On this day there were 74 car ,loads of passengers, 65 of theme peing taken to Atlantic City. During that week :e2,000 rail- ;road passengers pai•sed ater the ferry at Vine street - wharf. Capt. T. S. Evans, the veteran , slip : tender, admits that in all his life-long ex ` Iperience at the ferry lie never passed so many •people in the same length of time. Besides "Ithis number of passengers, there were about +x,:.7,0,000 additional, of local travelers, making a „total of 32,000—being over 5,000 each day. The officers of the company are careful in ,management, all the rolling stock, is duly ex amined, and the road is always kept in good , order, twenty-eight miles of it being perfectly straight, running due .northwest and, south.- , east. The engineers are experienced and .skillful men.; the conductors perfect gentle .men, and the other employes attentive to their respective and arduous vocations. t , . A liicE LITTLE GANE.—The arrivals of '• peaches," watermelons and cantelopes were ,never heavier than , they have been the present :season, and any person who will take the trou ble to visit Vine street hill, from Delaware , .avenue to Front street, will find the, street blockaded With wagons loaded with these fruits. As this hill is a 'public. highway, and not a stand for the sale of - fruit, or anything else, the question naturally arises, why do the , police of Mayor Fox permit the street to be thus blocked, morning, noon and night, by the middlemen or hucksters? The whole thingis , a nuisance and unjust towards the pro- 'duce merchants in the vicinity; who pay, taxes and store rents. The nuisance complained of • - was never permitted tinder the former' mu ,nicipal administration, and its toleration at the present time may be attributed to the fact that each huckster pays,, 'as " hush-money," twenty-fife • cents per day •to police officers, amounting in the aggregate to at least' fifty dollars per week. The immense, business done in this locality by carters, carmen and dray men, pursuing legitimate occupations, is often seriously interfered with by these standing ---wagons: THE WATER SUPPLY.—The head of water in the southeastern part of the city has been so weak for several ,days that hot waiter was forced into the service pipes, thus making it almost impossible ,to obtain the fluid in a cold , condition. This Of course, was in such dwell ings as are supplied with the proper arrange _ ,-znents for hot and cold water. In one instance ;that came under our personal observation a very fierce head of dry steam ritslred out of the hot faucet when it was opened. We do --not knoW whether there is, any danger of a water-back, or biller exploding, because of the want of a proper head of water, but it would be safe, however, from such disaster if the fires were kept in a reduced state in the - kitchen ranges or heaters. Pie • tUeD, 11p011 being questioned why WO' as sailed the man in this manner, gave the reason That they did not think hiM tit to associate withithein, because he had recently been ap-. pointed on the police force by Mayor Fox, . , and was subsequently disinissed, his character being very low in the scale Of depravity. BLIGHTED AEFE4,ITIONEL Breach of Proximo of Marrjage,Heavv Dannices—One Hundred and Eleven LoVe Letters. , r [From the London Sun, Aug. 16.) A breach of promise case, in which heavy dainagei Were 'obtained, has been tried at the Liverpool Assizes The plantiff was Miss Kato Fleming, a young lady, twenty years of the second daughter of the late Mr. Fleming; of Glasgow, a well-known account ant, who died in 1866. • The, defendant was Mr. James Elliot:Thompson, the son of the eminent shipbuilder,_of Sunderland, and was 24 years of age. While Mr. Fleming's life lasted , his means were good and his daughter was consequently sent to a good school in Edinburglkwhere she was a,schoolfellow of the defendant's sister, who there became her inti mate friend. She was therefore, invited to stay at the Thoinpsons' house Sunderland, and spent Christmas of 1865 there,.and made the acquaintance there of the defendant. In the summer of 1867 she was asked by her friend's family to join a Continental trip, but her father' having died in the meantime. 'and, contrary to expectation, having left his family in somewhat embarrassed circumstances, she was compelled to de cline the invitation from a failure of means. In the meantime'slielad been offered a home by her sister and her husband, a gentleman named Acheson, and she lived with them at a residence called Windsor Lodge, near Dublin, and sometimes at a shooting-box which he rented, Balled Kippua Park, in the county of Wicklow. She visited the Thompsons, hovi ever, again at the Christmas of 1867, spending several weeks with them - timit.nd thimvit was that her engagement with the de rmds irFlaw's Lonsent eugagementnd the correspondence then commenced. It was very voluminous, extending into the February of , the present year and contained in all 111 letters, but comparatively few of them were used in . court.' They began in the usual gush ing style, and went on so until the defendant wished to have the marriage-day settled in November. But the plaintiff would have it put off until February. After that the corres- , pondence on the plaintiffs side was a trifle cooler.: By-and-by the time camefor buying the . furniture; and in the letters between, the couple on this subject the plain tiff charged his "darling Kate" with being un-: eoncerned about the future. She replied that: she was not so. She was not so enthusiastic, about getting the linen—bed or table—as he, had expected. What he would seem to have wanted was to have, produced 'a coolness on Miss Fleming's side such as existed on his own. hart. In this, however, he was not successful. She tied:tied. her willingness to . do what, She• could ,and charged him with being cool towards her. By and by he brought matters to a consum- Mati on by a letter,in which he Said : "I received your two letters, alSo one frOmAeheson. I am . sorry to say that I am disappointed in the way tins engagement of ours has turned out. I think I. have been deceived about many things in linen (there was here again: much laughter as the learned counsel read the letter). Had I known yon were Making no effort to do 'things for your self I might have got my sisters to have worked them. I was not aware lately that 1 was expected to provide clothing for the lady before marriage. I. cannot ex press to you how much I am disappointed, and' I think it better for both parties if this Marriage, were broken oft I regret it very mach, and cannot see any prospect of happiness for the future.. You •ought to have dealt candidly withme." Vpon this letter both Mr,Acheson and his protege; wrote pro . testing '- against the defendant's cruelty. Thompson irrote back asking . Miss Fleming whether she did not think it better under the circumstances for the engageinent to be broken.
