ssESsa WW&??" - &f&p? THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, MONDAY.- FEBRUARY 2, 1891 8 PL V 5 WORK OF THE MONTH. The Tear ef 1891 in the Oil Business Starts Off With Quite a LARGE INCREASE OF PRODUCTION. Points of the Field Which Are Kow of Par ticular Interest THE FACTS AND FIGURES IN DETAIL The first monthly report of the new year presents a bearish aspect as to new pro duction. The newjiork, however, is rather bullish, hut the decline is in the northern and middle fields. Jadnary, without ques tion, has been invested with more interest and importance than at any other time since the beginning of the petroleum industry. "While the field situation is an important factor in this conclusion, the commercial in terest in the great staple overshadows all other considerations. During the month the independent element of the producing fraternity have organized one of the most powerful and stable combination in tbe history of the trade. This combination has been formed with a view of establishing better prices, but just what the outcome of the reor ganization of the old P. 1. A. will amount to remains for time to develop. The producers have not only organized themselves into one compact body, but have sought relier through legislation, by which they hpe to ameliorate their condition. For the past 30 days there are a few changes to bo noted in the held situation. Wildwood, one of the most prolific white sand pools ever opened up, practically remains unchanged. The Southwest still continues to yield producers of the first magnitude, while, on the other hand, tbe old gushers are fast de clining and the territory Is showing drainage. Borne interest was manifested on tbe north line by the good shouting of tbe Bowman easer, and for a time it was thought that this section of the pool would develop into big territory. Subsequent events have not borne out this premature conclusion, and we venture the opinion unless all signs tail that this local ity of the Wildwood field -will never have a comparison with the Southwest end of the field. The McCardy pool is as yet an unknown quantitv. The Palmer well coming in at 000 barrels a day would seem to demonstrate tbe existence of a considerable body of oil. Yet its proxiinitv to the old McCurdy well does not indicate there has been territory to any extent opened up. While there has been one good well struck here, there has been one dry holo on the Linton and another nearly so on the Tidball. but a liberal use of glycerine con verted it into a small producer. The Butler county situation appears about as follows: There is a standoff in the way of new rigs and drilling wells. Harmony, Gallery and Jef ferson Center having sufficient new work to offset tbe decline in the old portion of the One Hundred-Foot district, which seems to no longer be "in it." At Callery most of the work is on the town lots and is launched. Several wells have come in large, but have been short lived, notably the Bartlej S. Co., which made 1.500 barrels in the first 21 hours, and is now down to 50 barrels. The same mav be said of Harmony. Several dry holes have been drilled at the latter place, nearly encircling tbe little pool. There is a possibility of an extension to the west, which appears to be the only loop bole of escape. At Jefferson Center T. W. Phillips brought in a well on January 17 that has produced over 10.000 barrels and is still making 25 barrels per hour. There is appar ently quite a pool of oil lying between this well and Herman. Mr. Phillips has about all tbe territory ina can develop it at his leisure. Tbe new production for the month will exceed that of last month by at least 500 barrels, leaving new work and drilling wells aixmt tbe same as January 1. The total increase of new production in the 13 pools of tbe southwest district over last month is 5,124 barrels. Wildwood is mainly responsible for the increase, yet it must be re membered that Mannington was also an im portant factor in contnbuting to this result. The report lor the same section also shows an increase in new work, there being 190 wells drilling. So rigs, making a total ot 275, while in December there were 1SS drilling wells. 72 rigs, a total of 260, which is an increase ot 15. From tbe appended summary of tbe entire oil field it will be seen that tbe new production is 13.360 barrels, an increase of 4 96S barrels. There were SOS wells completed, 407 wells drill ing and 233 rigs up and bmlding. Following is tbe work in detail of the impor tant southwest pools. TVlldwood. WELLS COMPLETED. Farm. Owner. Sacred font: flow on forever, Health on mankind still bestow; If a virgin woo thee give her Rosy cheeks and beauty's glow. If an old man, make him younger, Suffering mortal soothe and save, Happier send them home and stronger, All who quaff thy fervid wave. These lines were written by Labkowitz.thegreatBohemian Poet, and were translated from the Latin by Lord Alvanel. They were inscribed upon a bronze tablet, and placed in a conspicuous position to be seen by the multitude who visit Carlsbad. It scorifies the virtue of the Sprudel Spring, from which the celebrated Sprudel Salt is obtained, in glowing terms. Goethe, Schiller, Her der, and nearly all poets have written in prose and rhyme of the great virtues of the Spring, and many had reasons to be truly thankful. Goethe espe cially, whose life was prolonged by a considerable time by the use of the waters. What'the Greatest of All Modern Scientists Has to Say Upon the Most Important of All Subjects. . Professor Koch, the great German physician who discovered the microbes which cause cholera, claims to have discovered a way ot curing consumption, by vaccination. As more than half of all the deatbs which occur every year are caused by consumption, it Dr. Eocb's claim is true, it is tbe greatest discovery of the nineteenth century. But there seems to be some doubt as to whether it can be made prac ticable In all cases, while in every case it is certain to be a very expensive cure and one that can only be indulgedin by the very wealth iest. In the course of his remarks upon the subject, however. Professor Koch makes a most won derful statement, which is as follows: "Alcohol is a food in consumption." He does not Bay that it is a temporary aid, but an absolnte food, sustaining the life, building up the strength, and restoring tbe health. This is a most im portant statement and proves beyond question the great value 'of alcohol in the treatment of disease. It should be remembered, however, that alcohol is never taken in its natural form and that whiskey is tbe finest manner in which alcohol is ever combined. Even then, it must be pure beyond question, or it injures instead of aids. It is the possession of this quality of purity and its medicinal power which has made Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey so immeasurably superior to any other known whiskey in the world. It has saved the lives of many men and women who were on the downward road to consumption, and it will check the first stages of consumption or prevent pneumonia in every case. Great care should be exercised to secure only the genuine, and no dealer; however un scrupulous, should be allowed to substitute in ferior and perhaps injurious whiskey. it BLUE LABEL KETCHUP.
