The rear et tbe train en the Lancaster track ran Inte the ether, causing ck, which waa one of the worst seen in tbe vicinity for some time. Three of tbe cars en the train of engine S7D were leaded with coal oil and they took lire from the Jumps in the catmeee of the ether train. In a few minutes the oil ears and four ethers en the same train, leaded with dour and feed, were In a blsze. The engineer of 570 had great presence of mind, and when he saw that a big fire was inevitable be quickly ran the train up the cut-eti some distance be yond tbe reach of tbe buildings or bridge There the fire burned furiously all night, and thecals with their contents were completely destroyed. Tbe caboose and one car of engine 198, was also burned while lying near the station. The lire made a great light and burned se brightly that an alarm was struck In this city. Tbe department quickly responded and ran their apparatus te tbe place, but were unable te de anything. If It bad been possible for them te get a stream en tbe fire it la doubtful whether they would have been able te de any geed, as the tire had gained such a great headway. This morn ing there was nothing left of tbe cars but tbe wheel and ether Iren parts, and tbe contents had been swept away. The ties of tbe track were burned at tbe place and tbe tracks for some distance were se badly damaged that they will have te be taken up and replaced. Tbe south track waa blocked until shortly before neon, and trains were obliged te pull around tbe wreck. The commence ment exercises of the Mlltersville Nermal school were formally begun en Sunday In tbe chapel of the Institution. The service was opened at 3 p. m. with an anthem by tbe choir of tbe school, which, under the leadership of Tret. Lauslnger, saug with re re markable spirit and prevision. Then fol lowed a hymn, the scripture lessens for the day and a prayer, alter which Prof. Shaub introduced Kev. J. Max Hark, D. 1., el Lan caster, who preached tbe baccalaureate vr vr luen. Dr. Hark took as his text the clmlng words of Kemaus, 11th chapter and Itib erse: " 1 magnify mine elllce," and based en them a plea for culture as distinguished from mere technical training as the only legitimate work and end of our public school. He said that we are In the midst of a tendency whose tllect Is te degrade every bumau activity lute a mete means of meney-settlnir. Our iemi- lar education has bevu caught in this same sneri-sigmeu uumarian current, uur educa tors above all ethers need te realize the vreng and evil et It They need te see clearly that It lsanarrowinganddegradlugettbeir work te make it only n means of getting a ll lug ter themselves, and Its aim nothing tunre than te drill and train the rising generations Inte skillful arithmeticians, grammarians, penmen, measurers et dry goods and calculators of profits Inte machines for tbe making or money. Education, and especially our common school education, is something hlgber and nobler than this. If net it had better be abolished altogether. It Is ler the true teacher te realize this, and te magnify Ills etltce by lifting It out or the degradingcurrent Inte tbe neble and lefty sphere which el right it Is meant te occupy. Education Is net a crammimr or cut and dried facts into tbe mind or a child as into a Ism, net a mechanical drill for a tewnfthe ordinary occupations of "practical IHe' j but It is a developing of bumau lunctlens and faculties which Ged baa Implanted In the child, which exist there In germ and need only te be unfolded te develop Inte beautiful blossoms of womanhood aud graud fruits of luanhced. Later In life special technical preparation will be in order; but in tbe stage et Hit Willi whleb tbe common aclnsil teacher has te de, tbe work that is needed, that is esHeutial even te the later practical" training, is far mere fundamental and com prehensive. It is nothing short or tbe task et developing little bumau animals into the higher stage of men and women; te awaken te llie and activity the germs et true man hood that lie latent in their breasts; te inspire and form their distinctively human charac ters. They will learn te tle things correctly afterwards, If only first they have been made te be right beings. The preacher then dwelt upon hew the teacher, and hew aleue, he could thus magully bis cilice. He laid most stress upon tbe necessity or first eurself being what you want your pupils tone. The greatest edu. caters In the world, tbe Themas Arnolds, or in our own county the Jebn Becks, teachers whose influence keeps en growing even arter they are dead, were net the meat learned scholars the most scbelastically trained; they could perhaps scarcely have passed the final examination el this Nermal school ; but they were true men, pure, large hearted, whole-seuled, with noble well-rounded, symmetrical characters. It was their fulness of manhood that impressed their personality se wholesomely and lnerad Icably upon every pupil who ever came within reach el their influence. And It Is just this quality, net taught In any normal curriculum, net te tie had anywhere but lu tbe perfect man, tbedivlne Ideal of humanity, it is this "measure or the fulness of tiie stature of a perfect man," this true and com plete manltntset and womanliness, that is tbe great need te-day among our educators, and tbe secret of success as a true teacher. With a few words of direct counsel te the thirty-one graduates Dr. Hark closed his ser mon, which had been listened te witb close attention by tbe large audience. A luung Man's !udi-n leath.
