Beading In Shope. The relation of an apparently unimpor. tent fact is attended sometimes by • benefits quite incalculable; and it is in hope that the proprietors of some of the manufactories in this city may be led to further inquiries up en the subject, that we_notice a plan of read ing which has been practiced for a long time in the establishment of Mr. J. W. Orr, en graver, at No. 75 Nassau street, New York,. In Mr. Orr's shop there are between twenty end ° thirty hands constantly 'employed. in wood engraving, a branch of business which . ' is carried on, to be sure, with very little noise.. Two or three years ago, in order to check the disputes which 1 frequently Arose trom the trifling conversation always apt to spring up where.ta number_tof persons are employed, he purchased a Wit, and plicing it in the hands of one of his . men, 'requested him to read it aloud for ,the benefit of the others. The work was a very interesting , one,`aird the reading could - not ' fail to be agreeable to all 'who listened. At the clOse of the day, Mr. Orr, 'upon examining the work_ performed by his hands, discovered that_they had even accomplished more than their usual task; and thus encouraged, he - continued the business of reading on the fol lowing day. , Everything moved on with the utmost order in the shop ; every one listened with.great attention ; and the amount of Is; bor performed was - fully equal to that of •the day before. This was regarded. Us. a suffic ient test of the plan, and, Mr. Orr, ventured to engage a person fie: a short period to spend the day in his shop in - reeding such works as he might select, for the entertain ment of his.men. This en - gagement has ye t c opt:inued, and Mr: Orr•declares that this um is cne of the most yaluable persons in his - employ. Every morning the leading city papers are reed•by him aloud, and .'the. men of the establishment are. not only perfectly posted, up in-regard to the news of the day, but are also rendered familiar with all its current literature while pursuing their ordi nary avocations. It is true that tn ere . are many ki sof husinesi in the. conducting of which there is too much noise to admit of anything like this ; but there.are certainly many shops in this city, in which something similar might be prsctice.d with great advantage both. :o em ployers and employed. . The success , of Mr. Orr is certainly worthy, of consideration.— -VPicark Advertiser. tar The Boston Telegraph` thinks that Pierce 's" Border Ruffian message encouraged Rust to, make his assault on 31r. Greeley, and that-40st will now be.a prominent can &date for Governor of 10isas, and may as pire to the Presidency. AS the doer is great, es than the mere proposer and theorist, so is Rust more worthy of the support of the great National Democratic party than Pierce. nrm r , Prince, the well-known nursery. man of Flushing, (L. I.) recommends the cul ture) of liquorice as one of the most impor tant plants that could be a decl to American agriculture. A 'deep sandy 'loam or other light soil is adapted to it, and\ the' plant is pr,)pagated by cuttings from the root. It yields an immense crop, is quite valuable, -and now largely imported. i The entire number GI men killed by the war in 1855, is estimated at three hun dred thousand.
