While a portion of the 114th ;Cha:lngot Regiment was stopping at the opauldiug House last Saturday, one of the soldiers nussed his roll of greenbacks, 15150. He immediate ]y charged a person near him with the theft, and all tare boys" joined in the accusation, with some tune' more severe than words. An eye-witness of tare scene says that they would have hung the rascal or killed him on the spot, had he not found voice to ask n hearing in 'another room. Once there, he Landed over the money, and was allowed to slip out of a back door, to which circumstance he undoubt ed fit owes his life. An accomplice made his exit through a window, and so the " boys" were pre v,nted from having summary vengeance. Robbing a returned soldier is a mean trick, and any one who would do it, "is mean enough to steal rotten acorns from u blind pig."—Binghamton Standard. E. A. B. 51 Increase of &darks, bit.—The following com munication having been sent to Mr. Wells, ho re turned it with the appended reply AmmEn, June 20th, 1E65. 11r. Editor Republican ..--You will very much oblige the inquiring Public by giving, through your columns, the facts In relation to the " Increase of pay," granted by by our last Legislature , to Judg es, Sheriffs, Prothonotati"s, and so down. Did our Representatives vote for it? Did they vote to In crease their own pay ? rika they take It after It was appropriated ? Or did They denounce the whole thing? Let G. R. Wells answer. For we want to know, and we have a right to know, and we expect to know soon. Pao BOISO PIMLICO. Mr. Editor:—Yours of MI lust., Inclosing the above from Auburn was duly received. "Pro Bono Public° " speaks of u Representatives "—whether ho means Mr. Osterhout and myself, or Mr. Turrell and the undersigned, or all three of us, lam unable to decide. I will endeavor to give the tads desired, so far as they relate to " GI. H. Wells," who seems call ed upon specially. In 1864 there was an increase of salaries 01 a num ber of the judges. I opposed the Increase, as can be seen by turning to Legislative Record, 1864, page 1074, where some remarks made by me will he found. In 1865 the appropriation bill contained a farther increase, including the associate judges of the sever al counties. I voted against said Increase at all times, and against the bill on Its final passage. A bill as reported in the Rouse last. wlnier In creasing tne re." of the abe., rnimmitii am ri rus!,, Clerks of the Orphans' Court, Clerks of the Court of Oyer and Terminer, &e, &e. Said bill to me was very objectionable. I opposed It. See Record, 1865, No. 58, where my views upon the subject can be found. On the final passage of the bill I had Susque hanna connty excepted from its operations. In 1864 there was an attempt to increase the pay of members-of the Legislature. The yeas and nays were called, and the attempt was detested. I voted Wiling increase. See Legislative Record, 1864, page 659. In 1865 we had the contest over again, and the pay of members was incrersed ; my vote Is re corded against Increase. See Legislative Record, 1865, No. 50. I took the extra pay, and make no excuse for do- ing so. I do not profess to be immaculate—am something of a sinner—and, in this respect, do not differ essentially from a hundred and thirty-two Senators and Representatives who took what the law allowed them and what a majority of the Legis- Ware said their services were worth. (I think they were mistaken in their estimate.) Ido not propose to defend the act, nor do I propose to go into Lam entations over the matter; I have taken the extra pay, which I presume " Pro hone Palico" would have respectfully declined. I did all I could to defeat the extra pay. The truth is t a majority of the members determined to raise their salaries, and to attempt to balk them out of it was sheer folly. The best that could be done was to call the yeas and nays and put them upon the record. I did that, and the result is as above stated.. For the last two years I believe I have represent ed as internment and honest a constituency as can he found in Pennsylvania. lem proud of that con stituency, and recognize to the fullest extent their right to call upon a public servant to give an ac count of his stewardship. That my votes have al ways been right may well be questioned, but I have done what seemed to me best under the circuth stances, and I do not now think of a solitary vote that I would change. From the time Ifirst took my seat as Representa tive, I have steadily and persistently opposed the Increase of fees and salaries ; and while good and competent men can be had to fill the various officei, without increase, it seems a matter of serious con sideration when called upon to raise them. When officers resign, or refuse to be re-elected, I shall be gin to think something Is wrong in the fee MU, or salaries are insufficient Yours, tte. GEORGE H. WELLS. Gresest, Pa, June 26th, 1865. Or. Horton, son of Samuel and Sarah Horton; aged, twenty-six years and three movallas, - The deceased was a resident of Friendsville, Co., Pa. In April, 1861, he volunteered to defend his country against treason and rebellion. He had been in the service only a few days when he was taken severely 11l with Inflammatory rhenmat lam,and after a few weeks of painful Buffeting he was dis charged. Notwithstanding his feeble health, be en listed in Co. I, '22d N. Y. Cavalry, February 19th, 1861. He was taken prisoner November 12th, 1864, and during his brief Imprisonment experienced the horrors of Richmond, and lastly, Salisbury prison.— A comrade who was with him says : " William, I think, bad the consumption, and its progress was hastened by starvation and the nature of the food furnished him. Only a few hours before he died, be said, •My sufferings are almost ended,' and be seemed to have no desire to recover. He died very easy—just like going to sleep." Thus another true patriot has fallen: Another priceless offering on the altar of our country is gone in the glorious promise of his manhood.
