Paid Treasure To thr &led and Common Counrils The Committee on the Water Works .respectil ly present the following brief statement of their proceedings for the year ISI7. In pursuance of resolutions of Councils, contracts were made for about Suitt/ feet of m'ainytipes to be laid principilly in the Fifth Sixth. Eighth. and Ninth Wards. Some of these are laid., and the re-- niainder are ready to be used as soon as the streets, for which they are designed shall be graded, and th weather shall become s.ufficiently settled to a.i• mit of their being opened. The contracts amount to s7,v-,8 Soon after the memorable fire of April, 1845, it was decided to replace the boar inch pipes in nod. second and fourth streets with larger ones, but as there is now a full supply through the larger mares laid in the year IS-10 on Grant, Water and - Penn streets, the 'Committee do not believe there is any immediate necessity for the change, but would recommend that the connections across Wood street be made ‘sherever they do not exist. About three months ago a flaw was discovered in each of the cylinders at the Water Works; and it extended so rapidly in the right hand cylinder,i as to render it necessary to replace it by a new:l one, and at the same time it was thought expedient to make some other alterations in the engines;l which the Committee ex per ed would render them more efficient, without materially increasing ti e consumption of fuel, - and it is believed that the left' hand cylinder can be repaired after thetew one is put in operation, v;hii ii is contracted to be ready] by the first of February. An oppromiation has.l been made to defray part of the expense of this alteration, which will i-ost fet,t)o, but the balance will regime a further apptopriation by the nest Council. The cost of permanent extensions of the work• for the year 1547, according to the statement of the superintendent, not inclu hog pipes, on hand. but not laid, and some of the last contract la hic.l4 are laid is s2,Ctb4 fhe current ewervies of the year including sl,4ltft paid on account of repairs of cylinder, &c. is 0,311 .12 PROCEEDS OF THE WORKS FOR 1547. Moore, who has had the superintendence of the works from their commencement, was thought to offer a good opportunity for making a change in their management, by separating the duties of superin intendent and engineer, thereby promoting their efficiency, and increasing the revenue derived from them. In pursuance of the ordinance on this sub ject, it will devolve upon the new Committee, more clearly to define the duties of these officers, and to select a suitable room for the office of the works, which may also be used fir the meeting of the stand ing committees of councils. When the contemplated reduction is made in the grades of Filth, Grant, Wiley, and adjoining street!, it will be necessary to lower the main pipes in that vicinity several feet, which will be attended with considerable expense and hazard, unless the work shall be done with great care, and at a season when no danger can arise from the freezing of the water in the mains.- $5lO 20 $5 18 12 There have been in all 3SSB meet of mains laid in the year 1847. The Committee beg leave to refer to the accom panying statements from the superintendent and clerk, for the details nrreceipts and expenditures, the position and size of pipes laid, and other particulars; and close their report by expressing their satisfac tion at the general conduct of those officers and the other parsons employed about the Writer Works, and their sincere hope, that this important improve ment may continue to increase in its advantages to the inhabitants, and its productiveness to the City Treasury.
