A Lancaster man ki a prohibition community might use it with thrilling and realistic effect. A man en the ocean without anything te drink night also indulge in this tear-moving wail. A Lancaster man at home, just at the present time, must think It, or some thing much mere violent, every time he leeks at the water supplied te him by the city fathers. It Is true that they are building a splendid new water works with pressed brick walls and a dignified chimney, se we try te be patient and te get along with as little water as possible, but the fatheia are begged te consider that without geed water temperance will hardly Increase. At present the temperate cltiren who does net happen te own a filter, and cannot afford te depend en ginger ale nndBedawater.is compelled te take a little wet mud te slake his thirst, and he tries te be thankful for it. Frem a sanitary point of view mud as a beverage can hardly be recommended. It is true that In some Western cities the people thrive en it, but thepeopleout there appear te thrive en anything, and possibly they drink up their real estate just te show her.' geed and plenty it is in the boundless West. If matters keep en In their present ceurse, we will seen be compelled te put by our ice coolers and water pitchers and serve the mud In sau cers as Ice cream is served, cooled, flav ored and colored in a cheap and attrac tive way. Defero we are driven te that extremity, it is quite likely that the city fathers may considerately purchase min eral water by the car lead, for the benefit et the thirsty people ; meanwhile It is pitiful te see the whole town tottering te the verge of Inebriety in a vain effort te live without water. Depcw as a Candidate. Cliauncey Depewsays, according te one of his friends, that he would accept a nomination for the presidency, and asks in an Innocent way "who would net V" Mr. Depew has net heard of the refusal of Geerge W. Cbllds and General Sheri dan te listen te the tempter, and has no faith evidently jn the capacity et the human will te resist the taking et a geed thing when It can be get. On this theory we can hardly believe that Mr. Illalne 'will persist in his presidential declination. As It is only Mr. Ulaine's declination which brings Mr. Depew into the Held of candidates, it seems te be in order for Mr. Depew te explain just what he had In hut mind when he asked "who would net?" slnce his remark se evidently sug gests that he thinks Mr. Maine is net out of the field, and that therefore De- pew is net in. Mr. Depew has pro nounced very strongly for IMalne, and his present expression et a willingness te accept the nomination If he gets it, may be supposed te be simply a presentation of himself as n Blalne vote-holder, te re main In the Held until the vete can be concentrated en lilaine. That Mr. Depew seriously will be a candidate Is in conceivable, in view of his position ns president of the New Yerk Central rail rail read. He knows very well that he Is a presidential impossibility. It is very pleasant no doubt te be talked et sv3 it candidate for the first office in the nation, but both his personal aud his party in terest steer him out et an actual mce for the place that a railroad piesidency bars him from. There is no use in the Omaha Btt getting excited ever his candidacy, which is by proxy for Ulaine. Clergymen sod Ulrerce. Five clergymen of the Episcopal church nave been Bitting in judgmen' ever u brother clergyman who get n divorce, from a wife he chaxged with adultery, upon the mere agreeable greui'd of do de do sertlen; and who married again. This was seemingly a very innocent proceed ing ; but it seems net te have been se considered by his brother clergymen. Apparently an Episcopal clergman is held in ether bends than theso of the law upon the subject of marriage and di vorce. This should hardly be. We sug gest that clergymen have about as much as they can conveniently attend te, te keep themselves in the front rank of moral and law-abiding citizens, aud that they need net be scratching nreund te find any supeiilueus teats of their good ness. The offense in this case appears te be that the clergyman married utter having been divorced for ether assigned grounds than adultery. And one or two of the judges actually intimate that he was geUty et bigamy in se doing ; nnd one et them proposes te sentence him te be removed from the ministry while he lives with his present wife; which under the law it is his duty te de, and which he may be punished by it for net doing. And this judge, who is a highly respected clergyman at Coatesville, is milder in his judgment than two of his associates who want te put the guilty man out head ever heels. Verily, when preachers come te judgment, we are apt te have strange deliverances. Reiuarkuble Contrast. There Is a remarkable contrast shown In the action of the Tammany Hall peo ple in New Yerk in th's campaign as compared with that of four years age. There was never, perhaps, In the history of county affalis a plainer case of hope less minority than is exhibited by the Inaction of the commissioners in lliii proposed new Jail. The court Is unani mous for it; a half dozen grand juries in succession have recommended It ; the press is a unit in its favor; and '.he people, irrespective of parly, all believe the tlme te be ripe for the enterprise.
