Jennie, the olght-year-eld daughter of ex ex Underkeeper Daniel S. Stautler, met with a sad death, botween 8 and il o'clock this morning. While playing at the Eden bridge she lest her balance, Tell te the wnter below and was drowned. Her body was reexnered shortly alterwards and Corener llenamsn sent for. Her father keeps the l'den hotel, but she made her home with licr grand mother, Mrs. Susan A. Ilarnlsli, widow of the late I). W. Harnlsli, who resides near the foundry. A short distance abmu the home of Mrs. IMrnMi the Conostega Is spanned by a large wooden bridge, and It was there the drowning took place. Five years age last Christmas easen a geu tlemaultvlng In New England, upon balanc ing his acceudls ler the ynr, found that he had been uuusually prosperous in bis bus! ness enterprises ; and, although he was net yet rlcb, he determined te devote f 1,iW el his pretlts te charity as a sort or thank tier ing. His desire was se toempiey this uume that the benefit te le derived lreui it would net perish with Its first ue. but would con tinue through many years ; and he decided te send peer children from New Yerk te country homes In the West Accordingly, through the excellent agency of the Children's Aid society, which bad beeu engaged In this work many years, seventy-six boys and girls were gathered from the streets and from homes of dire ov ev exty and sent te Iowa, Kau-as and ether points where comfortable homes awaited them, and where industry and hmiefty were sure te meet such rewards as could net have been possible under the terrible condi tions of tbe life from which they had been rescued. riveycars have passed since the children reached their Western homes. The elder ones have grown te be men and women , tbe younger have developed sufficiently for a fair judgment ei their future te Is) formed. It is interesting te view the results as they appear te-day. Eighteen of the children w ere mem bers or lour families who went te places where employment and comparative abund ance were assured them. The imagination can hardly plcture the helesmess of the life they left behind. One twy and one girl went te their vv ldew ed mothers and retwrted their safe arrival. A boy went te live with an uncle, but has sent no word. Filty-tlve leund their homes among stran gers ; from all except ene reports have been received, though from many net of recent date. Of alt this number, gathered as they were from the poorest of the street popula tion of this great city, only two are known te have beeu thieves. Twe have run away and two or three are spoken of as decidedly bad. Nine have wandered off trern the neighbor heed where they were first placed and have been lest sight of, but in doing se they exer clsed only the right that belongs te every American boy, and there Is no ev Idence that they have net done well in the new homes they have found. Nothing but a miracle could have made them de w ell here. Six have returned te New Yerk , one was sick and was sunt back rer treatment, three brothers were sent Ter by a married sister a he had become able te maiutaln them and start them in business here ; and two came back, probably because New Yerk street lite bad still a fascination te thelrchildish minds. Twe have died a premising girl and an in dustrious young man. Fully thirty were re ported at last accounts as doing well some of them very vvelL The elghtt-eu wh s were with their parents it is safe te assume have done fairly well. This is a geed record. Let any tiorsen fa miliar with the darker slde of New Yerk life estlmate if he can tbe proportion et these boys and girls who would have escaped from criminal or vicious lives it they had re mained here. Dr. Meull Hilty is the advocate of this plan. He was engaged in studying the physiological eUects of such a reversal el the normal portion et the body, and leund, among ether results, that the ilrcumference of the neck was in creased nearly two inches by reason, chiefly, of a swelling of the thyroid gland. He fre quently Tell asleep while in this position and occupied In his studies, and found that he always awoke earlier In the morning, felt greatly relreshed, and was capable of much better work during the day than alter a night's rest taken in the usual way. He has new slept with his reel higher than his head ler the past four years, and his experi ence leads him te commend the method most highly. He says in this way the brain re ceives a mere plentiful bleed supply, and Is consequently better nourished, whlie there Is no danger et se much bleed passing te the cerebral structure as te causa congestion. This danger Is obviated by the enlargement of tbe thyroid gland, which holds lMek a er taiu portion et the bleed lu its dilated ves sels, and which also acts as a regulator et the cerebral circulation by exerting pressure u mw the carotids, and thus diminishing tneir calibre. Anethor advantage which Dr. Meull-HUty claims rer his method is that it is prophylactic against pulmenaiy phthisis. The apices or the lungs being deieudent, re re ceivea mero plentiful bleed supply, and are thus rendered stronger ami less liable te be come the point el origin of tubercular dis ease. The w Titer's assertions may Uiu jrrei t, and his motlied may, as he claims, be the only rational one, but It Is likely te be a long tlme before be can induce mankind te regard pillows asa libelees and harmful part el the bed furniture Aiuiuemeiit. ll'iieil A Jlankin't Mtnitrtli -On Friday evening the first show of the season will appear in tulten opera house it will be Vt'lUen 4 ltankln's celehrated minstrel troupe.
