The BuckWhoat Crop. A correspondent of the Oermantouin Tel egraph says : Many farmers entertain the opinion that buckwheat is a very exhaueting crop. SuoU is not the case, for it is a well known fact that buckwheat has been raised on land for thirty years consecutively without manures or fertilizers of any kind, other then the straw upon which the crop grew returned to tlio soil ; and after such a long continued growth of buckwheat, the land produced with proper cultivation, good crops of wheat, com and clover. Buck wheat would be ono of the most valuable crops on thin laud, if cultivated in a rota tion with other crops and treated with a due portion of manure ; but it is consider ed a mean crop, and other crops of much lews profit and value get all the manure and good atteution. I dare say more hog or cow-feed can be obtained from thin, poor land by raising a crop of buckwheat than from any other grain, that is by fair culture. As much as sixty bushels are known to have been raised from a single peck of seed sown, and on land that would not yield ten bushels of wheat to the acre or twenty of corn. Buckwheat should be sown very thin on rioh land, almost as thin as corn is ilanted. It is a crop that will branch out very mnch, the stalks growing in imitation of young treed, the lateral branches produc ing more abundantly than if sown thick and the crop grown on top of the stalks. The buckwheat plant is the readiest and cheapest vegetable known, to plow under green as a fertilizer and pulverizer of rough land ; and it stands unrivaled for subduiug noxious weeds, when gown successively for several crops. Timothy seed will make a successful growth among buckwheat if the seed be rolled early in the morning whilo the earth is damp with dew. If the many farmers who feel a prejudice against buckwheat on account of its repu tation of making the land poor, would give the crop a fair trial with other farm crops in regular rotation they would find a great advantage in the way of having a plentiful supply of nutritious food, well adapted to the fattening of swine and othor stock. The Deacon's Swill Barrel. Just outside of the house stood father, the Deacon, tugging away at a big lump of ice in the swill barrel. "Bad business, that," said I, resting my hands on my sides. "Not half so bad as it might' a been, was the reply, as he lifted the cake of ice out by a stout stick that had frozen up in the swill. " Many an' many a barrel has busted for me that wouldn't if this knowledge had only come to roe sooner," said bo. " You see, when this cold snap came on suddenly, I thought of the swill bar'l away in the night, and I said, ' Well it can't be helped. It happened, however, that was all that saved it. A bar'l or a pail may freeze up solid, and if a stick has been put down in the water, tbo vessel can't bust. But it took me a long time to find it out never knew it till last winter ; lived seventy years before I knew it," and his eyes twinkled knowingly. . "Why, that's on the same plan," said I, " of putting a spoon in a glass jar when you are canning fruit ; if you do that, the jar won't break." "Same philosophy exactly," said he, as he gave the ball of ice a kick and sent it rolling off down the bill. , Heaves In Horse. ' A Michigan correspondent of the " Rural Home," gives the following remedy for beaves in horses : Gives once daily a tea spoonful of aquafortis, prepared as follows : mix it with a teupoonful of sour or skim med milk, and mix this with bran, and the bran with the grain fojd. ; The catarrhal flections of the throat makes rapid amend meat under this treatment and the corres pondent referred to says he has kuowo a number of cases cured by it. ' It should be given, if necessary, until a pound of acid Is used. We appose it will only cure recent cams, and not those of years' continuance. Ctuntry Gentleman. . , , liJ-Tliere is a wide field for scientific and practioal research in the mixing ' of various chemical and common substances before they are applied to the soil. I It hag been clearly proven that while lime and salt each have their own peculiar effect upon crops, yet when these two are - nixed for a few months before they are ap plied, the cflcot Is very much increased, with only the additional expense of mix ing. This is no doubt the ease with many other chemicals now used as manures.
