . bored through the green standing tree, or two holes so bored as to meet within the white or sap part of the wood. Then a coal of fire is put into the hole. The draught of air sets it to burnittg, and in'from sixth twelve hours according to. thesize of the tree, it falls, with little or no more waste. of wo,d, than would be used by alltanltal.: it is then butted and cut up with the saw. Thus, 15 minutes with the anger does the work.of half or two-thirds of a day with an axe. Fir trees are not so felled for lumber. The white, (which is nearly the same as the balsam fir of the States) does not burn sufficiently well and the yellow and red burn too freely, and waste the timber. TILE PALLIUM.—An immense congregation at• tended yesterday morning at the Cathedral in this city, to witness the solemn investing of the Most Rev. Archbishop Kenriok with the Palm, at High Pontifical Mass. Large numbers were unable to gain admittance, and many I,uato. leave in consequence. The ceremonies. were grand and-ioapasints,wod-tho groat. ohnh. ♦ lho. Cathedral added its usual effects. The. Right Rev. Dr. Timon, Bishop of Buffalo, was the ce lebrant, and the very Rev. Mr. Sourin, admin istrator of the diocese of Philadelphia, preach ed on the occasion. The sermon, as peculiar thereto, was listened to with , great interest. The Archbishop, being now invested with.the Pallium, will enter fully upon the duties, of: his office. The Pallium is simply a little garment placed upon the neck of the Bishop, and'ex tending over the back and breast. It is made of white wool, with crosses inserted of black wool, both being of the natural color: It. is stated, that to procure the wool for this Pur , pose, lambs of these colors are constantly, kept at Rome, from which the staple is obtained; The Pallium is always buried with its possessor- The one just bestowed, if we are not mistaken' was brought to this country by a lady, to whim: the Pope entrusted its carriage.—Baltimore Stin Nov. li . air That Kossuth is not a revolutionary nor a vissionary democrat mustbe evident to all'but the wilfully blind. Kossuth did not iiroclaira. republic: he caused the dethronement of. - thtt house of Hapsburgh for continued wilful treaCh cry of the worst sort. Had Kossuth wished to overturn. the whole empire, he need but to have ordered the Hungarian army to march on Vienna after the defeat of JO erhich, and the slow pro cess of putrefaction which is now goingon would 'have been at once accomplished. His moderate views prevailed. The dynasty was not over.; thrown, and it is felt by many thatthe rancerous enmity displayed by the imperial family and their immediate friends towards Kossuth, is nur tured chiefly by the hateful idea that they owe the existence of their house to him.—Boston Post.
