LANCASTElt, JANUA11Y 8, 1KS.V The Geological Itcperts. The governor says that seventy-three volumes of the state geological leporthave been published at an average cejt of $14, 000 per volume or n million dollars alto gether. As but from two thousand te llve thousand copies of each volume arc pub lished the cost of each copy is from three te five dollars, and the work is still going en willi no prospect of its ever leiiig com pleted while the money holds out te pay the geological piper for their pleasant dance. There probably lias never, in the history of science, been a fatter field of clever provided by a beneficent state for the delectation of its learned asses. The fact that this expenditure has new been allowed te flew out for se many years, when Its poverty-stricken results were con stantly thrust under the Legislature's at tentien, is a wonderful testimony te the legislative indisposition te turn off a spigot that has once been opened. The idea of n geological survey of Pennsylvania wad n geed one. It was suggested te the Legislature after the development of Penn sylvania's wonderful store of petroleum, and when theie wasn universal anxiety te knew what and whence it wns. "With this addition te the great mineral wealth of the state, It was felt that it would be well te examine and map out the geological conditions of the state that Its ieeplc might knew just what was In the bowels of their, land. The Idea was a geed one, if well executed by men cempetent for the task. It has proved a bad venture, since It was put Inte the hands of these who seem te have had it ns their chief aim te keep open and warm n a jan-rtrmr thnmsn ves llimucli inn vest nt tt'i' tl.nlh.l.vj Intn n-I.Ul, 4 lint- nnlllil r.lllni- fur m- witu i.i.7 ... .....v... ...v. v,. ...... .. telaxatienand enjoyment fiemthe pros of their private avocations, and draw a geed salary from the state for doing their holi day work. AVesay, what Is the universal opinion, that the work of the geological survey generally lias been inefficiently done. It is supcificial In character and unimportant in result. It has net wnlked In lulvance te point out te the people what their land held, but has been little mere than an imperfect lecerd of the lesults of the investigations of the mining companies and individuals of the state. Xe one can go te the geological rapoitsfer valuable information or even entertaining reading ; save In exceptional cases where an aaibtant te the chief geolo gist has really found out something which was net previously known ; when he pro pre probably took a j ear's vacation and rest te recover from the treincnilem effort. A mere slip-shed, incomplete, unsatisfacteiy multiplication of weids and maps, signi fying nothing, than the state geological reports, has never U-fnre been &p lead nut ever se many pages and above seman) dol lars. If the Legislature can find a geologist who knows something it should contract with him, for a lump sum,te get the wheat out of the chaff of these reports and print it. It must strike theaveragcceuntiy Demo crat that the various organizations of his party in Philadelphia have nothing else te de, or have no inteiest in any thing ether than te bvest some peeple for oflice and te pi etest against the appointment of ethers. Ever since the election the new spaiers have almost daily had accounts of meet ings of big committees and little clubs, and associations, battalions and companies, the proceedings of which mainly related te questions of patronage. The moving cause of most of the.ic dis turbances has been Cel. Decheit's a( a( peintment te ene of the two dozen clerk ships in his elllce. of a Republican, in which he followed in the line of Con trollers Pattlseii, Page and Hirst, his three Democratic predecessors ; and, like them, Cel. Dechert took a representative of that element of the Republicans fiem which he secured the most of the Republi can votes that contributed te his election. The ether twenty-three or twenty-four places in his o.'llee are tilled with Demo crats. What is all this hull.tballoe alxiut ? A great many Democrats de net like it, but they devote their energies te mere important Matter than whining and resolving ever It. If the vaiieus organizations of the p.uty In Philadelphia, which are e busj naming and advocating candidates for nfilee, sug gesting, soliciting and condemning ap pointments and nominations, will quit this unprofitable business for n time, and ' fe te weik for the general party interests, they would give lietter excuse for their ex JstericJ. a m m Fruit and Flowers. The Republican memlers of the new Legislature stait off in a characteristic way. The Republicans derisively sunpped their fin gers at the suggestion, and one of them impudently gae notice that no reform measures would lw suggested from their side this winter. Xone arc expected. Meantinie the Legislature has adjourned until next Wednesday evening; and it is very freely given out that the committees wili lie held back until after the election of a United States senator. The friends of Camerbn are in complete control of the organization, and they prejKjse te um it te reward these who vote ns they desire and te punish these who don't. A blacksmith of my ac quaintance wns severely lnjiucd in the buck by the kick of a horse; four Allcock's Ponees Plastees quickly- lelleved hlui of excruciating agony nnd cured hlni hi n week. Anether patient, suffering with Nctirulgln of the Heart, w ns completely cured In four hours. In Asthma, I knew- of a cuse where they were worn for three, months and fully restored te lualth. In another case where a uitlunt hud Sporadic Cholera, nothing relieved him until he put en thrce Allcock's Pereus Plasters ; In twelve hours all pains In his chest and stomach disappeared, I knew that these Plasters, ap plied en the pit of the stomach, nru u sovereign lemedy for Hyspepsla nnd Constipation. Finally, If persons once ue Allcock's Pobeds Plasters they will never me uny ether they are se pleasant, quick und painless nature's balmy assistant. II. C VAN NOItMA.V, SI.
