HE People's party has the honor of being first in the field with a presidential candidate in the campaign of 1908, and the Read of irs ticket Is Thomas E. Wat. son of Georgia. The candidate for vice president is Samuel W. Willlams of Indiana. Mr. Watson was nominated for vice president by the People’s par | ty in 1806 and for the presidency in 1004. He is politician, journalist, au- thor, lecturer and lawyer, He start ed out as a poor boy and in spite of the many obstacles in his path succeeded in obtaining an education, in building up a good law practice and in accumu. lating an independence. He has also made a success in literature and has produced several historical works of importance. He has served in the Geor- that has been asked about the Massa- gia legislature and been a member of | congress, and it was Watson who in| troduced the resolution censuring Con- gressman Cobb of Alabama for Intox!. | cation because he had in a rambling | speech used the now historic phrase | “Where am I at?" Thomas was the fifth of eleven children, and the care of the family devolved on him to a considera ble extent after he was old enough to | work, so that his schooling was limit: ed. His father kad been experimenting with a formula for the manufacture of | axle grense. Thomas and three of his | brothers took up the subject and, be | tween them raising a capital of $500, went into the business of making this | product. While care was taken to protect the frames In the bitterest weather, the plants suffered slight freezing several times, apparently without injury, Water was given sparingly, and the | frames were well ventilated on all {days when the sun shone brightly and | the thermometer not below freezing.
