Eitpard 8. Martin, in February Scribner. s THE ROMANCE OF WAIF. Left en a Trenten Doer-Stop, Although Uclr te a Fortune of 9100,000. The discovery of a 15-months-old baby en the deer-step of a Mrs. Hommell, Ne. 82 Merris avenue, Trenten, N. J., early Thursday morning has led te develop ments bordering en Hie romantic. The little one, it seems, was born In that city, at the residence of Mrs, Docter M. L. Deveesey. Its mother is Mary Heffman, a pretty young woman whose parents are reputed te be very wealthy ana who live either In Rochester or Amsterdam, N. Y. When she gave birth te the child she refused te care for It, and a colored woman naraed Susan Brown took It In charge, and In a short time afterward it was adopted by Mrs. Hummell at the solicitation of its mother. A lawyer drew up an agreement between them. New It appears that the child Is heir te 9100,000, which since has been settled en it by the mother's father. Mrs. Hummell doubted the legality of the adoption papers and took the child te Dr. Devessey's house te inqulre about them. The doctor was net at home. Mrs. Hummell then cencluded te have nothing further te de with the waif, and she left it with the doctor's daughter. Early Thurs day morning the child was returned te Mr. Hummell, who refused te receive it, and a neighbor kept it all night. Then the eversoer of the peer was asked te take charge of the waif, and he also refused. Finally Mrs. Hummell took It back, and the child is ence mero under her charge. The waifs mother Is new In New Yerk. Mrs. Devessey rofuses te be interviewed en the matter. A Ilaunted IIouse. This body of our ha been likened te n tene ment.
