To conserve or• . preserve what is right Is of itself, very re spectable, and very respectable people en gaged mit To be a conservative, In such a sense, Involves no reproach; mid every good man is, more or leas, a conservative, In that view of the eve. But, conservatism, as it is known to-day in this country, means simply resistance to change.. Itelings to what is, not because it triefgAt, but simply because it is. It is .hostile to all progress, to all reform, to all egosta at bettering or improving the condi tion of the human race; and wherever any old evil clings with desperate tenacity to life, there the conservatives are gathered together. The conservatism of the. North was fur a long time the great bulwark of American slavery. It was the first to hurl stones at the old-time Abolitionists, and amused ite t leispre hours in throwing rotten eggs aq them, mobbing thein, leading them about _theLaireeth with halters around their necks, sad occasionally gutting or firing their dwellings; and through all the struggle of a life-time, which - has at last ended in the abolition of slavery, conservatism has always stood by the side of the oppressor. Having failed to sfistainslavery, it !snow rallying to the congenial task of resisting the education, enlightenment and' enfran thisernrnt of -the negro race. if it cannot keep the negroes enslaved, It can, at least, (or so it hopes,) keep them ignorant - .and degraded, and prevent then from attaining ' !tthe comforts and rights of civilized life. We well remember the first freedmen's that was established after the war brcke out. Self-denying men and wzraen went dowit to South Carolina and opened schools to which the negroes docked with the utmost eagerness to learn; but the ,'Conservatives," who just then had con t trol of the army, instead of rejoicing at this . evidence of progress and encouraslog it, sneered at it, impeded the movement every possible way, and tabooed every man and woman engaged in it. The army has changed since then, and for the better; but the conservatives, have never ceased to 1 throw dirt at the teachers, to interpose every possible obstacle in the way of the 1 schools, and to exercise its utmost power towards keeping the negio ignorant and en. • alaved. The effort to establishschools among the freed.negroes is one that might well be sup. . posed to amical-sueccasfully to the better 1, 'catnip of every intelligent man; but Con aeriedisui.knooks the wind.completely out 1, of such a sopposition. It is , not so very long since it resisted the education of the whites; and now-very many of those oda '. cated in spite of it, smite with it in refusing education to another race as fully entitled to its blessings as they. They will prate homilies by the hour about the bless ' ingiSof,education, but ask them to aid in edit atlng a down-trodden race and they will tell yorrthat the privilege of learning , .belcingra only to the "superior" race. • The -glut fear of the Conservatives is that pie, negroca will, if educated, be . brought to an - "equality" with Heayen help ms 1 Itildt.tlieblick race should attain to enlighterintea aid the enjoyment'of their ghts, we, shall be much &sap , vilified if they rest contented with being Ple* s iciuld" to. the Conservatives. ,If 'they 'oottla- not rise above that point it Would hardly be Worth 'while - to later for -; 'heti elevation. ANDREW, tz Psswit and G. F. Prznors, of the Metho dist Episcopal Church south, have issued a pastoral address, dated at Columbus, Ga., Aug. FT, 1865. Allusion is made in the opening part of the address to the suffering caustd by the war, and a hope exprestal that peace will bring, in its train, spiritual blessings, and civil and social order. Tao people are exhorted to put away all bitter ness, and wrath and anger, and build sip the waste places of the church. The end of the warshcuid be the end of strife. In the parts of territory in the South whe e the war has raged most fiercely, the churches will be ill able to support them elves. The people are, however, exhorted not to diminish the number of churches. The obligation of the church to promote the spiattual welfare of the Freedmen is recognized. The cardinal truths of Chris tianity, heretoldre, they say, taught to them and the moral training given to the slaves, has contributed, it la thought, very materially to their discreet and Inoffensive behaviour daricg the late rebelli,m. On the subject of re-union with the Church North, the address says that a dele gate from the Sonthern Church was refused admission Into a convention of the Church North In 1848, and the - bishops now would be excused from any farther reference to the subject. They feel bound to say : "Since then the position of northern Methodists as towards us has been some what chta4ed. Having agreed with us on a plan of separation into two independent ecclesiastical jurisdictions and for an equit able division of the church property, they aftenvatde sought to repudiate their cove nant and to evade payment; and were only brought to settlement at the end of the law. This, though granted by themselves, who were M a majority, and subsequently con limed by the Supreme Court of the United States as the basis of our legal and constitu tional rights; has been, whenever conve nient, ignored by them." The church North is charged .with hav ing endeavored, by misrepresentation, to fix without cause, the character of seces sionists and schismatics on the church South. The abolition of slavery now, ac cording to this address has nothing to do with the questions prominent In the sepa tion of 1844. It is evident, say these bishops, that a majority of the northern Methodists have become Incurably radical; that they teach for doctrines the command merits of men; that they preach another gospel; that their pulpits are perverted to agitations of questions not healthful to personal piety, but promotive of political and ecclesiastical discord, rather than those ends for which the church was instituted; and that they have gone on to twice° con. ditiouts on discipleship that Christ dl.l not impose. The address says; "Such a change as we see no immediate prospect of, in their tone and temper an.l practice, mast come before we can amid pate any good result from even entertainln,t the subject of rcenion with them. Fidelity two hat seems our providential mission ie quires that we preserve oar distinct eccle siastical organization in all its vigor and :integrity, free from all entangling alliances with those whose notions of phtlanttinioy and politics and social economy are liable to give an ever-varying complexion to their theology. Let us abide in our lot and be true to oar calling, doing what we can to spread scriptural holiness through these lands, and ,o oppose the tide of fan aticitnovhich threatens oar overflow." The bishops say that the conduct of the Northern Method's: bishops and preachers, "in taking tillvantage of the confusion incid ent in a state of war to intrude themselves into several of our houses of worship, 'sad their continuing to hold these places against the wishes and protests of the congrega tines and their rightful owners, causes us sorrow and pain, not only as working an injury to us, but as presenting to the world a spectacle ill calculated to make an impres sion favorable to Christianity." The Church South is warned •o be on its guard against the action of the church North which is charged with having inau gurated a systematic attempt to disturb, dis integrate and absorb the Southern member ship. Preachers are to be sent South and societies planted wherever there Is an open- ing. This policy according t.> the bishops "points evidently to the division, destruc tion, end ecclesiastical devastation of the soul kern church." The Southern members are urged to sub mit cheerfully end in good faith to the gov ernment of the United States. An enlight ened conscience and sound judgment, call lox this course. Our tinders can judge ferthemaehres of the patriotism -good fafth and chrfslanity of the" body which puts forth this address.
