Continued buoyancy of the petroleum group sup plied a strong bnekbene te the closing stock market today. Whl'e the oils were the outstanding features and scored I substantial advances en reports of fur , titer price advances in the refined prod ucts, the low-priced rails, some of the j coppers and meters also came In for considerable attention. The harden ing tendency of the general list, hew- tfis-As X1Im,As..1 at. hAjm I a a a4 A ta A. sas bsj ii-.ul, luiiii.'aii'u luruii'i rt'iiiiuiviik u me snort lntcrcFi, wnicn resuitcu in an extension of yesterday's general rally. The familiar evening up of the professional traders In the later part of the session produced some irregu larity, but the tone of the market re mained strong up te the closing. The bend market did net share te any material extent In the further nativity and strength of the stock market. Lib erty Issues were steady, as were also most of the foreign group, but do mestic rails nnd utilities recorded mixed changes. Strength was shown by Ches apeake and Ohie convertible 4ls. Erie general -Is, St. Leuis and San Fran Fran ciseo income On, Heading -Is, Third Ave nue adjustment 5s and Hudsen and Manhattan Income and refunding Cs. Among the weaker Issues were Chicago and Alten 3ljs, which fell '2', New Yerk, Westchester nnd Uosten -HAs off 2'ii, Consolidated Ons 7s down 1 point and Southern Pacific and Cuban Re public 41-s which reacted fractionally. There Is little need te leek further than te the conditions within the mar ket itself te find satlsfacery explana tion for the week's reactionary turn. Over n week age, a top-heavy condition was evident and it was only a question of time when inevitable collapse of the speculative bubble would occur. Fer nearly four months there has been an almost uninterrupted marking up of speculative values, without any setback te speak of, which would, superficially at least, suggest many of the legiti mate bullish Influences had. te a con siderable extent, been neutralized by the advance in price, extending any where from ten te thirty points. Fer a considerable time the se-called public stubbornly refused te take the alluring bait of the dally demonstra tions of the peels and ether specula tive combination, but finally, as It al ways does, it net only took the bait, but the line, sinker and the rest of the rigging. It is only reasonable te as sume with twenty consecutive days of ever a million shares, representing ap proximately a turnover of 25,000,000 shares of stock, there surely was a wholesale distribution. In this process there was what the street was pleased te call a tranfer of holdings from strong te weaker hands. Accordingly, the superstructure of the market posi tion was materially weakened, making the speculative underpinnings danger ously unreliable in event of some un expected news. Whether the week's shakedown fully corrected this element of weakness in the constructive side of the market re mains te be seen, ns the market for the moment has become virtually a psychological problem and Its immedi ate future depends largely upon the at titude of its former sponsors. It has, en the ether hand, an uncertain cle ment of strength In the possible over ever zealous demonstrations and skirmishes of the professional element. Whatever the ultimate result, the market, never theless, is In much stronger technical position than has prevailed since the ! transactions passed the two-million share mark. Price movement was Irregular in the dull brief session of the local market. Rather free profit-taking In both P. It. T. and Lehigh Navigation was about the only development of interest. These realising sales caused P. R. T. te re cede te 32?4, while Lehigh Navigation lest ever n point in a reaction te 73. Pennsylvania Railroad also reflected continued realizing of sneculative ac counts, yielding te 41, although It regained the less before the closing. A stronger side of the market was found In American Gas nnd American Sterps, which advanced 1 points, nnd a fractional rise in the Philadelphia Electric issues, elevating the preferred within n shadow of the year's top price. Cramps was also up a point. These changes were each made en a small turnover, indicating the narrowness of the market. The behavior of the local market within the past fortnight has plainly revealed the need of some new stimulus te put fresh life Inte, the local trading. It Is somewhat problematical from what source this new invigorating tonic la te be derived. It is the far distant rather than the immediate future developments which premise te give the desired elixir, ns the possible favorable premises in sight apparently were te n large extent discounted by the recent remarkable en hancement of the market value of many of these issues. By reason of the violent contagious nature of the speculative enthusiasm, which appears te have spread like wild fire throughout the length nnd breadth of the land, suggesting the possibility of a secondary period of inflation, undue inrimcrencc nas been paid te practically nil events ether than these interpreted favorably for market consideration. Most of these, it Is true, contain no direct bcnrlnit unen the welfare of .most of the local concerns, but are quite HKciy te exert tar-rcacmng inuuence in iiiu Duai'tug vi muiitcb Berninii-iii, wiiii.il, after all, is the propelling force of all wkie. movements. A curious side of the current sltuu tlen is, while the talk of amalgamations anu consolidations supplied the pre liminary movement of the forward swing, and it was predicted 1022 would be marked in the annals et the market world ns the year of mergers, up te date net a single one of the pre dicted combinations has become a reali zation. The sudden change for the bet ter in both the Industrial nnd general business situation has eliminated much of the problems which net many months age made these proposed consolidations seemingly compulsory. It is, of course, easy te bargain during hard times, but a different preposition when things be gin te leek, prosperous again. Philadelphia Stocks Net High Lest Clese chge.
