Address an letters and Telegrams te THE INTELLIGENCER, Lancaster, Pa. lK fawcwtcr Intelligencer. A.AH0A8TXU. M.VY 7, IK. Seme Population Thought. Mr. Richmond Maye Smith, professor of political economy and social science in Col umbia college, New Yerk, has been bring ing his rare powers of aualysis te beitr en the population statistics of the country, with Interesting results. He finds that river bottoms almost always show great density of population, becauso.ef tlie rich ness of the soil and commercial ositien. In the maps showing the distribution of population in the early history of tlie couu ceuu try, dense population was every wheie en rivers the Connecticut, the Hudsen, the Delaware, etc. As population moved west ward It followed rivers, like the Meluwk, because they were the natural highways, and when It crossed the Alleghenies it fol lowed the Ohie down te it3 junction with the Mississippi and then up the latter river for Uiesame reason. At the present time the densest population is found in the strip extending along thfe Atlantic coast from Massachusetts te Delaware bay. 'But, tak ing the country as a whole, the densest population is found in a zone stretching across the continent between the parallel 38 deg. and 43 dcg., nearly CO per cent, liv ing in that zone. As le the preference for urban ever rural life, Mr. Smith shows that the proportion of urban te rural population is constantly increasing; that is, the cities are growing at the expense of the country. In Eng land and "Wales, from 1871 te 1SS1, urban population increased 19.0 per cent.; ruml population increased 7.3 per cent. In Prance the urban population in 1W0 was 1M.4 per cent, of the whole, and in 1870 it was 35 per cent, of the whole. Germany perhaps is the best exemplification of a well developed agricultural and city life. In the United States 20 per cent, of the population is in tewn3 of 4,000 inhabitants und ever. Comparing the United States with Ger many, thelatter's city population is dls. tributed among a large number of small towns, while in the United States it is concentrated in a small number of large towns. Fer Instance, Germany has 110 towns of 20,000 inhabitants and ever, with total population 7,300,'J2O. The United States has 100 towns of 20,000 inhabitants and ever, with population of 0,031,202. AVe concur in Mr. Smith's view that this ab normal increase of cities at the expense of rural communities should net be encour aged. Unreliable 'ews. A very geed illustration of the tendency of newspapers te misreport persons and of the readiness of the public te accept as news what is mere gossip, often fabrica tion and frequently malicious misrepresen tation is afforded by the denial from Min isters Lewell and Phelps of the expressions upon the Irish question ascribed te them in wide publications made of the fact. It was stilted that Minister Lewell had said in England that nobody here of the sixty millions American population sympathized with tlie cause of Irish home rule except these of Irish birth or close affiliation ; aud IMinister Thelps was reported te have come uleng and affirmed his predecessor's state ment. Upen the publication both gentlemen were soundly berated in the newspapers sinden the platform. It will he remem bered that at the late large and successful rarnell meeting in the Philadelphia Academy of Music, Mr. Charles Emery Kmith, editor of the Press, and one of Mr. UlaiiiQ's political friends, made these ex pressions the text of his eloquent ppeech, ami elicited thunders of applause by his iel InikoefMr. Lewell and his demand for the recall of Mr. I'lielps, his addiesswas Dxtensjvely published aud his utterances le ffarded as significant. Mr. W. U. Hensel, who belongs te a different party from Mr. Kuiilh, and te the one which is held ie' ie' lipensible for Mr. Phelps appointment, fol fel fol lewed In the same strain and was as em phatic, if net as forcible, in his ciiticism upon Mr. Phelps for his anti-Irish, nntl Americau and anti-diplomatic expulsions. If the new reported denial and dial tlaimer of Mr. Phelps is reliable; and it certainly is as well accredited as the original statement and much Juore credible, the criticism passed upon him was ill-founded aud a gross in justice ; for this the nowspapers that fui liished the basis for it by false news are principally responsible and the speakers who acceptedlt without proper verification areuetEuiltlcss. The ?niftr u i.,t..-i. ant chiefly, of course, for illustration of n prevalent habit.
