Cider mu Pickles for Ferer. Some two month ago a resident of De troit named Broef was taken ill by aorrto sort of a fever, and for two week there was little hope of saving his life. Ho con tinued to sink in spite of &ll.1ie physicians could do, and they finally gave him up. All through his sickness the man had contin ually asked for pickles and older, and when he got so low that hi death was only con kidored a question of a few hours, Mrs. Ilroef decided to gratify his whites. A glass of sweet cider was given him, and ho declared himself much better for it. More was given him through the night, in place of medicine, and the next morning the j doctor declared a most favorablo change " had taken place. Some strong pickles were .procured and given him, and he began to call for gruel and broth. To be brief he is now able to move around the house, and everybody in the neighborhood, as well as the physician, gives the cider and the pickles the credit of performing tho cure. What is Expected of American Boys. American boys are expected to become manly men. The mother of overy boy is expected to teach him to bo obedient to parental authority, to the civil law ; and to acquire an education, a trade, a business, or an art, something for which he may be best adapted, and by which he may obtain an honest living. This is a privilege, nay more it is a duty a duty to self, to fam ily, to friends, to the State, and to the Nation ; When this is done, society has a guarantee for good conduct and usefulness of each of her sons. When it is neglected, the boys grow up in ignorance and idleness, society is taxed for their support, either in her reformatories, her jails, her hospitals, -or asylums. How much cheaper it would be to have everybody properly educated, trained and disciplined, so that he could be a blessing Instead of a curse to the world. Jle is sure to become one or the other. Taste tbat will Keep a Year. Dissolve a ieaspoonful of alum in a quart of warm water, . When cold stir in as much Hour as will give it tho consistency of thick cream, being particular to beat up all tho lumps ; stir in as much powdered resin as will lay on a dime,' and throw in a half dozen cloves to give a pleasant odor. Have on the Are a tea cup of boiling water, pour the flour mixture into it, stirring well all the time. In a very short time it will be the consistency of mush. , Pour it into an earthen or china vessel ;'" let it cool ; lay a cover on, and put iq a cool place. When needed for use, take out a portion and soften it with warm water. Paste; thus made will last twelve months. ' It is bettor than gum as it docs not gloss tho paper, and can be written upon. ,V How to Make a Side Walk. The following is a good recipe which may come into use handy some day when the cold weather ruins your sidewalk. When you make a sldowalk you want tq make it very narrow and very high, some, thing like the shape of an egg. . Then when any one slips on it, a leg will go off at each sidoj and he will be split through to the chin, and die without a struggle, and Ins wife, can got the insuranoe, ana - marry a man who will go into business and make an assignment. On any other walk a man will fall and cripple himself, and live on for four years after his wife is dead, and then die and leave his insurauce money to his mother. Cure for Felon. As soon as discovered take some spirits of turpentine in a cup, dip the finger in it then hold the band near a hot fire till dry, then dip it in again and repeat for fifteen minutes, or till the pain ceases. The next day, with a sharp knife, pare off the thick skin and you will find - something like honey comb filled with clear water, open the cells and the felon is gone. Another. If the felon is too fur advanced . for the turpentine, Oil of Origanum, treat ed in the samo way, will cure. If too far advanced for either to cure, the felon will be benefited, as it . will bo less painful Never draw it. , Hew to Use a Grind Stone. First Don't waste the stone by running it in water ; but, if you do, don't allow it to stand it water when not in use, as this will cause a soft place. Second Wot the stone by dropping water on it from a pot suspended above the stone, and stop off Ibe water when not in use. Third Don't allow the stoue to get out of order, but keep it perfectly round by the use of a gas pipe on a hacker. iyThere is no approbatlveness in Na ture.
