& I SUE LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE!, TUESDAY. MABCII 27, 1888. M - ICE BOUND. By Y. CLARK KTJSSEIA, Auther of "Tha ll'rrcfc of the Groirtner," "J.irfc'5 Courtship," '0f UnfcA ife- few," ' The Lady ITciuil " 7;c (CUHTIaUlD.) ciuprnn viil THE FROZEN BCtlOON'CR. I found myself en the summit of a kind of table lanjj vast bodies of lce, every block weighing hundreds and jicrlinra thousands of tens, lay scattered ever It, yet for the apace of a mlle or se the character was that of llatnwa. Southward the range went upward te a coastal front of soine huudred feet, with a htiddle of peaks and strange configurations behind searing te an deratien from the sea line of two or thrce hundred feet. North ward the range sloped gradually, with such a shelving of its hinder part that I could catch n glimjiss of a little space of the hlue sea that way. IYem this I perceived that whatever thickness and surface of ice lay southward, In the north It Mas attenuated te the thape of a wedge, se that Its oxtrerno breadth where it projected its cape or extremity would net exceed n musket shot. Being en the top of the range new, I could plainly hear the noises of the splitting and internal convulsions of this vast formation. The sounds nre net dcscribable. It was lm lm lm pessible te fix the direction of these sounds the island Mas full of them, and always sul lenly booming upon the brccze was the veice of the ocean swell bursting in foam ngalnst the ice coast that confronted it. Yeu may talk of the selitude of Selkirk; but surely the spirit of loneliness in him could net rival the unuttcrable emotion of solitariness that filled my mind as I sent my gaze ever these miles of frozen, stirless white ness. IIe had the sight of fair pastures, of trees making a twinkling twilight en the sward, of grasjy savannas and pleasant slopes of hills; the air was illuminated by the glorious plumnge of flying birds; the bleat of goatbreko the stillness in the val leys; thcre was n golden rogale for lib oye, and his etlicr censes wcre gratified with the perfumes of rich flowers and engaging con certs nmongthe trembling leaves. Abeve all, thcre was the seething warmth of a de licious climate. Hut out upon theso heaped and spreading plains of snow nothing stirred, if it wcre net ence tliat I was startled by a loud report, and spied a rock about half n mlle away fellde down the odge of the flat cllfl and tumble into the sea. I turned my eyesseaward. There wcre n few heavy clouds in the northeast, se steainlike that metheught they borrowed their complexion front the snow en the island's cape thcre. I was pretty Eure, however, that there was wind behind them, for if the roll of the ocean did net signify heavy weather near te, then what clse it be tokened I could net imagine I cannot express te you hew the very soul within me shrank from putting te sea in the little beat. Yet I could net but consider that It would be equally shocking te me te be locked up in this slowly crumbling body of ice nay, tenfold mero Ehecking and that, if I had te choeso between the beat and this hideous rolitude and sure starvation, I would cheerfully accept fifty times ever again the perils of a navigation in my tiny ark. This reflection comforted me somewhat, nndwhile I thus mused I remained standing with my eyes upon the little group of fanci ful fanes and spires of ice en the edge of the abrupt hollow. VhiIe looking nt thi3 my eye traced, a little distanee beyond, the form of ft ship's f.para and 1 igging. Through the labyrinth of the lee outlines I clearly inmloeuttwo masts, with t e .square yards en the foremast, the rigging perfect se far as it went; for.the figuration allowed no mero than halt the height of the masts, the lower parts being ipiarently hidden behind the edge of the hollow. The fabric appeared nslf formed of frosted glass. The masts had a geed rake, and with a seaman's oye I took notiee of the furni ture, observing the shrouds, stays, backstays and braces te Ijo perfect. Kay, as though the spirit artist of this fragile, glittering pageant had resolved te emit no detail te complete the illusion, there steed a vnne at the mast head, bliiiilng like a tougue of ice against the soft blue of the sky. Come, thought I, re covering from my wonder, there is morelu this than it Is xssible for me te guess by staring from n distanee; se, btrlklng my pole Inte the snow, I made carefully toward the edge of the hollow. The gradual unfolding of the picture pre- pare.1 my mind for w hat I could net soe till the brink was icached; then, lueking down, I lichcld n schooner rigged veseel lying in n sort of cradle of ice, stern en te the sea. A man bulked out with frozen snow, se as te matehis shape as greatas a licur, leaned upon the rail with n slight upward inclination of 1'ishead, as though liowereintlionctoi loos ing fully up te liail me. His pesture was ciii mero life like than that of the man un der the rock, but his gurmeutef snow robbed him of that reality of vitality which hnd startled me in the ether, and the instant I saw him I knew him te be dead. IIe was the only figure visible. The whole Iwdy of the vessel w as frosted by the mew into the glassy as-jK-ct of the spars and rigging, and the sun sun vliine striking down made a beautiful pris matic picture of the silent ship. Bhe was a very old craft. The snow had melded itself iqien her, and enlarged with out spoiling her form. I found her age In the structure of her bows, the head beards of which cuned very low round te the top Of the stem, forming a kind of well there, the after pait of which was framed by the forecastle bulkhead, after the fashion of ship building in vegue in the reign of Anne uud the first two Geerges. Her topmasts vgre standing, but her jlbboemwas rigged in. I could ilnd no ether cvidence of her people having snugged her for these winter quarters, in which sjie bad been manifestly lying for years and years. It was very evident that the schooner had in yeai's geno by get embayed in this ice v. hen it was far te the southward, and had in course of time been built up in it by float ing masses. Ter hew old the ice about the poles may be, w he can tell) In theso sunless world the frozen continents may well pos sess the antiquity of the land. And who shall name the monarch w he filled the throue of Dritain when this vast field broke away from the main and started en its stealthy navigation sunward 1 CHAPTER IX. I LOSE MY BOAT. I lingered, I dare say, nbove twenty min utes contemplating this singular crystal fos sil of a ship, and considering whether I should go down te her and ransack her for whatever might unswer my turn. Hut she looked se dai kly secret under her w hite garb, and there was something se terrihle In the aspect of the motionless, snow clad sentinel ulie leaued upon the rail, that my heart failed me, and concluding te have nothing te de with the ghostly sparkling fabric, 1 fell again te my dew nward march and looked toward my beat , that is te say, I looked tow ard the part of the ice where the little havin In which the jay had been, and I found both beat and liaveu gonel I rubbed my cyc3 nud stared again. Tush, thought I, I am deceived by the ice. I glanced nt the slepe behind te keep me te my bearings, nud ence mero sought the haven; but the rock that had formed it was gene, the blue swell rolled brimming past the line of shore there, and my cye fellow ing the swing of a fold I saw the beat about thrce cables' length distant out upon the water, sw imining steadily away into the south, and shening nnd disapjiearing wltn tue lieave. I uttciedacry of anguUh, I clasped my hands and lifted them te Ued, and looked up te hira. I was for kicking eir my Ijoets and plunging into the water but, mad as I was, I was net se mad as that ; and mad I should have been te attempt It, for I could uet swim twenty strokes; and had I been the stoutest swimmer that ever breasted the bait spray, tbe cold must speedily ut an end te my mis ery. The horror that thli whlte and frightful scene of desolation had at tbe beginning filled rr.e with, was renewed w ith such vielence when I saw that my beat was lest, and I was te boa prisoner en the death haunted waste, that I full down in a sort of snoen, like ene partly stunned; nnd had any person ceme along and teen me he would have thought me as dead as the body en the hill, or the cerpse that kept its dtstaal lookout from tag fje&en'JSSeltWflav lii-tirUa ity senses presently returning, 1 get up, nnd the rock upon which I steed being level, 1 fell te pacing It, with my hands locked be hind me, my head sunk, lest in thought By this time the beat was out of sight I looked and looked, but she was gene. Then came my geed angel te my help, and put Gome courage Inte me, "After all," thought I, "what de I dread 1 Death 1 It can but ceme te that It is net long age that Capt llesy cried te me: 'A man can die but ence. IIe'll net jierlsh tha quicker for contemplating his end with a stout heart' IIe that se speke is dead. The worst U ever for htra. Wcre he a babe resting upon his mother's breast ha could net sleep mero soundly, be mero teu derly lulled, nor be freer from such anguish at new afflicts me, who clings te llfe as If this this," I cried, looking around me, "wcre a paredise of warmth and beauty. I must be a man, ask Cled for ceurage te meet whatever may bctide, and stoutly endure what cannot be evaded." My mind went te the schooner, yet I felt en extraordinary recall within me when I thought of seeking an asylum in her. I bad the flgure of her befere my fancy, viewed the form of the man en her deck, nnd the idea of penetrating her dark interior, and seeking shelter in a faerie that time nnd frost ami death had wrought into a black mystery, was dreadful te me. It must be dene, nevertheless, thought I; I shall certainly perish from exposure If 1 linger here; besides, hew de I knew but that I may discover seme means of escaping from that ship! Assuredly thcre was plenty of material in her for the building of a beat, if I could meet with tools. Or, possibly, I might find a beat under hatches, for it was common for vessels of her class and in her time te stew their pinnaces in the held, and when the necessity for using them nrose te heist them out and tow them astern. These reflections eomewhat heartened me, and I turned my back upon the clamorous ocean and started te uscend the slepe ence mere. I helped myself along with the nor, and presently arrived nt the brink of the slepe, in whose hollow lay the ship as in a cup. The wind made a noisy howling in her rigging; but the tackling w as frozen se iron hard that net nrope stirred, nnd the vane, at the mast bead was as motionless as any of the adjacent steeples dr pillars of ice. My heart was dis maj'ed again by the flgure of a man. He was mero dreadful than the ether because of the slze te which the frozen snow upon his head, trunk and limbs had swelled him; and the half rise of his face was particularly start ling, ns if he were in the very net of running his gaze softly upward. That he should have died in that easy leaning pesture was strange; however, I suppesed, and no doubt rightly, thnt he had been seized with n sudden faint ncss and had leaned upon the rail and se ex pired. The cold would quickly make him rigid and likew ise prcserve him, nnd thus he might have been leaning, contemplating the ice of the cllirs, for years and yearsl A wild and dreadful thing for ene in my condition te light en, and be forced te think of I My heart, a3 1 have said, sank in me ngaln nt the sight of him, and fear, and. awe, and suiicrstitieu se worked upon my spirits that I steed irresolute, and would have geno back had thcre been any place te return te. I plucked up after a little, nnd, gripping tha ear, I started en the descent The depth was net great, nor the declivity sharp; but the surface was formed of blocks of ice, like the collections of big stones you sometimes encounter en the sides of moun tain near the base; and I had again and again te fetch a compass se as te gain n smaller block down which te drop, till I was clese te the vessel, nnd here the snow had piled and frozen into a smooth face. The ship lay with a list or inclination te larboard. I had ceme down te her en her starboard side. She had small channels with long plates; but her list en my slde heve them semen hat high, beyond my reach, and I perceived that te get alieard I must seek an cntrnnce en the larboard hand. This was net hard te arrive at; indeed, I had but te walk round her under her bows. She was se coated with hard snow I could soe nothing of her timber.1!, and w ns thcref ero unable te guess nt the condition of the hull. She had something of the leek of the barco-lengos of half u cen tury age that is, half a century nge from the date of my nil venture; but that w hich, in sober truth, a man would have taken her te be was a esscl formed of snow, simrred and rigged with glasslike, frosted lee the nrtlstie capricoef the genius or spirit of this w hlte and melancholy sccne, who, te cemplete the mocking illusion, had fashioned the flgure of man te stand en deck with n human face toughened into an idle, eternal contempla tion. I climbed without difficulty Inte the fore chains, the suew being se hard that my feet nnd hands made net the least Impression en it, nnd aoiuenbat warily feeling the govern ment of a peculiar ane, mounting into a sort of terror, indeed steed aw hile peering ever the rail of the buluaiks; then entered the ship. 1 ran my eyes swiftly here nnd there, for indeed I did net knew wliat might steal or leap into view. Let it be remembered that I was a sailor, with the superstitious feelings of my celling in me, nnd though I de net knew that I actually believcd in ghosts and apparitions and specters, yet I felt as if I did particularly upon the deck of this silent ship, rendered spirit like by the grnve Of ice in w hich she lay, and by the long years (as I could net doubt) during which she had thus rested. Hence, when I slipped eit the bulwark en te the deck and viewed the ghastly, white, lonely scene, I felt for the moment as if this strange discovery of mine was net te be exhausted of Its wonders nnd terrera by the mcre cxistence of the ship In ether words, that I must expect something of the supernatural te enter into this icy sepul sepul cher, and be prepared for sights mere mar velous and terrifying than frozen corpses. Presently, getting the belter of my pertur bation, I walked aft, nnd stepping en te the peep deck, roll te an examination or tlie com panion or covering of the after hatch, which, as I have elsaw here said, wa3 covered with snow.
