Balls Again In Control of the "Wheat Mar ket Corn Opens Well, but Soon De pressed on Scalpiny Sales Advance in Oats Lost. Chicago, May 13. Tho bulls were still in control of the wheat market to-day. There were higher cables, a good demand for May wheat and steadily decreasing stocks here, improved financial outlook abroad, some bad crop news and an export demand at tho board. Shorts covered freely, and there wa3 a sharp demand from other sources. July opened at $1 011 01J and sold up to $1 01 almost at once. Then on scalping sales it retired to $1 0 the lowest point of tho day. An advance to $1 02V follow ed. Realizing sales depressed it to fl 0 and then shot up to $1 03K, tho top figure of tho CACcinn mill tfilnrnrl 3. l lrnr r rl tm session, nnd closed ?uO lower and firm. Cora was as strong as wheat early, but the maikct collapsed under the weight of offer ings of cash corn tO arrive, prospective heavy receipts and tho operations of certain traders supposed to bo "long." July opened at 59KC0!c, advanced to 61Ke and dropped to 59c, closing ono point higher. Oats opened strong under an urgent de mand for shortSj scoring a good advance, but losing It all subsequently and closing at tho inside figure. The provision market was lower at the opening, but there was an Immediate rush of slioitsto cover, which caused a speedy re covery. The caily strength of corn also stimulated tho buj ing, and the later reaction, m w hich most of the early ad anco was lost, was caused by tho downward tendency of corn toward the close of the session. Pittsburg's Business of a Nature to Eesist Outside Pressure. A SELF-POISED HIVE OP INDUSTRY. Ko Xew Features in local Stocks, but For eign Advices Assuring. OFFICE AM) STREET NEWS AND GOSSIP It is essential to a just appreciation of the character of the business transacted in Pitts burg and to properly account for the re markable material growth of the last few years, to remember that it is of the solid sort which is not liable to increase or di minish as the wind blows hot or cold. The products turned out here arc of prime neces sity and aro as stablo as wheat, corn and meat. Speculative commodities are often depre ciated on mere rumor, but Iron and glass, coal and coke have a permanent valuo and find a ready market, and they cannot bo "cornered." Intimately associated w ith all the great activities of tho people, they are superior to manipulation and always bring rcaay casn. A community so well poised as this Is, so nearly self-sustaining, with largo and con stant accessions of capital and enterprise, has little to fear from outside influences, so long as homo nttatrs aro managed discreetly. Panics ahroadandhlgh-jlnks in Wall street and Chicago serve to make local financiers more cautious, if possible, but they are al ways prepared tosustainlegitimntelntercsts nnd encourage the judicious expansion of business. Old John Adams said: "Millions for de fense, but nothing for tribute." In like man ner Pittsburg Is always ready to encourage genuine enterprise, but has no mercy for wildcats, xnis wise discrimination Detween substance and shadow enables her to move along serenely when other cities are barely able to keep their heads abovo water. Business News and Gossip. Wood street, Wilklnsburg, is being paved with brick. The work is w ell under way. The Dispatch representative was reliably Informed yesterday that neither M. K. Moor head nor John B. Jackson is a director in tho Rolled Steel Carriago Wheel Company, as re ported In ono of tho morning Journals. Captain Vandergrlft and the Thaw estate have not abandoned the purpose of building on their Wood street lots, but will not begin until next year. Henry M. Long, as well as other brokers, received numerous letters yesterday from holders of Electric stock, asking advice as to surrendering the required 40 percent. Mr. Long thinks that is the best that can bo done under the circumstances. A prominent architect said yesterday that tho Exchange building could be easily con verted into a first-class office- building, the walls being strong enough to sustain two additional stories. Its central location would, he thought, insure ready occupancy. Of 19 purchase money mortgages on file for record yesterday, the largest was for $15,000. The promptness with which mort gages aro being satisfied shows that tho peo plo have money. The sale of a residence on Sherman avenue, Allegheny, for $10,000 was reported yester day, out neither tho location nor thenanio of the buyer could be ascertained. The reaular meeting of the Real Estate Auction Board was held yesterday. Only routine business was transacted. 1L J.Stonev. Jr.. has made a comntlatfon of tho Pittsburg national bank returns from omciai statements to tno controller under tho call of tho 4th inst, and issued it in a handsome and convenient form. It is of special value to investors. Henry M. Long sold Pleasant Valley. George B. Htll & Co. sold Electric and Fred Rincnart bought. Pittsburg Traction bonds were offered at 104. In view of the new deal in Elec tric, tho dissatisfaction of some of tho Chartiers Company stockholders and tho changes in the management of Switch and Signal, investors, as w ell as roonii traders, seem disposed to maintain a watting atti tude until such time as there real or sup posed troubles can be removed. N The strong tone of the Tractions Was the best feature of tho. day. Tho increasing de mand, for theso securities shows thatthey are considered a purchase at present irices, and possibly something above. It was said tho Duquesne road would bo operated! next juonuay. xor juancnestcr, 37 was! bid, without bringing any of it out. After the last call there was a sale at 38. A transac tion at this figure was reported on Tuesday. It is high water mark so far. The natural passers weio steady, as were the miners. Very little was said about tho Chartiers meeting, nor was there much occasion .for comment, since nothing was done to change the situation of affairs. If a majority of the stockholders are satisfied with tho manage ment, tho public will have to be There was a bid of 7, with an offeratlO. The rest of tho list was steady. Concerning tho plan of reorganization of the AN estinghouso Electric ana Manufactur ing Compnny, tho Boston Harold of Tuesday says: "The Wcstinoiinnsn rpmimntrnflniJ plan was given rather a cool reception at thq stock Exchange this morning, but later in, the day the bidding was rather active, the common stock rising sharply, and 25c be ing bid for assented common, which was more than tmdnm lmH iaiim,.tA,i n-n ft- lev not a pleasant duty to discuss tho rebrgani-) rrn -tfrt mIhh Ffll. . . .J i ""' i'""u .me company wasm straitenca circumstances. Tho plan might have been more explicit in some-paw ticulars for tho enlightenment of common shareholders." This conforms very closely to the prevail ing sentiment in Pittsburg. It was a defe Eerato case, -a struggle to keep out of tlAe nnds of the Sheriff, and demanded herdlo treatment. There appeared to bo no orders hero for the atoc yesterday, and the low transactions that-occurred were in the way of covoring sllort3. Tho excitement on tho London Exchange had subsided, ow lug to reassuring news from Portugal. Portuguese securi ties advanced ii per cent. The Bank of Englnnd made largo discounts at 5 per cent, nnd there were rumors that the rato would be put up to-day. Paris was buoyant, powerful bankers having come to thOTescuo of tho Imperiled institutions. The most as suring report w as that Russia had decided to allow its largo deposits of gold to remain in the banks of other nations. NEW YOEK STOCKS. A Better Shore Market Caused by the Im proved European Situation Real izations Cause a Slight Set-Back Near the Close Sugar Weak. Xew York, May 13. It is now admitted that the future of the stock mai ket hinges almost wholly upon tho European financial situation. The news from the other side, however, was of a more reassuring character than that of vesterdav. The hulls were not inclined to push their advantage too far, as the many adverse developments of late have rendeied them more cautious. Tho favorable aspect of affairs on the other side, was, to a certain extent, met by con tinued engagements of gold for 0 xport. The opening prices were lrom to per cent better than last night's final figures, and while the pressure to sell was heavy nothing but the Industrials yielded to any material extent. To-day prices responded promptly to tho improved conditions, and after tho first drivo tho course of values was steadily upwaid until near tho close, when realiza tion on the advance on the day by he trading clement caused a slight setback. Tho Grangers were still th 0 most important group, bat the upward movement attained largo proportions also in Lackawanna, tho Wheeling and Lake Erie, Louisville, C, C., C. &St.L. and Pacflfc Mall. Tho Industrials were the w oak points in themarket.but only Sugar showed any material decline, which lasted until tho final sale. The market closed quiet and steady, generally at tho close to tho best figures. Tho final changes are all in tho direction of hicher nrices. and while Sugar was an exception with a loss of 2 per cent, St. Paul is up 1; C, C, C. & St. L., Lackawanna and Pacific Mall, each ; Rock Island, Burlington and Louisville, each 1, and Wheeling and Lake Erie, 1 per cent. Railroad bonds were again dull, while tho transactions reached a large number of Is sues. Final changes are generally small ad vances.
