"NEW YORK CIRCLE OF CORRESPONDENCE The latest humbug that has come forth from that centre of all httmbngs, New York, is the "Cirole . of Correspondence," of whioh a certain gentleman'-who bears the apostolic name of " J. St. John Stevens," is the Secretary. This "Cir, cle" - nndertakes the singular task of furnishing a gratyitaris correspondence for all papers at a distance, whose editors feel disposed to accept and regularly publish the same. The " Circle" aforesaid only reserve to themselves as an equiv alent, "the right to involve, occasionally, in a news paragraph, a kindly notice of a friend." The words we have italicized give a key at once to this "gratuitous" correspondence. The way this business is managed we presume is about as fol lows: Barnum, Genin, and other professional humbugs, wish to advertise themselves all over the country as cheaply as possible. They pay the "Circle" say $25 or $5O, and immediately three score or more of letters are written by means of a manifold letter writer, and despatched to distant newspapers for publication. Now there is a considerable amount of gossip in these lecters, and some of the recipients no doubt think they have been highly complimented in receiving them, and of course spread them before their readers with a considerable flourish of trumpets, headed with " New York Correspondents of the Evening Owl," &c., .64. c. We scarcely pick up a paper now-a-days, but that we find in it a New York Correspondence, well interlarded, of course, with "kindly notices of a friend," or in other words regular paid for pub " Within the last day or two we received - a letter from the " New York Circle of Correspondence," of the charne-... ter deserAed, with a very polite note from the apostolfe "Secretary" above alluded to, offering to become a reptlargratuitaue correspondent of the' Morning .F'ors! All the intelligOie vilitichiSpreSent ekkosinth as havingitimP;SMified their. S. flag,' as-having affronted Capt.-Long and dishonored the hospitality of the United States, is now shown to be a mere web of lies spun by that portion of the Press who are in the pay of Russia and Austria, for the sole purpose of stealing_ from Kossuth the hard-earned sympathy of the Amer ica People. The "New York Herald" sees'dan ,ger to.the.UnitedStateein.the fact that K.ossuth has determined upon visiting England, and does not prefer entombing himself in the American woods, and straightway has important despatch es written to it from Washington City by a pri vate eorresponclent, (Chevalier Httbremann himself most probably,) said despaiabes being entirely unknown to any, one' but said correspondent.— The latter states,- among other things, that "at Marseilles the ship was constantly surrounded by boats filled with the intensely excited popu lace, so that the officers had to make the great est exertions to prevent tumult and acts of vio lence. Capt. Long was, therefore, obliged to urge KossutiLnot to compromise the flag of the United States bflhe publication of manifestoes and the excitement of the people. But Kossuth paid.little attention to this request. Let any one compare - these pretended des patches with this fact stated by the French pa pers—that Capt. Long accompanied Gov. Kos suth in a boat, and unfolded the-11.S. flag over the bead of Kossuth to show the French under what protection the Hungarian stood—and then believe that Capt. Long has conducted himself towards the illustrious and unfortunate exile, in the manner asserted by the Herald! • Farther, is the U. 8. flag, indeed, dishonored, when thousands upon thousands of men in boats appear around a 11. S. frigate to testify to the American nation their sympathy for the liberation of Kossuth ? Or, are only the "most high and' mighty potentates" competent by honor's laws to make such demonstrational Not long ago, when a U. 8. frigate was lying in the harbor of Trieste, and was stared at by more than 10,000 gaping spectators, the Herald with true Ameri can pride and dignity of character, rejoiced and was exceedingly glad thereat, nor forgot to enu merate most carefully by name all the "high mightines.ses" who did "most graciously condes cend" to confer the distinguished honor of their notice upon the Republican vessel—:tut now when thousands of Republican., swarm around the frigate with expressions of gratitude and delight, it is insulted and snivels out "the U. S. flag is compromised !" Thus we see that =Tee ing and coquetting with the Reaction and the "lots of drink money" have turned the Herald's brain. Kossuth's holiest duty, (in Marseilles as pre viously at Nizza,) was not to deny himself and the cause of Democracy, but boldly to represent the latter and manfully to maintain it. Thedu ty of gratitude, his duty towards Hungary, the duty of the Propaganda, his duty towards his fellow-patriots and friends who were anxiously awaiting his arrival in England, unavoidably and imperatively demanded that he should visit that country and its great capital London. He could not and should not disappoint his comrades, at any price, for by so doing he would be giving up the game, and losing the best trump in his pack. After fulfilling a public duty to his noble aomrades, he could fitly devote, himself to tho more personal duty of visiting the United States and presenting to this great people his thanks for the interest they have shown in his glorious cease. But he cannot come here to be placed upon the shelf, as a pensioner, by the Reaction, for in that very act he would render himself un worthy of the sympathy of the U. S. citizens. He must return to the theatre of the Revolution for his political mission is not yet ended. But for this very reason is be 'vilified and abused by the Reaction as represented by the " N. Y,ller ald." Happily, a host of other papers IMve been honorable enough to make direct fentii against the pitiful course of the " Herald." Ham!)leton's Recipe, let Premium.—To every 100 pounds pork, take 8 pounds of G. A. salt, 2 ounces saltpetre, 2 pounds brown sugar, I ounces of potash, and 4 gallons of water Mix the above, and pour the brine over the meat, after It has laid in the tub some two days. Let the hams remain els weeks in brine, and then be dried several days before smoking. I have gen erally had the meat rubbed with fine salt when it is packed down. The meat should be perfectly eool before packing. Gknae'e recipe, 2nd premium—To 100 pounds pork, take half a bushel and half a peek of salt, 8 pounds saltpetre, 3 pounds sugar, and 2 qts. molasses. Mix—rub the bacon with it well ; keep on for three weeks in all; but at the end of days take out the hams, and put those which were at the top, at the bottom. 8. Brooke,jr.'s recipe, Sdpremium.—One bushel fine milt, half bushel ground alum salt, one and a half pounds saltpetre to the thousand pounds pork, left to lie in pickle four weeks, hung up and smoked with 'hickory wood until the rind becomes a dark brown. C. D. Slingluff's recipe, 4th premitica.—To 100 pounds green hams, take 8 pounds ground alum salt, 2 pounds brown sugar or molasses equiva lent, 2 ounces saltpetre, 2 ounces pearlash, 4 gallons water; dissolve well, skimming off the scum arising on the surface. Pack the hams compactly in a tight vessel or cask, rubbing the fleshy part with fine salt. In a day or two pour the above pickle over the meat, taking care to keep it covered with the pickle. in four or six weeks, according to the size and weight of the hams, (that is to say, the longer period for heavy hates) hang up to smoke, hook up, smoking with green hickory wood. I have put up hams for the last twelve or fifteen years by the above re cipe with uniform success, equal at all times to the sample now presented To the above we add the following, which we, as well as'many others, have very satisfactorily proved : For every one hundred pounds of meat, take five pints of good molasses, (or five pounds of brown sugar,) five ounces saltpetre, and eight pounds rook salt—add three gallons of water, and boil the ingredients over a gentle fire, skim ming off the froth or scum as it rises. Contin ue the boiling until the salt, &0., is dissolved. Have the hams nicely cut and trimmed, packed in eaaks with the shank end down, as the pickle will thus strike in better. When the pickle, prepared as above, is cooled to blood heat, pour it over the hams. They ma lie in pickle from two to aix weeks, according to the size of the pieces, or the state of the weather, more time being' required in cold, than in warm weather. Beef or mutton hams, intended' for smoking and drying, may be cured according to this mode, and will be found excellent. Much of the goodness of hams depends on smoking. They should be hung at such a dis tance from the fire, as not to be heated. They should also be hung up with the shank end downward, as this will prevent the escape of their juices by dropping. Small hams, wanted for immediate use, will answer with two weeks smoking, but larger ones, and those wanted for keeping, should be smoked four weeks or more. At a democratic mass meeting held at Wash ington City on the 22d ult., the following resole- . tion was unanimously adopted : "Resolved, That the only safeguard of the Union is to be found in principles of the demo cratic party, which require that the states shall faithfully observe the stipulations of the federal compact, which forbid the exercise of doubtful! powers by the federal government,, which forbid;, that congress shall interfere with slavery, oz harass the Union by discussions on matters of demestio state policy, thus insuring the perms , 'Loney of the Union by avoiding the sources of .danger." z eir In recent papers received from China, it is said that the British men of war Cleopatra and Lily fired,.at noon, on the last 4th of July, a salute of twenty-one guns each, with the " stars and stripes," at the fore, in honor of the anni versary of our nationalindependence. Whatever may be thought of the Bloomer cos tume, there is one evil; at least, which it reme dies :—we mean., the inconvenience of a long skirt, sweeping the ground in wet weather, and thus wetting the ankles. More females, perhaps, catch cold in this, than in any other way. Be sides, nothing is more unsightly than a wet, soil ed and draggled skirt of this description. We beard a lady, the other day, who considers the Bloomer costume indelicate, admit, nevertheless, its superiority for wet 'weather over the present fashion. She proposed, however, to reform the dress of her sex, not 'by shortening the skirts, but by introducing a light-made Wellington boot, something like the patent leather ones worn by gentlemen in evening costume. Such a boot would be water-tight, for the foot, and would preserve the ankle from being wetted by the skirt, A very flute - practice, our fhir friend, said, would mcuatom a, lady to this sort of a boot; while thousands of lives would be preserved in conse quence of the reform. 'The popular notion among females that a boot of this description must be necessarily clumsy, is entirely wrong. Boots, somewhat similar, are WOlll by the ladies of sev eral foreign oonatriee k and have, in many cases, quite a picturesque effect. It would be a posi tive reform,. And not `a mere whimsical change, if ladies wOuld abolish the train, and, in wintry or rainy we:Attu:, weir a light, coquettish boot, a la Wellington.—PhO. Bulletin. Three of these being frmoriginal Whig counties, and eleoted for threet:years, we can pretty safely calculate upon holditig the Senate, whatever political change may otherwitie happen, until 1865. So far as we are able 'to ascertain, we will have a Democratic majority of 28 in Assembly —an increase of 26 upon our majority of last session. It is scarcely necessary to say that this result far exceeds out most buoyant expec tations, and that it is just five dates better than we calculated. JAPANESE LITERAtORB.-A American man of war, cruising in the ;SsPanes° waters, pinked up the crew of a Japanese vessel that had been wrecked, from whota they obtained a copy of the alphabet of the country, a list of the names of the sailors, and a representation of the com pass need by them. The alphabet contains forty eight characters. The letters and names stand in perpendicular columns, and the order of read ing is to begin with the right hand column and read down—the reverse of our method. These discoveries prove that the Japanese are a people among whom learning has been cultivated ; and a hope is expressed that through the rescued seamen, a more successful attempt will be made to open a communication with that people. • PRBRATIIIIII.—During our absence last week, •an article was copied into this paper announcing its sale to WM.
