We have denied' the right of any branch of -business to ''demand prUtection at the hands of the gtremunentk. and that which cannot be demanded as a 172 . ghf, by . a*Mn a very large majority, cannot properly be granted by Congress, in the ordinary :course of legislation. But, in a country like ours, and espeo Tally under a government like ours, that which may not always be contended - frir on the score of right, may be expected, "sometimes, on the ground of concession to a large arid patriotic minority. The undeviating law of abstract right may very properly be waived, at times, for the salte-of the neighbor ; and consid erations of sound policy, looking to future ine vitable consequences, or even to strong proba bilities, often impertively demand the adoption of a course which, under other circumstances, might be altogether impolitic and unpatriotic. With these propositions as the basis of en article, we now propose to submit a few thoughts in -relation to the exciting subject on which a de cision has been so recently given, that will, we are sure,- meet with a response from almost every Democrat in the State. 'Dia too well known to need repetition, theta lutlieliiumber of the citizens of our State, and als; . of several other States of the Union, are now engaged in the manufacture of Iron ; and that many others have embarked in this business who, from one cause or another—perhaps from various causes—have been unable to continue isf-thiffatiineMtL4inking- - all the capital which' they had embarked in it. It is also well known that while our country abounds in iron ore, and all the other materials for the successful manu facture, of every description of Iron needed for t.ha - constunption of the country, immense quan tifies of this article are brought here, of a . qua lity, and at a price, so far below that which is Made, or, it would seem, can be made among us, that our manufacturers are driven out of the mar ket, except in the sale of certain articles, which purchasers have found can rarely be obtained of good quality if made of British Iron. There are few, if any,.who will question this fact, es pecially in relation to Railroad Iron, and that used for the manufacture of Steamboat and other boilers : and when it is known that, from the use - of an inferior because cheap article, great havoc of human life has been made, we are sure that a large majority of the people of this coun try will feel perfectly willing to sanction any constitutional plan that may be adopted by our general legislature. We are well aware that such a change in our tariff laws as would effect the objeet desired by the Iron Manufacturers, would also affect the revenues of the country to a considerable ex tent: but we have nothing to fear from even a very considerable reduction in the revenues from importations; because they are already so large, that the wisdoneof Congress may soon be invok ed, in relatioirto the best plan by which to make another distribution of the surplus; and we should greatly prefer the enactment of a law __that would reduce the revenues of the govern ment; (if it might , incidentally "benefit a large class of meritorious citizens,) to one proilding for a distribution of money among the States— with all the corrupting influences that must be exerted by it upon the whole community. There are, hoWever, other mothentous considerations, • Which we think may well,be included in an .article on this subject ; and some of these we • abaft tiVei'itt;inorrOw:' ' "' • Vutottrai ELECTION.—The returns of the Con '` n:salami election in this State indicate the election of thirteen democrats and two whigs— the same as in the last Congress. For these offices Robert McClelland and Calvin Brit min have been nominated by the Democrats. The !Masonic Hall In passing by this beautiful edifice, yesterday, we were induced to drop in, to see what was going on. Our first point of observation was the splendid Concert Room, on the second floor, which, we perceive, has been greatly im proved and beautified by the addition of two private rooms, which have been made, under the direction of the Architect, by our old friend Annum Parrott/Lan, who is an approved Master workman, and who, from his long and intimate acquaintance with his business, can perform any kind of work,—from the preparation of an elab orate design for a building to the most minute and delicate ornament required in its construc tion. In the hands of such workmen this ioag nificentHall hasbecome one of the finest in the country, and certainly the best in the State,— either for the , purposes of the ancient Craft, or for Concerts, Public Lectures, &c. Presidential Conventlon A. large number of the citizens of Massachu setts, who believe that the time has arrived when that State should give a strong, concentrated ex pression of opinion in favor of her distinguish ed Statesman, and fairly present his nameibe fore the people of the Union, have invited their fellow citizens who coincide with them, to meet in Convention at Faneuil Hall, Boston, on Tues day, the 26th :day of November next, for the purpose of adopting such measures as may best tend to produce that result. Virginia. - We have noit received full returns of the late Congressional election in Virginia; but we pre sume the-delegation will stand the same as last year, viz : 18 Democrats and 2 Whigs. The truth is, Whigzery appears to be at a very low ebb in every part of the United States! It would be well for the party to sell out and move over into Canada! ger The Ohio Statesman, in referring to the late election in that State, says that the Free Soil vote will be about 16,000; Gov. Wood's majority will be 26,000, or upwards; Judges Bartley and Corwin will lead ex-Judges Andrews and Story from 8,000 to 10,000 ; and Breslin (of the Seneca Advertiser) leads Bliss, for Au ditor of State, about 20,000. The others on the State Ticket are so far ahead of their Whig op ponents,' that their majorities cannot be counted ! This was surely "glory enough for one day!" ger Who shall be the presiding officers of our Legislature, is an inquiry that has been made in several quarters lately. The Senate will, most probably, choose Mr. Manniss, of Philadelphia, who was the last Speaker. Mr. Borrxuad, of Cumberland counq, has been spoken of for Speaker of the House ; and JonN-S. Baur, Esq. Madame Bishop'. Entertainment The approaching lyric entertainment of this far-famed cantatrice has already created a great deal of excitement, and will no doubt be orow4- ed. The Cleveland Herald, in speaking of her concert in that city says: Madame Bishop's Concert Last evening was well attended, and the grandest ever witnessed by a Cleveland audience. Those of us who have listened to the distinguished Swede, and heard Mad. Bishop at the Melodeon, now know why the trip of the latter has been a triumphal march for the past six months. The Scotch Ballads, and "Sweet Home," were perfect, as were the costume plays, and indeed. the whole performance. As a mere singer, we. think Mad. Bishop equal to Jenny Lind. She . does not possess Jenny's humble, childlike, re tiring demeanor, and therefore does not steal away the hearts of her audience, as does that peasant girl. She is vigorously framed, indepen dent and self-reliant in manner and look, which seems not to require either the affection or sym pathy of her audience, but asks them to criticise her merits, and let her music go forth for what it is worth. Every body wishes Jenny to sing well because they first love her, and they declare she does sing will, partly for the same reason. Distinguished Courtesy General Campbell the newly elected GoTernor of Tennessee, closes his Inaugural Address with the following handsome notice of Gen. Trous dale, his defeated competitort i " I regret, fellow-citizens, it was my for» tune to be brought into conflict upon the politi ical arena with my worthy competitor--espe• cially one so distinguished in the military histo: ry of our country, who by his gallant conduct in war has won distinction for himself, and shed honor upon the escutcheon of Tennessee, already bright with the deeds of our illustrious ohieci tains. I honor him, as I doubt not do the peo; ple of .our State, for his virtues an a.catizeo-anit • his gallantry as a soldier." Oar Madame Bishop is on her way to Pitts burgh; Jenny Lind is in Cincinnati; Madame Parodi is in Detroit; Catharine Hayes is in Hartford; and Miss Greenfield, " the black swan," is in Buffalo. Mr Buchanan In New York Mr. Buchanan was in New York, on business, last week, where he met with a warm and onthu elastic reception from the Democracy of the , city. The New York correspondent of the Penn sylvanian, under date of Wednesday, thus de scribes his visit: Among the distinguished strangers at present in town, is Hon. James Buchanan, of Pennsyl vania. The glorious result of the recent elec tion in your State—responding, as it did, to the noble Union victories won by the Nationalists in Georgia and Mississippi—is looked upon here as iikrio small degree owing to the name and the influence of this distinguished statesman. He meets with a warm welcome here—the forerun ner, it may be, of a "welcome" he is ere long to receive by the people, to the White House, at Washington. And the New York correspondent of the Phil adelphia Ledger, in reference to the same visit of Mr. 8., says— Among the recent arrivals in this city, [N. Y.) are Ex-Governor Marcy, of this State, Hon. James Buchanan, of Pennsylvania, and Hon. H. Hall, one of the U. S. Land Commissioners in California. Buchanan stock, redeemable in 1852, is a "favorite security," just now. George Washington's ancestors Lanes shire Men The first recorded ancestor of George Washing ton, the Commander in Chief and first President of the United States, was John Washington, of. Whitfield, or Whitefield, Lancashire, who lived? about the middle of the 16th century, and had' two sons; John, who inherited the patrimonial lands at Whitefield; and Robert, who settled at Wharton, in the same county, and married three, wives, by the first of whom he was the father of John Washington, Esq., of Wharton, who (mar rying Margaret, sister of Sir Thomas Kitson, alderman of London,) left a successor, Lawrence Waithington, Esq., of Grey's Inn, mayor of Northampton in 1532 and 1546, to whom Henry VIII granted the manor of Sulgrave, parcel of the dissolved priory of St. Andrew, near that town. Dying in 1684, he left two sons, Robert and Lawrence; the latter was knighted, and left a son Lawrence, whose only daughter and heir ess married Robert Shirley, Earl Ferree. Robert, the eldest son of Lawrence, the grantee of Sulgrave, had a large family; the eldest son, Lawrence, left four sons; Sir William, of Pack ington, who married Anne, half sister of Sir George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, by whom he had two sons, Henry and George. Henry was probably that Sir Henry Washington, renowned for the resolute and spirited manner in which he defended the city of Worcester for Charles I, against the Parliamentary forces under Fairfax, in 1816. The other three sons of the last named Lawrence were John, of South Cave, Yorkshire, who emigrated to America about 1641; Richard and Lawrence, who accompanied their brother John to the United States, where they purchased lands in Virginia, and became successful plant ers. John had two sons, Lawrence and John; the elder (Lawrence) had two sons, John and Augustine; and this Augustine had two eons, (Lawrence and Augustine) by his first wife, and four by his second wife; George, (the patriot and president) Samuel, John, Augustine and Charles. The president bore the arms of the Sulgraves, Northamptonshire.—Liverpool Chron icle. There are twenty4sight establishments in St. Louis for the manufacture of malt liquors. The other day a judicial inquiry • was instituted against those persons who had been seen there at the time referred to ;- but this affair, too, ter minated immediately in a ridiculous manner, for the waiter of the Hotel testified that the guests were in the habit of calling him by the nickname "Judge." Some days ago the news papers asserted that the King had assured a deputation from Potsdam that " he and his wife had no intention of becoming Catholics," as had been maliciously reported of them. What more is required ? After all the syste matic oppressions which have been exercised during the last two years, after the war of an nihilation that has been waged against the Press, the King feels himself so weak that he is obliged to shelter I)*elf by an open declaration from newspaper rumors. The Potsdam folks should have replied to him, for that matter, that he need, by no means, turn Catholic, for he has long been much more. Ills Protestant Jesuitism, as suf fficiently exhibited by himself, is far more de structive to the freedom of his people than ever the movements of the Catholic clergy could be; for the latter reserve liberty for themselves at least; while the Protestant priesthood abase I themselves as the utter slaves of the leading Ab solutists. But, in this wise, the people have only learned to detest their priesthood the more thoroughly. . Hence, in Prussia, aU enlightened thinkers yield to this conviction, that in the next Revolu tion, Monarchy must be done away with ; and only such a Revelation is to be brought about, as will bring with it the Republic. For this rea son, too, all minds are persuaded that all na tions of Europe must make common cause in the approaching. struggle, in order to obtain success, and to defend themselves from Russian barbarism. They look forward with longing to the year 1852; and await from the French the signal of the new Revolution. As in all earlier movements, to the latter belongs the initiative, for they have the greatest national strength, and the most favorable geographical position. It is to be hoped that they will obey this call of His tory. What course things will take in Germany until that time can be readily foreseen. Now that the imperial stripling of Austria has again declared himself absolute, the other Prin ces will bestir themselves to attain the same po sition, while they appeal to the Diet. The King of Prussia, too, will in this manner attempt to get rid of his Constitution. It was with this pre-determination that he in 1850, Jesuitically swore that he would reign according to it, " so long as circumstances should leave it possible." Therefore, should these circumstances prove con trim the Constitution can be altered. Such a revision will, undoubtedly, be demanded of the Chambers, as soon as they assemble in Novem ber. This much can, already, be deduced from the 'procedure of the Grand Dukes of Saxe Weimar and Oldenburgh, who have both declared to their assemblies that they would be dismissed if the Constitution were not altered. The people watch all these machinations with an icy scorn. They . behertbin the annihilation of their constitutions only the well-merited pun ishment of those coniititutionalists who, in 1848, imagined that they could once more effect a com promise between the, arbitrary will of Princes and the wishes of . the people. This compromise has become a mockery and a byword of disgrace, and now at length, the tables have been cleared between the two elements—they cannot exist to gether—but can only attack and oppose one an other. This is the great step in advance which has now been won—an universal insight into the great problem of popular supremacy—and therewith is the broad foundation laid at last, on which a real Revolution can be built. GALVANIC PRINTING PR E98.-MT. F. A. C. Foreman, an ingenious printer of New Boston, 111., has invented a printing press which is pro pelled by means of Galvantic magnets. Mr. F. has a model in operation, which is thus describ ed by one who has seen it : The impressions are throw off with the ra pidity of lightning. His paper works upon a reel, and is continuous, like a telegraphic coil. The paper is carried over the type on a cylin der, and when one side is worked, the paper is reversed, and the other printed with a most perfect register, and as they comefrom the press the sheets are clipped apart by an ingenious contrivance. The speed of this press is almost unlimited, and its exactness is beyond anything in this line of machinery. Mr. F. estimates the cost of the largest sized printing press at not more than five hundred dollars. MM=S!= ' • For the hlorptnt ?WU : , The Allegheny Valley Itaili•Oad..,-, EMCEE Having in two former communications briefly considered the importance,of the proposed Road to the-wide regions and thriving cities, South of the line of the State of New York, we tarn for, a brief space to consider its advantages and prospects Northeast of that line. But a few miles north of that line runs the Erie Railroad, the most costly and Magnificent work of the kind in this Country, and the long est Railroad in the world. It has been built at an expense of over twenty-fonr million dollars; with a wide track of great strength ; and cape hlo of bearing vast burdens at a rate of speed unsurpassed on any Road. To make such a Road profitable, the travel and trade from as many sources as possible must be drawn to it to swell its revenues. And it is believed that no "'feeder" of this great Road would so much en hance its earningssethis Valley Road. It would pour upon it 'annually millions of tons of the :-bituminouscotiViumber and iron of Northwest ern Pennsylvania, for the New York and other markets: and-draw to it .a large portion of the Southwestern-commerce with Central New York and the Empire City. The Erie Railroad Company, then, has an in terests in this .project .that insrures aid from - it towards the construction of this Valley !Wad. And Rocheeter,,already a large and thriving city, situated .near the Southern shore of Like Ontario, bylier position; when this Road is built, ban command - is large- and valuable trade with Western and ltorthern New York and the Cana das. She has ; direct Rail, road cenimunication with Albany, Beaten., and other Eastern oities. A large share of the• travel and trade between the Southwest and Northeast, must pass over this Road, and Rochester, at its terminus, will be a main point-of its trans-shipment, distribu • Lion and exchange. But Rochester is fully awake to its interests in this Road, and, in its corporate capacity has already proffered.half a million dollars towards its cost.; and-deittless her citizens will do as much more. If is believed that Rochester and the rich Genesee Valley will contribute sufficient to complete the, Road from Rochester to the P.ennsylvtuaia line. From what sources, then, shall be drawn the means of completing this Road from this line to Pittsburgh? Pittsburgh and its vicinity, whose commerce and manufactures it would double in value : The Allegheny and Clarion region, whose popu laden and wealth it would sevenfold increase;— The Southwestern cities' to wboait , would open the shortest route to the Northeast: and capi talists generally, who, it is believed, can find no investment more safe and profitable. Such are some of the sources from which ample means can doubtless be drawn. But New York and Boston have an interest in this matter sufficient to justify a heavy draft in its aid upon their abounding wealth. Access to the lumber, coal and iron of Northwestern Penn sylvania, is an object of great importance to those cities. This they obtain by this Valley Road. It gives them also direct communication with the head waters of the Ohio ; and a direct, and even open route to the whole Southwestern country. Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore are each stretching forward their iron arms, in eager and splendid competition, to grasp the golden prize of Western commerce. Nor need either rival be jealous of the others. The com merce of the Mighty Valley of the West will abundantly repay the utmost efforts, and realize the utmost wishes, of them all. Let New York and Boston reach Pittsburgh by this Valley Road, and they meet Philadelphia, here, not as rivals, but as allies in pushing for ward the Central Road to the MissiSeippi River; and, in time, even to the shores pf the Pacific.
