MA'R’RTAr'K’t? Mr. Guthrie waa received at Louisville, on his return DLAxiIVJ-iliJibO. from Washington, with a public receptton, and the best citizens, without distinction of party, turned out to wel come him. Some of tho citizens of Memphis, Ten., have subscribed $30,000 towards the erection of a new, Theatre in that city. Pork operators have made imdependent fortunos the past season, as appears from the annexed extract, from the Louisville (Ky.) Courier: “While all of our pork operators here havo dene well this season, some of them have realized very heavy profits. "We learn that one house has cleared no less than $300,000; another shows $200,000 on the rhrht side of the balance sheet; while the profits of yet/another amount to $150,000, and several others loom up to $50,000 and $lOO,OOO. Nothing has been heard of 6m 1 office seekers who went to Washington at tile time of tho Inauguration, bat their friends—those that they left behind—expect them home— • in a “few days.” But the prevailing opiuion is maintained by all, that the “ins” will have to go “out”—and they judge so from the fact that Mr. Buchanan is in favor of the “one term” principle. The Democratic party here, as well sa elsewhere, are strongly in favor of “rotation in office,’ and it is expected that uew and other men will succeed those now holding the offices iu this City and Stato. This is as it should be, and none but those now “in” will enter a complaint against the principle of “rotation in office." Lulher M. Kennett and Thos. Price have returned from Washington both somewhat affected with the “prevailing disease” contracted at the Washington National Hotel.— Senator Green is now in the city. As time rolls on considerable anxiety is manifested as to who will be the fortunate individuals Id getting under the wing of Uncle Sum I It is to bo hoped that those deserving that shelter will succeed. A “wild woman” has recently been seen In the woods, in Marengo county, Ala. She was discovered b f a party of hunters, and is represented as a medium siz d woman, fair, and quite naked, with the exception of a pair of moc casins. She runs with great velocity, leaping on all fours over every impediment like an antelope. When discovered by a party of huntsmen, she was concealed among sonic brash, and ran hastily away on their approach, This is, we behove, the first instance of a wild person being seen in Alabama, and with the exception of a wild man said to have been'seen somewhere in the Southern part of Arkan* gas, Is the only instance we remember to have heard of. An editor, who was one of the hunting party who also saw her, says she,was accompanied # by a large ram of re markable whiteness, by whoße wool she held on when running up hills and springing over rocks. The ram ap peared very much attached to the wild and singular crea ture and seemed like her defender t# warn her of danger and protect her. It appears that 6ome fifteen years ago, a little girl,- daughter of a French woman residing on the .hanks of Tombigbee river was lost, as well as a pet lambof hers. They were never after heard from, so that many . supposed the little girl and her lamb had been drowned.— The question now is, can this wild woman of Marengo c 0.,. be tbo same. It is highly probable, bnthow she has exist ed during fifteen years in the woods, away from all inter course with the world, is a mystery. Yours, OLD GUARD. PORTER, Clerk Quarter Sessions' Court LATER FROM CALIFORNIA, Arrival of the Stearaslilp Illinois, Forty-Two Years’ Courtship —We find in the New York News the following marriage At Wilmington, on the 29th of Feb., Aahael L. Beers, of Albany, N. Y-; and Ann Bider. Their united ages are J. 24 years, and the courtship commenced forty-two years since.” A forty-two years’ courtship ! Why during that time we have concluded one war with England, and have almost had two more ; have invented railroads and steam printing presses; had a war with Mexico ; invented the electric telegraph; brought out spirit-rapping and discovered the north-west passage; annexed Texas, and brought to'light the gold of Cali fornia; have extended our national area 200,- 000 or 300,000 square miles, and arrived at such a point of civilization as to appoint special corruption and investigating commit tees in Congress. What great results have been attained, all about us, during the forty two years it has taken the modest Mr. Beers to “ pop the question !” Capital Punishment in Rhode Island.— The Legislature of Rhode Island has refused to repeal the act abolishing capital punish ment, which has been in operation seven years in that State. The House, by a vote of 38 to 20, resolved that “ every person who shall commie murder, shall be imprisoned for life and by a vote of 48 to 10, refused to deolare that murder committed by a convict in the State prison shall be punished with death.
