Soon after his arrival Lere confidence man No. 1 met hitn on the street, and after ascer taining where he was from and Lis des tination, f ti'ed to the Knglishmtn that the party be w-m in seirch of was an uncle of his, and he would do whit he could to g'-t him a position and would be pleased td introduce him to bis uucle No. 1 then sai l he had a quantity of baggage at one of the hotels, and asked his English friend if he would assist in carrying it to the depot. The English mau assented, and iu company with con fidence mau No. I was going up street, when confidence man No. 2 stepped up to No. 1 and said he had scut the bag gage to the depot, aud then said he wish ed No 1 would settle that little indebt edness of bis. No 1 then drew a qnantity of gold ( boens of course j from bis pocket and offered to pay No. 2 when the latter de clined taking it, stating that he preferred to have notes. No. 1 said he was sorry that he could not accommodate him, as he only had coin, and turning to bis Eng lish friend suggested, that he should give him notes for the coin, but the English man, who was not as green as they sup posed, said : "No, gentlemen,-, I thank you, I have heard of such individuals as you- are before." No. 1 then bid bis friend good by, promising to meet him at the noon traiu, but failed to do no.
