A Participant, New Down with tha Grip Graphically Describe It. On Main street, in Hartferd Urea a plas terer by trade, aged 04 year, Jeseph Howe. He ha never been sick a day in hi life until this week, when la grippe took held of him. Mr. Howe is an ordinary looking man, except that hi face is covered with cars. A genuine interest attaches te the man.' however, when it becomes known that he Is a survivor of the famous "000," whose action at Balaklava Tennyson haa Immortalteed In " The Chanre of the Lttrht Brigade." In that charge Mr. Howe rc- AAlvnH ilia arxim vLhfli tia tvlll nviir writ li him te his grave. Mr. Howe came te this country twenty five years age, and has been living in Hartferd about twenty years, but has never been made an American citizen. Sixteen years age, in Londen, this old veteran was one of forty-five, all survivors of the famous charge, who sat down te a banquet te- ?;etber. He was eighteen years in tbe Iritlsh army, aud fought in tee Kaffir war of 1818. He get a pension from the British government, nut gets nothing new, because he does net live en British soil. When uuestiened about the charge, the old man's lace lights up and he talks freely of it. " I remember right well," he says, "that foggy morning when the light cavalry under Lord Cardigan rested en Sugar Leaf hill. Presently Capt. Nelan rides up, the British colors dying from his sword. He comes from Lord Lucan's headquarters, and a hurried conference ensues between himself and Cardigan. The result of It is seen in a moment, for Lord Cardigan turns te bis men, orders them te mount and fol fel low him, Haying as be does se, ' Here gees the last of the Carlgans.' In his brigade were the Twelfth Dragoons, the Seventh and Eighth Hussars, the Sixteenth and" Seventeenth Lancer, and one or two ether companies composing the Light Brigade. There were 040 men in all. On the hills abevftthe cannon yawned, awaiting a fee worthy of their shot and shell. Lord Car digan led the way, and the men followed grimly behind him. We went down the Sugar Leaf Hill slowly till we get within range of the Russian guns. Tliey poured a volley into us. We could net soe them through the smoke and fog. Capt. Nelan fell among the first, his .head tern from his shoulders. Faster we went, and a second and yet a thltd volley rent our ranks. We closed silently ur. and befere the fourth velley we were en the guns, and the sword and sabre, the lance aud pistol began their work. It was ever In an hour, and the guns were ours. We went out 640, and returned with ISO. Lord Cardigan nidn't get a scratch. I have often wondered why Lord Cardigan led his men into this charge. It is a disputed question. He asserted that Capt. Nelan brought him a dispatch ordering the capture of bat teries 8, 10 and 12. 'Impossible,' said Cardigan te Nelan. ' With brave soldiers,' rejeined Nelan, 'nothing is impossible.' Lord Lucau denies ever having sent such an order, and Capt. Nelan's lips, which could have settled the matter, were sealed by death." Waked Up Effectually.
