—A married lady, who was in the habit of spending most of her time-in the society of her neighbors, happened one day to be suddenly taken ill, and sent her husband in great haste for a physician. The husband ran a short distance, but soon returned, anxiously exclaiming: “My dear, where shall I find you when I return ?” “ Molly,” said Joe Kelly’s ghost to his wife, " I'm in purgatory at this present,” says he. “And what sort of a place is it? says she. “Faix,” sayß “’tis a sort of half-way house between you and heaven ; and I stand it mighty aisy after laving you.” A student who was declaiming vigorously, and, as he doubtless believed, eloquently, on the “ indispensable con tributions of the inferior members of tiie animal kingdom to our noble language, knd ” But here his tutor stopped him, and requested an explanation of the “ indispensable contributions.” '■ Whereupon the student at once replied, “ They may be found, sir, in such words as cfor/-matisnj, ecd-echism, cro- nology, due-tile, /icn-pecked, 02-ygen, cow-slips, piy-meut, ass-teroid, and rcd-iflcation.” Fish Story When the ship Milton, of New Bed ford, commanded by CaptainTialsey, of Bridgehampton, was cruising in the Northeast gulf for whales, they discov ered a large one, which, in spouting, produced a whistling sound from one of the air-holes, similar to that made by a steam whistle. Chase was given, and two harpoons and a bomb-lance through his liver ended his career. When the order was given to cut oil'his head, the man who engaged in this duty placed his feet in the spout-holes, and in doing so one of them was cut. Upon examination it was found that the monster had a harpoon blade in his head, running trasversely through the spout-hole, so as to produce the whist ling sound which had drawn attention to him upon his discovery. The . name of Central America was on the blade. It was ascertained that this vessel’s last voyage took, place some fourteen years previous to the capture, so that the blade had in all probability been imbedded in the animal’s head during this period at least. To confirm this opinion, the shaft was found to he eaten oil' by rust, nothing but the blade being left. The whale afforded his captors one hundred and eighty barrels of oil. (jiiu 2.3-3tw gHOCKING ACCIDENTS. MANY KILLED AND A LARGE NUMBER WOUNDED. Over two hnr-’rod accidents from kicking and running away of horses occurred during the past year, in Lancaster county alone— nearly all of which resulted in injuring the drivers, killlngsmne, maiming and wounding others, and in most cases, breaking costly car riages and hurting the hors s. Of the above, nine-tenths were tame family horses. The Safety Bridle will put an end to all such needless accidents, and with the Safely Lines the speed of every horse is easily much increas d. At a special meeting of the Saddlers of Lan caster county, Pa., held in Lancaster city, Nov. 'l7, 1865, the following resolutions were uoaui miously adop ed : Whereas, The usefulness, power and safety of;DrJHartman’s Safety Bridle and Lines have been publicly demonstrated in the presence of from one thousand teflf een hundred persons to their entire satisfaction ; and since it was proven at the Mi lersvtlle horse exhibition on four of the most vicious and confirmed kickers and runaways, that with the Safety Bridle and Lines it is utterly impossible for a horse either to kick or run away; .therefore Resolved, That we. the Saddlers of Lancaster county, Pa., believe that the Safety Bridle and T.iues accomplish all, and even more, t an is olaiined by the patentee, in preventing horses from kicking and runnlugaway. Resolved, That in view of the above facts, we deem itour legitimate duty, both indlvidu Ily and collectively, to exert all honorable means to rtt once introduce the Bridle and Lines, be cause in doing so we in a very great measure prevent all accidents whli horse, while with the old and detective bridle we put in great Jeopardy both liie, and limb. Resolved, That hereatter w-* manufacture no other but Safety Bridles, uuie s especially or dered. The price of Individual Rights is $5 each ; County Rights, from Sluo.UUlo ssoo.oo,according to population—tin se containing urge cilie excepted. No other investment before the public pre sents such inducenif nts of making money. Iu ever county there are at 1 ost twenty town ships, and In each township t least one hun dred persons wlio drive horses—which a five dollars for an individual right will amount to $.500 per township, and ten thousand del ars ($10,000) for each county at the rate of twenty townships at five hundred dollars each ! I,have not the least doubt but that, amount of money can be made out ot a county with proper busi ness energy. The price of counties is so small as to piaee the investment in the hands of every one, for few are so poor as to be unable to raise one hundred do lars. Another feature about this invention is that the proprietor of territory need not manufac tur the bridles and lines, as the ordinary bridle can be easily alt red Into a Safety. The lines only require to be made to order, aud these can be made by any saddler for a trifle more than the ordinary lines. Heuce, unlike other patents, the right to use it only is sold. No man need wish for a greater Lriunethan right of a State. To show the confidence the paten ee has 1q his invention, he offers to pay one thousand dollars for any horse that can either kick or run away when under the Influence of the Safety Brid e and Lines, For County and State rights address for circular, and for Individual Rights, enclose $5 to S. Glan ders is very contagious and its wide spread prevalence at present is owing no doubt to the l.rge number of army horses, Hillicted with the complaint, that have recently been sold to private parties and conveyed everywhere. It is almost impossible lor a horse infected with Glanders to remain long in a stable with other horses without Jrreparaole mischief. No slan dered horse should he ern, loved on anv farm, or be permitted to work on any road, or evt n to pasture in any field. Great as is the danger to well horses from coming in contact with a glandered horse, it is even worse for the man who attends such an animal. In Spooner’s Yonatton the Horse we find the following: '* The contagious character of glanders is very well known, and not only is it so with regard to the horse, but it is capable of being commu nicated to the human be.ng; and, iDdeed, there have been many deaths from this cause, and most horrible deaths they are. It is generally by means of some cut or abt nslon which comes in conta. t witn the glandered matter, that the. infection is communicated. The utmost cau tion should, therefore, be exercised by the at tendants; and it is almost unpardonable to keep glandered horses any lenglh of time for the sake of their work. - ’ The cases are now becoming far too numerous in which the groom attending to glandered horses becomes infected, and too often dies. It was only a few days ago we heard of such a case in this city. It was that of Mr. Patrick Kelly, residing on the corner of Sbippen and Chestnutstreets. He wasdoctoringn glandered horse.and the animal threw backuls head and cast a portion of the mucus in Mr. Kelly’s eye In a day or two the eye became inflamed and although the best medical talent waseinploye>i, Mr. Kelly became rapidly worse. A heavy fever with the headache set in, his nose dis charged mucus and in feet be was afllicted with every symptom of glanders. At this stage of the disease some of Mr. Kelly’s friends in duced him to try Mishler’s Bitters, and strange to say, with the best result. The fever and headache were soon allayed, the discharge from the nose ceased and the inflammation In the eye disappeared. We mention this case so that if any of our readers may unfortu ately become afflicted with this loathsome disease they may Know where to find a remedy. Mr. Kelly will confirm all that we h vesald. We understand that Mr. Kelly’s is the third case of glander’s in this city that has been cured by the use of Mishler’s Bitters, Uan 26 ltdA3tw §esl BA N K E R S LANCASTER, PA, REFERENCES SILVER. Although not disposed to favor or recom mend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects, I yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to the b neflts he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the tiope that he mav thus contribute to the benefit of others. I do this the more readily In regard to Hoof land’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against them for many years, under the im pression that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture. I am indebted to my friend. Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this preju dice by proper tests and for encouragement i o try. them when suffering from great and long continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters at the beginning ol the .present year, was followed by evident relief anti restor ation to a degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and had almost despaired of regalntng. I therefore thank God and my friencTdirecting me to the use of them. J. NEWTON BROWN, Philadelphia. From the Rev. Thos. Winter. D. D., Pastor of Roxboropgh Baptist Church. Dear Sir *jkl feel it due to your excellent prep aration, German Bitters, to add my testimony to the deserved reputation it has obtained. 1 have for years, at times, been troubled with great disorder in my head and nervous system. I was advised by a friend to try a bottle of your German Bitters. I did so and have experienced great and unexpected relief; my health nas been very materially benefltteu. I conflden ly recommend the arti cle where I meet with cases similar to my own. and have been assured by many of their good effects. Respectfully yours, T. WINTER, Roxborough, Pa, From Rev. J. S. Herman, of the German Re formed Church, Kutztown, Berks County. Pa.
