On an appeal to the Supreme Court it was decided that th e drawer was liable, he having invited tb: fraud by his own negligence. It is well known that there is a blank space on all printed promissory notes where the amount of money to be paid is written, and that at the end of this blank space the words "dollars" is printed. The Supreme Coun declared that it was neg- j ligence on the part of the drawer in not drawing a liue between the written word "hundred" aud the priuted words "dol lars," and that where such negligence ex isted, and there was nothing on the face of the note that showed any alteration, the drawer was liable. The Chief Jus tice added that the Supreme Court deem ed such a rule necessary to facilitate the circulation of commercial paper, at the same time to increase the care of drawers. This rule is only to apply, however where an alteration is not apparent on the face of the paper Clarion ia about the only county seat in Western Pennsylvania without a rail road. Highway Robbebt. This week we have to record one of the most daring highway robberies that has ocenred in Huntingdon county for many years. Friday last James A Colabine, U. S. mail carrier, started tor Huntingdon with the mail; at McAlavy's Fort, Messrs. Robt. McBurney, Samuel W. My ton and John M. Smith & Son, gave him packages containing money, checks and their bank books and requested him to take them to bank for them. With theses extra trusts Mr C. monnted on a horse, started for Huntingdon, but when about three quar ters' of a mile this side of Warm Springs, two men walking along the mad suddenly seized his hands aud demanded his money. Mr. C. called for help, where upon the robbers seized him by the throat aud after tearing his clothing considera bly, succeeded hi capturing the packages above mentioned together with SG0.09 State aud County tax and $15 00 from Mr C. own private purse. After secur ing their booty the highwaymen deliber ately walked into the woods and disap peared. Mr. Colabine, upon reaching town - bore unmistakable evidences of rough handling, his throat being quite blue and his clothing much torn. The robbers were strangers, but as they were not masked or disguised, 5fr. C. feels confident that he could recognize them upon sight. Huntingdon Monitor, 22nd ' aV last. ' w GOLDEff FOUNTAIN PEU.
