FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS The Model Farm of Missouri. milE furm of John W. Harris, Ka qof 1 Jioone county, iuo., is styled tno " Model Farm of Missouri," and certain ly is ono which many farmers would do well to pattern after, some on on equal scalo, and otheri on a smaller one. This farm is situated nbout twelve miles from Columbia City, Boone county, Mo., and about three miles north of the road leading from that city to Kochoport, on the Missouri river. It embraces 1,950 acres of land, all in one body; 1,880 of it uuder a "jam up good fence a Missouri phrase, signifying " horse-high, bull-strong, and nig-tight." He plows but littlo land In proportion to the wholo amount. His usual crop is 120 acres of corn, 120 acres of wheat, 50 acres of oats, 50 acres of Hungarian grass and 100 acres of meadow, the balance being in pasture. He has for years grown Hungarian grass, and feeds it liberally to all stock on the farm, con sidering it better and more profitable than meadow hay. He has never experienced any bad results from its use, which in quautity rises from 100 to 150 tons year ly. His experience in this respect is a general one in his neighborhood, contrary to the opinion of most farmers. He has sixty head of Dorhatn cattle, and a fow thorough bred Alderneys, which he prizes above all others for their milking capacities. It is a remarkable fact that the milk of the Alderney cow is as superior in richness to that of the com mon breed as the latter is better than skimmed milk. In addition to his breed ing stock, he has fifty head of Durhams that are ready for the butcher that be ing the number which ho usually feeds each winter.) He has also,. 350 head of Texas cattle, very largo, selected last full at Baxter Springs; 400 head of sheep a cross between the Costwold, Southdown and Merino ; 200 head of hogs, most of thorn was ready for the June market ; a cross between the Magio (or Poland China) and Berkshire. He esteems the cross better than the fullblooded of either kind, the first being too course and' the latter too smull. His work stock ' con sists of ton mules and the three yoke of oxen. He has seven brood marcs, sev eral riding and driving horses, and about forty young muloa. ' He has. four largo barns, the finest in the State, and capable of sheltering about 300 head of stock, and holding feed sufficient to carry them through an ordinary winter. He usually employs about six hands by the year, paying them $20 per month, furnishing them with a comfortable house, truck patch, wood, fruit, &c, they nearly all being married men and boarding them selves. He also has a headman or super intendent that he pays $600 per year.. Of course so large a place to be "run ". so successfully must be conducted on scientific principles. Mr. Harris does business on a scientific basis. A corres pondent of Column's Rural New Yorker, who lately interviewed him, says : " I spent one whole day riding over the placo with the proprietor, and I don't think I exaggerate any whon I say he got down from his horse fifty times to put up a rail that had been thrown from the fence, or to tuk .out his pocket:knife and cut a dock root or mullen stalk. He has five or six miles of young hedge ; several orchards, his place being compos ed of several farms purchased from dif ferent owners. The grounds surround ing bis house are ornamented with forest trees, evergreens, Bhrubbcry and flowers, and if his children ever go to (ho great city, it will not bo with the excuse that home is not attractive. Bad Bread. The amout of injury done to the tender stomachs of young children, invalids and sedentary persons by eating bad bread day after day, from one year's end to another, must be enormous. A cook who cannot make good bread of every description ought not to be allowed house room for an hour; and tho mother is criminally negligent, whatevor may bo hor position, who does not teach hor duughtcr to know what good bread is and how to make it. Alum is used to give white ness, softness and capacity of retaining moisture. .. Limo could.be employed with oqual effect, having the advuntugo of correcting any sourness in the bread or tilomach; beside affording an important ingrediont for making the boue strong. Kvory housekeeper should know how to make two or three kinds of bread. How to Sure lour Shoo Soles. , Melt together tallow and common renin, in the proportion of two parts of tlio former to one of the latter,' and ap ply the preparation, hot, to the soles of the boots or shoes as much of it as the leather will absorb. Ouo farmer declares that this little . recipe alone has been worth more than the cost of five year's subsoribtioo to the newspaper publishing t. DrugsL;, Drygs!
