Mux Adoler, m,entions a report that tho chief astronomer at tho Washington ob servatory, was dreadfully sold a few days ago. A wicked boy, whose Sunday school experience seoms only to have mado him more depraved, caught a llro-fly and stuck it, with tho aid of some mucilage, in tho centre of the largest lens in tho telescope. That night when tho astronomer went to work he perceived a blaze of light appar ently in the heavens, and, what amazed him more was, that it would give a couple of splurts and then die out, only to burst forth again in a second or two. lie ex amined it carefully for a few moments, and then he began to do sums to discover where in tho heavens that extraordinary star was placed. He thought ho found the locality, and the next morning he tclographed all over the universe that he had discovered a new and remarkable star of the third mag nitude in Orion. In a day or two all the astronomers in Europe and America were studying Orion, aud they gazed at it for hours until they wore mad, and then they began to telegraph to tho man in Washing ton to know whathe meant. The discoverer took another look, and found that the star had moved about eighteen billion miles in twenty-four houre, and upon examining it closely he was alarmed to perceive that it had legs. When he went on the dome next morning, to polish up his glass ho found a lightning bug. Peoplo down at Alexandria, seven miles distant, heard part of tho swearing, and they say ho in fused into it much whole-souled sincerity and vigorous energy. Tho bill for tele graphic dispatches amounted to $2,600, and now the astronomer wants to find that boy. Ho wishes to consult with him about something. Catching a Tartar. A correspondent tells his experience, thus : - I saw a fellow who looked so green that, if he hadn't stirred just as he did I'd been, tempted to pour oil and vinogar on him. and cut him up for salad. lie was whittling. a stick : Says I : Halloo. Says he : Halloo yourself. Says I : Boy, if hens lay eggs for no thing, and those eggs sell for sixteen cents a dozen, what's the percentage of profit ? Says he : Mister, it would take a prophet to toll, I reckon. Says I : That's so ; what aro you making ? Says he : It's a whistle out of wilier, aud I say, mister, can you make a whistle out of a bowl of soup ? Says I : No, sir. Says he : Well, then, you ain't smart I can. Says I : Do you mean to toll me that you can make a whistle out of a bowl of soup ? Says he : Yes, I can. That there is a whistle, ain't it ? Says I : Yes, it is. Says he : Woll, I didn't make it in a bowl of soup, did 1 1 Says I : No. Says he : Well, then, I made that there whistle out of a bowl of soup, didn't I ? That made this gentleman mad, and I started to loave when he yelled out : I say, mister, if you'd lived in the days of tho ark you'd gone In through the window. Says I : Why f ' Says he : Because you are so green that the dove would have lit on you first, sure. A Pat Rejoinder. At Oxford, some twenty years ago, a tutor of one of the collegos limped in his walk. Stopping one day last summer at a railway station, he was accosted by a well known politician, who recognized him, and asked him if he was not the chaplain of College at suoh a timo, naming the year. Tho doctor replied that he was. "I was there," said the interrogator, "and knew you by your limp." "Well," said the doctor, "it seems my limping made a deeper impression than my preaching." "Ah, dootor," was the reply, with ready wit, " it is the bighost compliment wo can pay a minister to say that he is known by his walk rather than by his conversation.' tW Tho following fresh trial from ai English party is not bad : I was one ' morning overtaken by an active, hale old fellow, who had been a. sailor and seen a groat deal of sorvioe but was at the time a river bargeman. In our journey we passed a directing post, with arms in good condition aud containing full information. " Do'ee know what that is?" said my companion. "A directing post, of course."
