Trem the PhlladelphU Press. J. W. Klesler, late coramander'i clerk. United Statea navy, new a resident of Honesdale, Pa., tells the following tery of a remarkable - experience of an American sailor uh a whale. He eaya: Ooergo Leenard, an acting master in the United States navy (lur ing the civil war, anil stationed en beard the gunboat Kntahdln, West Gnlf block ading squadron, in 1803, told story of heroism and exhibited marks en his body that corroborated hli words. The year 1680 found Leenard as one of the crew of the ship Enterprise, a whaler in the -North Pacific. One day he was stationed in the bow of a whale beat a long distance from the ship with a brave crew, vv he had sighted a whale and made for the monster with nil possible dispatch. When within proper distance Leenard threw his harpoon, striking the fish bard and deep. In some manner the line, as It was was running out, caught the body of one of the men In such a way ns te threw him overboard. The man sw denly sank, whereupon Leenard trans ferred his line te a bentmnte and sprang into the ocean in aid of the drowning sailor. The w hale, new maddened by his fast flowing bleed, made a rush for the beat. Remarkable and horrible te relate, Leon Leen ard's frlend had managed te regain the beat, wlille he hlmscll was caught by the whale between his jaws, his jiosltien being inbide the monster's mouth, with nothing protruding but one of his arms. In tills manner the man was in reality within the Jans of death itself. TUe whale instantly plunged down into the deep, and, In the words of Leenard himself, "the fish seemed te be going down, down Inte eternity itself." The Imprisoned man, after all this, had notlest his prosence of mind. He mustered his entire bodily strength and he was a powerful man actually bracing himself in such poditien as te compel the fish te spread his jaw ; at the same time, with his arm that was frce, he grabbed the sheath knlfe out of its socket, slashing right and left. Sfe boener was there a sutllclcnt opening made than Leenard forced his body outside. Up te the surface he swam, n lien, most straugu te say, he leund himself within an arm's length of his beat. He was saved. The marks of the v hale's v, lelcnce and the dents of his teeth were plainly visible en Leenard's arms, and he v as alvv ays pointed out by his brother naval officers as "The Secend Jenah."
