Buyers were not present in as large force as of late, and the few on hand MK their aavantage aud inado the most of it. Markets opened er sluggish at a decline from last week s prices all along the line. Light, tidy batcher beeves, such as our mar kets call for of late, held up best, but the leavy run of other grade and general depres sion affected to some degree even this class of cattle. The genera! opinion of commission men was that markets were oil from 15c to 25c from prices of last Mondav As pastures are on tlio wane farmers are disposed to crowd their in fenorstock on tl'e markets, and the rcsultis that all low trades of cattle are in supply far above demand There were 15 loads of sheep and lambs on sale this morning, and markets were steady at last week's prices. JVlient Takes a Downward Course, Due to Heavy Selling and Large Visible Sup plyCorn and Oats Let Go in Sympathy. CH ICAGO Wheat There was moderate trad ing to-day and the feeling was weaker. Prices averaged considerably loner. Selling orders predominated, and some of the prominent local traders were also on tlm selling side. Now York reported a better demand there for De cember w heat. The market opened at about Jc decline, fuitber declined J4C and recovered some, prices advancing Mc fluctuated some and closed about J7c lower than Saturday. The decline was influenced by a desire on the part of longs to realize. Cables were not any too firm, though not particularly lower. This, together with big receipts and largo increase in thp visible, helped to turn the market on its downward course. Corn There was a fair amount of business transacted, most of which was local, as also tho influences on tho market. Tho principal feat ure was the selling early by a prominent oper ator which depressed the market, but later turned bujer and prices reacted some. First trades were at a slight decline, which, after selling off Jic. rallied some, ruled steady and closed with JigJc loss. Cash corn was in fair request. The inquiry was not urgent and prices ruled !JJiC lower with only moderate offerings. Oats wero traded in fairly and a weakPr feel ing prevailed and prices ranged lower, rallied f an lv, but closed at a net decline of KSH0 The depression was due to receipts exceeding the estimates owing to Sunday's inspection on tho Galena and St. Paul roads. Pork A fairlv active trade was reported, but the feeling was somewhat unsettled and prices irregular within a small range. At the opening tho tccllng was rather easy with sales at 12Jc decline. Later, however, the market ruled stronger and prices rallied 10J124c Toward the close trading was limited and prices receded 56'7jcand closed quiet. Lard Only a moderate trade was leportcd and tho feeling was easier in a general way. Prices on the whole range luled easy and de clined 2Soc, and the market closed quiet at the reduction. Short Rib Sides There w as a fair trado and the feeling w as very steady. Prices ruled 2i 5c lower on the whole range, and tho market closed steady at outside figures. Sugar Refineries and Illinois Central the Only Losing Shai es Decline of South American Credit the Cause of Late Drops in Stocks. New York, November a The stock market to-day was divided into two parts,Sugar Refiner" ies and the rest of the listed and unlisted stocks. Jn the first division there was decided weakness, but the other showed a most gratify ing strength on a dull business, and at the closo the losses are few in number, while the great majority of stocks dealt in are fractionally higher, with one or two material advances as the result of the day's operations. The buying of securities still comes prin cipally from parties who are paling for their stocks, and in this manner the floating supplv of securities is diminishing, as indicated by the last; two bank statements. There was some weakness still in Illinois Central, but out side of that stock and Sugar Refineries the market showed a strong undertone, and more resistance to the bearish attacks is developed from day to day. Mr. Gould's bullish utter ances were instrumental in imparting consider able strength to Union Pacific. The market to-day was almost all Sugar, at any rato, and the feeling this morning was that a receiver was probable, and weakness ap peared with the first sales, the stock dropping from 65 Saturday, Jo 62 in the first half hour. Great feverishuess was shown, however, and nearly a full recovery occurred when the news that the decision had been handed down, and that the appointment of at least two receivers was deemed necessary, sent the stock oil in the early portion of the afternoon to 5S- Its recuperative power was less after that time, and while it reached 62 during tho alternoon, it gradually settlid back to 60, and finally closed at wyz a net loss of 4 per cent for the day. The general market refused to sympathize with this heavy drop in Sugar, and notwith standing some selling in London by the early trading, steady advanced from opening to close, although the progress made was ex tremely slow and the final gains small. Louis ville and Nashville, St. Paul and Reading were most active, but neither showed any feature of iuterest, and the only stocks in which there were marked gains were Southern Pacific, which is upl percent, and Jersey Central, which rose 2 on light transactions toward the close. The market closed fairly active and firm at about the best figures. Railroad bonds were very dull, although the sales were distributed among an unusually large number of issues. The marked move ments were very scarce, aud with sales ot $781, 000 no special feature was shown. Government bonds have been dull and steady. State bonds have been dull and featureless. The J03t says: Of all the various causes wuicu oumoineu to Dring about the great and continued decline in American railroad securi ties in the last five months, the most potent was the embarrassed situation of finances In London in consequence of the great losses sus tained thero from the collapse of creditin South America and the decline in all the South American Government and railroad securities. It was these losses which obliged London to sell the railroad securmesof rhoiiniti.ii statm There was no other great market In the world where anything that London had to sell could be sold. This brought us a constant stream of stocks from London during September and the greater part of October, and made tho lowest prices lor two years. Everything now indi cates that the crisis in London has been passed; that the liquidation of embarrassed houses has been completed, and that London being com paratively bare of American stocks, can here after have but little influence on this market, except as a buyer. The immediate movements of the stock market will now depend more upon the money market than anything else, and on this point the bank statement of Satur day indicated that money has really begun to concentrate InNew York'from the interior, aud that consequently a reasonably easy money market may be lookedforduringthe remainder of this year.
