WM. PORTER. This truly estimable and much respected gen tlenian, breathed his list yesterday morning, at one o'clock, at his residence near Mineraville. - He died in the bosom of his family, and cheered by all the consolations which religion and a life well and usefully spent, canbestow. His death came not unexpectedly to his family and Mends; they were, in a measure, prepared for the sad event, by a long and. afflicting illness of five weeks. Of the deceased it may truly be said, that he was the architect of his own fortune. lie was born in Ireland, and came to Pittsburgh at twelve years of age, from which time to the present he has continued to reside amongst us, rand to contribute by his integrity, energy, and usefulness to the prosperity of the city. He filled many posts of trtust and responsibil ity, and was engaged in many enterprises of ac tive usefulness, in all of which he maintained a character for probity and honesty, undimmed by imputations of• any nature. , • Tenth Judicial District. Jima-luau ISI. Ben nu, as the Democratic candidate for President Judge of the District. " 4 !honest; capable, and faithful to the Constitu tion," and also faithful in the discharge of all his social duties; we hope and expect to hear of his electicei by a triumphant majority. - • JULY 26, .1851 Barran° that the readersof the Post, at, home and abroad, feel an interest in everything that pertains to the progress ;and prosperity of the City of Pittsburgb, we have for some time past been engaged. in collecting antl.pnblishitag such facts in regard to her public improvements; busi ness operations and manufacturing establish ments, as we thought best calculated to develop the industry, wealth and resources of this great and flourishing community. In purshance of our determination, it few days ago we visited the celebrated "Novevry Worms," corner of Grant and Front streets, and through the politeness of Mr. L. B. LIVINGSTON, the senior proprietor, we were shown through the entire establishment, and carefully examined it in all its details and ramifications. We shall now proceed to notice these extensive and flotnishiftz Works. ' The NovEtar Wonss were established in 1838, • ♦ + -LIVIICOSTON• and CALVIN ADAMS, under the firm of L. R. LrmosToN & Co. The building originally used by the firm was but one story high, and was 24 feet In front by 80 in depth. In 1844, Mr. jous J. Bono EN was taken into the concern as a partner, and the firm chang ed to Ltvutosrox, Itonoes & Co. It Was now in the full tide of prosperity. But the following year, the ever-memorable fire of 1845, which re duced one-third of the city to a heap of smoul dering rains, also swept away the Novr.urr Worms in its devastating course. The indomitable Yan kee spirit of the proprietors, however, was not overcome. They went to work again, and in a short time, a new, building sprung up from the ruins, like the fabled Phenix from its ashes.— In 1819, our enterprising fellow-citizens Gen. J. K. 3looauxan and W. B. COPELAND purchased an interestinthe NOVELTY WORKS, but the old style of the firm still remained. The business of the establishment has increased so rapidly that new improvements and ndditions to the buildiughave from time to time been.found necessary. It is now three stories high, and is 80 feet in front by 260 feat in depth. The first department 'we . were taken through in the Kempf Wones was the wareroom on the first floor. , Here we found a vast number of Platform Scale", of various aim, capable of weighing from 800 to 6000 lbs. , Of these scales, the Works turn out on nn average about 35 per week. In this wareroom wo also found an end less variety of articles, packed up and ready for the market. We then proceeded back to the Foundry-room, where we found a vast of men and boys at work ; _ casting the thousand and one ,artictes which are turned out from that museum of the useful and the curious. Adjoining the moulding room is the cleaning apparatus and grix'lding stones. - Every article that is tomilded is after wards placed is drams, much resembling a steam boiler, "Adel are constantly revolving, by means of whickthe sand maxi all other foreign particles are removed from the castings, and they becomp Pirrfgi3UßGH - t.' - 4 •;!.'• • .. • • -- •. • • , .is .• •-,- ,; 11 . , :s • , : 7 . •••,' , `..`` " • • 111111111 MINIM `,.`.,NOVELTY I WORKS.". clean and bright.. About 8 tons of castings are placed In the drums at a time, and it requires about 6 hours for them to be cleaned. The cast ings are then taken to thegrindetono, and alt the rough edges are taken off. There are eight stones constantly in use, and they perform the work of an hundred files. We made a abort stay in this room, as the noise was rather too loud and sharp for our ears. We next visited the room where tho malleable castings are made. This is avery important dis covery, and the proqess is certainly exeeedingly interesting. Keys, carriage mountings, harness trimmings, window-sash, shutter fastenings, &c. &c., although nearlyas brittle as glass after be ing moulded, are converted by this annealing pro cess into the toughest articles imaginable. The castings are placed in iron boxes, embedded in the black oriati.t is nothing but the scales or particles which fall from treL, when it is under the smith's hammer. - Some 20of these boxes, containing about a ton and aliasref-taitu.-.. Inge, are placed in a furnace, where theyremain about one week. This is the whole process, which may be ranked amongst the great discos - - cries of this wonderful age. We were then taken up to the second story, where the work of finishing is going on. The first apartment we entered On this floor, however, was the Pattern room, where we found Mr. Cat- WIN ADAM, the inventor and great genius of the concern, "whittling" outwith his pen-knife some patterns for new "notions." Mr. ADAMS is one of the most ingenious men in the United States, as the endleiss variety of useful articles turned out from the Novrarr Weans will abundantly testify. During the last year six new patterns for door locks havebecn invented by Mr. imams, the most useful of Which is the "Janus-faced lock," which we predict will come into general use, as it readily answers for either side of . it . door---thus- obviating the necessity of merchants and house builders purchasing right and left handed locks. Next we were taken through a large room where the work of fitting and putting the locks together was going on. Hero every man has a particular part of work to perform, and every every thing goes on with as much system Mad regularity us clock work. In this room three men are constantly engaged in assorting the va rious pieces of castings, and taking them to the proper workmen and department& Adjoining the above is the Box-making room, where four men are constantly employed in mat ing coffee-mill boxes, and four in mating pack ins boxes. Nair by Is the inpsning room, and six men are hero engaged in coloring and varn ishing various •articles. There is also a small room on this floor where one man is employed In painting coffee-mill boxes. • On the 2I floor is another largo room, where a considerable 'number of me& are employed in finishing coffee mills and counter scales. Of •v. • .t • ••••-ei, .• • • • . r' ~:-~,. these scales (liateh's patent,) 15 dozen per week are tinishaby:four'znen; 'and of the tea scales 16 dozen more are finished per week. These scales are celebrated throughout the country for their extreme neatness and accuracy in weighing. There are 800 coffee mills mndo.per day at the We'now come to the Bd•storY . Oetita - liovr.r.rr Womts. The first room we entered was filled with workmen, engaged in drilling, fil ing and finishing keys. Before a key is finished in this room, it passes through the hands of four men, each one of whom bestows upon It amount of labor. In the Bil story there is ano ther room, , where 80men and boys are employed in putting spindles.and knobs on the locks, and packing and labeling the numerous articles man ufactured. , The knobs are made by Messrs. Brunt, Bloor & Co., of East Liverpool, Columbi ana county, Ohio. • • . .11pon enquiry at the Counting room. the fnl. have been furnished of the op , erations:lC — lbe-establistirrrearforthe•year end ing let July, last: The average of harlds employed in and out of doom exceeds three hwidred, and are all paid off in Cash, regularly every Saturday evening.— The mode of payment is so arranged and sys tamited, that it isgenendly performed within one hour (from 6 to 6 o'clock,) without tho least dis order or confusion ; The wages pay roll amounts from fifteen to seventeen hundred dollars weekly. • Tho products of the year as above stated has been as follows: Of Platform Scales, 'Fairbanks,' ca pacities from 700 lb to 6 tons of various forms • 1600 scales Of Counter. We must learn to call things by their proper names; and therm who c r y out against the low estimation in.widCitmuch that is falsely called literature is held, Ought .to know that there are many who follow, liteititigiershoWould do far better at the ploir tail. ) It, Is a libel upon the intelligence and good sense the people to suppose that protection can elevate literatUre ; and Pope committed no greater sin against the profession than by associating Grab street, seedy garments, and starvation with the very.aame of literature. The waning popularity of.our !Whig Councils is suggesting various patriotic ideasa, which may or may not be carried out, ea - 1U - iqcial pulse shall beat after the election. It is prOposed to erect in Independence Square, thirteen Menu ments, in commemoration of the thirteen origi nal States, and that a committee of delegates from those States be held in Independence an the 4th of July, 1852, to determine upon a plan for carrying the proposition into effect. There is, however, much merit in the proposi tion. There is a deplorable poverty in art, and in monuments to genius and patriotism in all our principal cities.. Pew can boast even of the squares which Philadelphia has, and no where have we parks or public gardens worthy of. the name 7 no Statues commemorative of.the past— nothing to give delight to the eye or lustre to the soul. These are unpleasant truths,• butstill they are truths, and the sooner they are told with bitter accent, the Sooner will come re form. We are too worldly—too exclusively given .; to money-making. We need more taste for art, and less taste for grog; more earo fon the•beett tiful, and lotcareleasness for ragged hldeoun ness. It wkrla•'afford a pleasing contrast to this if the receipts of the drain shops for :only a single year could be applied to the purposes of artistic and patriotic embellishment. The 'monu ment to Weshington, in the beautiful square which bears his name, and which, although tom_ menced many years ago is still hidden in the grass which overgrows the spot, would then spring into admired existence. It is to be hoped that the present project, if at all feasible, will share a better fate. But the policy to restrict contributions to the enterprise to the old thir teen States Par:arrow, seemingly,• and illiberal. It denies in effect, the existence of frate'rnal, feeling among the new States for the old. -'' It were far better that all the States unite in the enterprise, and thus make the proposed move ' le - tut* to reality movements to patriotism. Upon each should be graven the arms of the ,State it represents, with bas-reliefs of the chief battles and historical-, doeidente. Snob monuments, though cotdatenioratihg the-um tah, tei, would represent the whole country, and Alaistrotre tee the far West and in the far South would feel as deep an interest in. them and as high a pride 85 the old States themselves. Then is an effort in progress to place the Daily Netes, the Whig penny paper of this city, and which is now in the last stage of a quick Consumption, on its feet egain, and to Infuse vi tality into. It. It is greatly doubted if it can succeed, or in any way become pexma t neatly profitable. No effort , to establish a political penny paper here, hart ever paid, for any length of time, and the 'prospect is daily becoming more discouraging. Newspaper patronage and influence is very rapidly • aggre gating, and it is :certain within the uut say that of the nine daily papers printed here, net over five are paying. The others are prov. ing clearly a loss, and their aggregate issue could be pierced through and through by a good long nail. ' , The - News has long been the mere or gan of a petty faction. The powers of tho par .,ty to whom it has been opposed, propose to buy it out, place it in how hand.sorith a fund of some 13'20,000, and make another:effort. It will re quire; however, at least that much money ju diciously expended, before thepaper ,eould get a clearly recognized and undoubted existence; and then it may not. Not loss than $150,000 has' bocci absolutely thrown away within dullest ten years in efforts to establish penny political pa pers hero, and not one of them has ever attained' a paying existence. : ' - The intelligence from California is encoarag ing, and loads us to anticipate a steady supptv, of gold during the summer. The Brother Jona than and the Cresoent City bring together very near two 'Onions, and there is probably as unieh more now on ita way from Chagres. Well in formed and sagacious men, indeed, are estimat ing. the products of the , mines for the summer at five millions per month,•and it seems not im-1 probable that such a result May be realized., The, shipments of specie to Europe are very large, ! exceeding during teat week two millions and amounting daring the half year to upwards ort tienty-two millions. This active export of gold, which has now become a staple product .ed this country, is produeing a highly• faverable hifin-i ence upon financial affairs abrond ; and although, some see inevitable.disaster in it to this count' try, others quite as wise, believe the preciouri metals going abroad can do quite es much good, wherever they settle down..ae in :the, vaults of hor our own banks.
