The firing upon Massachusetts troops panning through Baltimore; the burning of bridges and the tearing np of railroads to prevent North ern troops from going to tho relief of 'Waabingtou; the treasonable acts of Mar shal Kane, Boss Winans, and other leading Baltimoreans; the at tempt of the Maryland Legislaturo to take the State out of the Union, and the raining of troops to assist in establishing the Southern Confederacy, are chapters in the history of Maryland which can never be forgotten. And no man at this day can have sufficient hardi hood to deny that slavery was the cause of the disloyal attitude of Maryland three years ago. Because of slavery, many of her rulers and leading citizens, and cer tainly a majority of her wealthy class, were willing and anxious to cast their lot with the Southern Confederacy. Bat the war has changed all this. It is, indeed, a civilize,. Omitting her slave holders, Maryland is to-day ono of the most loyal States in the Union. Winter. Da vis and Reverdy Johnsen and Cloy. Bloke are her representative men, and their voice is not only for a vigorous prosecution of the war, but they are earnestly in favor of destroying the cause of the war. They are emancipationists of the straightest sect.t And the resat of their leadership is given us in the everwhebning verdict of the Maryland people on Wednesday in fa vor of calling a convention to abolish slav ery throughout the State. All hail, Mary land! We can can soon, class thee and welcome thee as a free State of the now Organization of a' Fremont Club Our local columns this morning present a report of a meeting held in this city last night for the purpose or organizing a Foo tway Club. The call kir this meeting bad been. published in tho papers of the city for several days. Not more than two hundred persons were present. It was not a German meeting. On the contrary, our German citi zens seem to Imp given it the cold shoulder, for they took no part in its deliberations. lt,was managed entirely 'by gentlemen who have not been supposed -to have much influence upon the German vote of this city. During the reading of the resolutions, the name of President lutcot.a wao received by a general stamping of feet and clapping of hands. We judge that, if a vote had been taken, a majority of the spectators would have. declared in favor of the re nomination of Old /the. The meeting, re garded as a demonstration in favor of General FILE/JOST, was simply a failure. 1r was mentioned in our telegraphic re port of Congressional Meetings, a day or two ago, that the House of R•preoentatives laid on the table a reguetit from thellaval Committee for leave of absence to explore the Mississippi river, in order to discover a proper site for a naval depot.
