WHOLESALE GROCERS AND TEA DEALERS, North East Corner of 2nd and Arch Street?, Philadelphia Pa n! : : Barnnm's Unlcony Band. '. P. T. Barnura's band, In its palmy days, was celebrated for doing the worst playing beard. It was profitable, however, as the this anecdote goes to show. One morning the paper contained an advertisement " Wanted a trombone player for Bar nnm'a Balcony Band. Apply between ten and two at the office of the Museum." Bo, about eleven o'clock the office door opened, and a trombone entered, and a man behind it. "You want a trombone player?" inquir ed the new comer. " Yo," replied Mr, Barnnm. " What is the place worth?" asked the applicant. " Oh, about twenty-five dollars a week, I suppose," said Barnum. "Very well, I should like it." "All right," Baid Barnum ; and all the week through the trombone was at its post. Then came Saturday, and Mr. Green the trombone-player, presented himself for his salary. Mr. Barnum handed him a paper on which was written. "Mr. P. Green to Mr. P. T. Barnum to playing trombone on his balcony one week, 25 dollars. Received payment, August 11, 1832." Mr. Green read tho bill, smiled, and then looked at Barnum. "Well," said Barnum, "it's all right, isn't it?" Why," returned Greln, "the place is right, but you have made such a funny mistake you have made mo the debtor instead of you." " I seo no mistake in that,"said Barnum. You are tho one that has made the mis tako. You see, the case is this. There are a good many gentlemen in this city who aro fond of practicing on brass in struments, but they cannot do so at borne on account of tho neighbor's objections. So I furnish them a room on my balcony during so many hours per day, where it does no barm, the street being so very noisy, and they pay me a sum per week for my trouble in keeping tho organization full. You must have thought me green to hire and pay such an infernal poor lot of players. However, as you have been hon estly mistaken, you can pay me ten dollars this week, but hereafter I can make no re ductions." Mr. Greeu did not play the second week. Keep Cool. Capt. Fred Luce, more than forty years ago, commander of a littlo tub-like steamer, called the Huron, that plied daily between Detroit and Monroe, on the Detroit river. Capt. Fred was always profuse in bis talk when the spood of his craft was called in question, and many a passenger was induced to take a ride with him, being as sured by the urbane Fred that no boat could beat him. Leaving Detroit one morning in Juno, 1830, with quite a load of passengers, many of whom had been told that they should be landed at Monroe, long before the Daniel Webster, a first class steamer, which left Detroit about the same time, could reach there, Capt. Fred's tub labored down the river. Soon the Webster was seen bearing down upon them, with at least double the speed the Huron could make. An anxious passenger approaching Capt. Fred in an excitod manner, said : " Capt. the Webster is after us." " Keep cool, my friend," replied the jolly captain of the Huron, "we will soon- be after her." Caught a Tartar. A gentleman one evening was seated near a lovely woman when the company around hlra were proposing conundrums to each other, and turning to bis companion, he said : " Why is a lady like a mirror ?" She gave it up. " Because," said the rude'fellow, " a mir ror reflect without reflecting." " Very good," ' said she. " Now answer me. Why is a man unlike a mirror r" "I cannot tell you." 1 - , " Because the mirror is polished, and the man is not." IS" A Yale student, who is evidently in tho " Journalistic" Department, writes a twelve-verse poem for the Waverl Mag aziiu, which he entitled : " We Kissed Each Other by the Sea." Well, what of it? The seaside is no better for such practice than any other locality. In fact, we have put in some very sweet work of that kind near the tow-path of a canal in our time, but did not say anything about it in print tW A gentleman called at the house of an 1 honest old lady, for the purpose of collect ing a small debt. Not collecting the amount,he promised to send lu his bill that evening. The old womau supposing that be meant his son William, replied, " Oh la, our Sail never sit up with any one ylt ; but Bill't a clever boy, and they may build a lire in t'other room." tW A horrid small boy quite marred bit sister' pleasure during a recent examin ation of school teachers, at Oswego, by en tering the room abruptly and shouting- " Annie I your fuller' down to the bouse and want yer."
