Jeawsen as a Naturalist. Many pages of Themas Jeffersen's "Notes en Virginia" are devoted te the discussion of Uuffen's statements, first, that the animals common (e both continents are smaller, in tbe new world; second, that these which are peculiar te the new are en a smaller scale ; third, that these which have been demon strated in both have degeneratedln America, and, leurtb, that en the whele America ex hibits rewer species. He successfully over throws the specious and superficial argu ments of the eloquent French naturalist, who, it must be remembered, was at this time considered tbe highest authority living in sucii matters. "Net content with this" continued Mr. Goede, "when mlnlster plenipotentiary te Europe a few rears later, he forced llnlTen himself te admit bis error. The circumstances shall be related in the words or Daniel Webster, who was very fend or relating this anecdete: "It was a dispute In relation te the moose, and In one or the circles of the beauzsprit a in Paris, Mr. Jeffersen fought rer some characteristics in the formation of the animal which Butten stoutly denied.
